John Dineen of Ireland, a financial public relations executive and the fiance of "Downton Abbey" star and Golden Globe-winning actress Michelle Dockery, has died after a long illness.

The 34-year-old Dineen died Sunday at a hospice center in Cork, Ireland. The cause of death was not announced. London's Mirror, as well as People magazine, reported that he is believed to have had a rare type of cancer.

A spokesman told Britain's ITV News that Dockery's "family is very grateful for the support and kindness they have received, but would kindly request that they are left to grieve in private."

Dineen worked for FTI Consulting in London. FTI Consulting is a global firm with clients including top bank holding companies, law firms and Fortune 100 companies, according to the firm's website.

John Waples, a senior managing director with FTI Consulting, said in a statement that Dineen "was an immensely valued colleague and friend and will be sorely missed."

Dockery plays Lady Mary Crawley on the hit television drama. The show's final episode is scheduled for broadcast Christmas Day in Britain.

Dockery's "Downton Abbey" co-star Allen Leech, who is also Irish, introduced the couple.

Dineen died two days before Dockery's 34th birthday.
