The story of 81-year-old skier Robert Blake and his loyal canine companion.

On May 2, 2014, retired veterinarian Robert Blake and his golden retriever Buddy went cross-country skiing in the mountains of San Miguel County, Colorado. When they failed to return home, a search and rescue operation was launched to locate the missing 81-year-old and his dog.

The following day, searchers located Blake's body. He had died of an apparent heart attack, according to KRQE in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

And Buddy?

He was still by his master's side, guarding Blake's body against coyotes and other scavengers and predators.

The loyal dog was rescued and returned to Blake's wife, Marlene, who called Buddy a hero for his loyalty to her husband.
