Three people died tragically in a shooting at Chicago’s Mercy Hospital Monday afternoon.
Dr. Tamara O’Neal, 38, Officer Samuel Jimenez, 28, and pharmacy resident Dayna Less, 25, were killed by Dr. O’Neal’s former fiancé, who had confronted her outside the hospital, reported the Chicago Tribune and the Chicago Sun-Times.
Dr. O’Neal had been an emergency room doctor at Mercy Hospital for the last two years. She worked helping disadvantaged children and led her church choir.
Mercy Hospital ER director Dr. Patrick Connor described O’Neal as a “wonderful individual.”
Officer Jimenez was responding to the scene when he was shot and later died from his wounds. He was on the Chicago police force for less than two years. Jimenez was married with three children.
Less was a recent graduate of Purdue University and was a first-year pharmacy resident. She was engaged to be married in 2019.
“This tears at the soul of our city,” said Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson lauded the heroism of Jimenez and the other officers who rushed to the scene.
“When they pulled up, they heard the gunshots, and they did what the heroic officers always do — they ran towards that gunfire… Those officers that responded today saved a lot of lives."
