Matt Dike, who co-founded the influential hip-hop label Delicious Vinyl, has died at the age of 55, according to multiple news sources.
Delicious Vinyl’s web site said that Dike died at home on Tuesday in Los Angeles after a brief illness with his brother Lane and sister Vikyana at his side.
Dike became a DJ in New York City and then made his way to Los Angeles. He was a DJ at the Rhythm Lounge in Hollywood when he met fellow DJ Mike Ross. The pair founded Delicious Vinyl in 1987.
The label did not take long to make a splash. They signed rapper Tone-Loc and the pair co-produced his hit song “Wild Thing.” The follow-up track from Tone-Loc “Funky Cold Medina,” was also a hit. The rapper’s debut LP, “Loc-ed After Dark,” became the first album from a black hip-hop artist to top the album chart.
Dike and Ross then co-produced Young MC’s top ten hit song “Bust a Move.” Other acts on the label included Def Jef, Mellow Man Ace, and the funk/soul band The Brand New Heavies.
Dike played a major role in the production of the Beastie Boys’ “Paul’s Boutique” album. The Beastie Boys had commercial success with their album “Licensed to Ill” but wanted to expand their sound.
The Dust Brothers produced and recorded the album at Matt Dike’s living room in Los Angeles. Dike provided some of the dense samples for the album. Though “Paul’s Boutique” was not a commercial success, it is considered to be a groundbreaking rap album and is known as the “Sgt.Pepper of hip-hop.”
Dike left the label to Ross in 1992 but he continued to be a producer and mixer on some Delicious Vinyl acts such as Pharcyde.
Many paid tribute to Dike on social media.
Questlove from the Roots:
“So upset I never got to meet up/chat w #MattDike. Proprietor of @deliciousvinyl records. Creator of some of the most timeless fratty party hip hop ever (“Wild Thing” “Funky Cold Medina””Bust A Move”). Signing some stellar artists that were out of the norm at the time: #BrandNewHeavies#MellowManAce #ThePharcyde) but man, imo his crowning achievement was as one of the producers for one of THE greatest timeless hip hop albums ever #PaulsBoutique.”
Siriux XM DJ Jim Shearer:
“Matt Dike, co-founder of Delicious Vinyl & the catalyst for the creation of the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Boutique" has passed away. He put the pieces in place for much music goodness for years to come...”
We invite you to share condolences for Matt Dike in his Guest Book.
