Evan Helmuth, a film and television actor who played a priest in the 2012 horror film “The Devil Inside,” died Monday, July 17, 2017, of complications from a stroke, according to multiple news sources. He was 40.
Helmuth, who played the Rev. David Keane in “The Devil Inside,” also co-starred alongside Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore in 2005’s “Fever Pitch.” He played the comedian’s sidekick. He also played a role in the 2013 Steve Jobs biopic, “Jobs,” that starred Ashton Kutcher in the title role.
Helmuth was a familiar face to television audiences, too. He played roles on “Alias,” “NCIS,” “Bones,” “Rizzoli & Isles,” and “Battle Creek.”
Helmuth trained as an actor at Michigan’s Interlochen Arts Academy and the University of Southern California’s School of Dramatic Arts. At the latter institution, he befriended Josh Appelbaum, who went on to write for and produce television programs. Appelbaum co-wrote the episode of “Alias” that featured Helmuth as a guest star.
“Evan was the warmest, most generous soul imaginable,” Appelbaum told Deadline in an interview Wednesday. “His passion for this industry was only outweighed by his passion for his friends. We met over 20 years ago at USC, where Evan was an instant lightning rod on the stage. He loved his craft, he loved entertaining audiences and he was as good as it gets at both.”
We invite you to share condolences for Evan Helmuth in our Guest Book.
