John Ridsdel

John Ridsdel, a Canadian held hostage by Islamist militants in the Philippines, "has been killed at the hands of his captors," Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a statement Monday, according to CNN.

Trudeau also said, "This was an act of cold-blooded murder and responsibility rests squarely with the terrorist group who took him hostage, emphasizing that Canada condemns the "brutality" of this "unnecessary death."

Trudeau expressed his "deepest condolences" to the family and friends of Ridsdel.

"It's hard," a friend of Mr Ridsdel, Bob Rae, told CBC News. "It's just very hard. I've been involved behind the scenes for the last six months trying to find a solution and it's been very painful."

Ridsdel and three other people were taken hostage last September. They were taken at the Oceanview Resort on Samal Island.
