Tosh.0 Production Assistant Mistakenly Killed by Los Angeles County Sherrif's Deputies

On Monday, April 7, West Hollywood resident John Winkler, 30, rushed to the aid of neighbors who were being held hostage in their home by a man with a knife. Winkler and another man were wounded, but escaped the apartment, only to be shot by Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies, who mistook Winkler for the attacker. Winkler was struck once and collapsed. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he later died.

Sheriff's deputies subsequently investigated the scene and arrested Alexander McDonald, 27, inside the apartment. He was found with a large knife, fighting with one of the hostages. He has been charged with murder in the death of John Winkler.

Winkler moved to Hollywood from Oregon to pursue a career in film and TV production, and was employed as a production assistant for the show Tosh.0 at the time of his death. He had been living in Los Angeles for the last six months.
