Art Shay: Photos of My Wife

A picture is worth a thousand words, and the images photojournalist Art Shay captured of his late wife, Florence, tell the story of a lifetime filled with love.

From their first meeting at a summer camp in New York to the final weeks of her life, Florence remained Shay's favorite subject. Throughout their 67-year marriage, she kept appearing in his photos, sometimes as the focus and sometimes hiding in plain sight in the background.

They raised a family together, traveled, built careers and a life together, and through it all Shay recorded their lives with his Leica camera, amassing an enormous body of work.

He returned to those photos recently to create a new show to honor Florence, who died of cancer in 2012, and their life together. The show, "My Florence," opens Jan. 27, 2014, at the Columbia College library, 624 S. Michigan Ave., Chicago.
