On the morning of Dec. 8, 2014, a small plane crashed into a home in Gaithersburg, Maryland and burst into flames.
In the house were Marie Gemmell and her two sons, Cole and Devin. All three died in the fire. Investigators told ABC News that Marie's last act appears to have been an attempt to use her body to shield her boys from the intense heat.
Now that the smoke has cleared and the fires are out, her husband, Ken Gemmell, is left to pick up the pieces and carry on without his wife and two of his three children.
When the plane crashed into their home, Ken was at work and daughter Arabelle, 5, was at school. Their lives were spared, but forever changed by this tragedy. On his Facebook page, Ken wrote:
"No words can describe the enormity of our loss and sadness over yesterday's tragedy. We lost Marie, the love of my life and college sweetheart, and our two young, innocent and joyful sons – a loss that no person should ever endure."
He went on to request privacy while he and his daughter grieve and try to find "some degree of normalcy." As Ken and Arabelle begin the painful process of rebuilding their lives, a family friend has started a GoFundMe campaign to help raise funds to rebuild their home. The campaign has raised over $434,000 so far.
