In 1939 CARMEN MIRANDA (1909 - 1955) was a local star in her native Brazil when she was offered a contract by Broadway producer Lee Shubert. The following year she made her first Hollywood film – "Down Argentine Way" with Don Ameche and Betty Grable – and was voted the third most popular star of 1940.
