Well, it was something like that for Alfred Sturgeon, according to the obituary that ran in the Akron Beacon Journal.

During military combat, he survived an ambush in which he suffered multiple injuries. Through the years, he shared his remarkable testimonial of how his life was spared when a shell fragment lodged into a bible which he was carrying in his shirt pocket.
