George Gaynes (1917 - 2016)

George Gaynes, the actor who played Punky Brewster's adoptive father on the eponymous TV show, has died, according to multiple news sources. He was 98.

Gaynes died Monday at his home in North Bend, Washington. No cause of death was disclosed.

Born George Jongejans May 16, 1917, in Helsinki, Finland, Gaynes was raised in the United States. In the 1940s and '50s, he performed on Broadway in musical comedies, including Wonderful Town, a musical adaptation of My Sister Eileen. In the '50s and '60s, he acted on Broadway in The Consul, Out of This World and Of Love Remembered.

His acting credits extended beyond the footlights of Broadway. He appeared in the films PT 109, The Way We Were, Tootsie and several of the Police Academy films.

On TV, he played Henry Warnimot, the foster father on TV's Punky Brewster, which ran from 1984 to 1988. He also had recurring roles on The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd and Hearts Afire.

He is survived by his wife, the actress Allyn Ann McLerie, whom he married in 1953, and their two children.
