One hundred years ago today, Clara Barton died on Apr. 12, 1912, leaving behind an enormous legacy. This "Battlefield Angel" worked on the front lines of the Civil War to tend injured soldiers and maintain Army hospitals. She went on to found the American Red Cross, now one of the largest humanitarian organizations in the U.S.
We salute this altruistic giant today with a special photo gallery featuring pictures of Barton, images from her life, vintage Red Cross memorabilia, and more.
