As we mark the 85th birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., it is difficult to overstate how important he was to the struggle for civil rights in America. His words and deeds inspired millions to join the civil rights movement, and spread the idea of nonviolent resistance as a means of fighting injustice. His tragic assassination in 1968 halted his work, but not his dream.
In honor of MLK on his birthday, we look back at some of the people who picked up the mantle and kept marching forward to the promised land of his dreams, and some who made his work possible.
