John Thierry, former NFL defensive end who was a first round pick for the Chicago Bears in the 1994 NFL draft, has died at the age of 46, according to the Chicago Tribune.
Former Chicago Bears offensive lineman Marcus Spears wrote on Instagram that Thierry suffered a massive heart attack Friday night.
His alma mater Alcorn State University announced his death on Saturday.
The Bears released a statement on his passing.
“The Chicago Bears offer their deepest condolences on the passing of former linebacker John Thierry. Our thoughts and prayers go out to John and his family.”
Former teammate James “Big Cat” Williams spent time with Thierry during the Bears alumni weekend in September.
“That’s the last time I saw him, and he looked good, damn good for his age,” Williams said. “We hung out that weekend. This is a shock. I feel bad for everybody.”
Thierry played five seasons for the Bears, contributing 12 ½ sacks and one interception.
He signed with the Cleveland Browns for the 1999 season and recorded 7 sacks, he then played for the Green Bay Packers and finished his career with the Atlanta Falcons.
