Tragedy struck Washington state on March 22, 2014, when a landslide in the Cascade Mountains engulfed the small towns of Oso and Darrington, north of Seattle.
Without warning, a massive wall of mud and earth swept down the mountainside, destroying homes and burying dozens of people. Search and rescue crews worked to find as many survivors as possible and to recover the bodies of those who died. More than 100 first responders from Snohomish County and surrounding counties were dispatched to assist with emergency medical and search-and-rescue efforts. In total over 600 personnel, including more than 160 volunteers, worked on landslide recovery operations.
In the end, 43 people were killed and dozens of homes and buildings destroyed, a terrible toll on these small communities.
