Hey there Big Man in The Middle! I can't believe that it has been 15 years since you left us! You were a heck of a swimmer and a tremendously gifted and skilled volleyball player. You were an ageless wonder and an amazing person. Continue to rest in eternal peace. Jammers Love Big Mike.

I was Rusty's roomate for one semester at State. He was a fun-loving guy and a great athlete. I lost contact since college, but I'd never forget this guy. My sympathies to his family. I know he'll be missed.

Before Rusty and Jackie bought their house, they lived on the second floor of a house on Peace Street. I lived in the other apartment on that floor, and would often come over to watch TV with them, unless my cat allergies were acting up. It was rare that I would be the only one there, as the volleyball community knew they could always drop by to hang out.
I recently saw a Fiat 2000 Spider, and it reminded me that both Rusty and Jackie drove these classic convertibles, although Jackie's was in much better shape.
I am so sad to hear of Rusty's passing, and hope that all of Jackie's friends in Raleigh are taking care of her.

To Jackie and the other members of Rusty's family: I just learned of his passing. Rusty and I had many classes together during our 4 years at Central High School. He was a great classmate--always cheerful, happy to see a friend, and willing to help anyone who needed a favor. All of his high school classmates were lucky to have had the opportunity to spend 4 years with him during our "formative years". I am sure that he told you about his time growing up in Phila. and the experiences he had with the members of the "229". When we hold our 40th reunion in 2010, I will be sure to mention his name to the rest of our classmates and to offer a toast in honor of a great guy who left us too soon.

I was shocked to hear about Rusty's passing. We went to high school together in Philadelphia where we were both on the swimming team. Rusty, was a year ahead of me, but always full of advice and encouragement. He was considered the best swimmer in Philadelphia during that era, amd modest about it. He was a great example of the scholar-athlete.

My sincere sympathy goes out to you, Jackie, and your family in this most difficult time. When we moved to Raleigh in 1987, you and Rusty were ruling the sand courts at Jaycee Park and it was awesome to be a part of it. Rusty always was a great competitor with an easy smile and fun loving personality. It was such a great time to play with so many awesome people. Moving to Vermont and then back caused us to put volleyball on the back burner but in the early 2000’s, I played on an indoor team in Cary and to my surprise, Greg Dinse and Rusty were on the top team. Rusty was still killing it from the middle and it brought back many memories. Rusty, I bet you are on God’s volleyball team wooping it up now. We will miss you Rusty. My prayers go out to you all

I am so sorry to hear of Rusty's death.I swam with him for 3 years at NC State where we were members of several All-American relay teams together. He was a very talented and easy going person all the time that I knew him. I was surprised to see that he was only 3 weeks older than I was, he must have skipped a grade, because he started at State the year before I did. I was not surprised to hear he was a great volleyball player, because he was a very gifted athlete. God Blessed us with his presence.

Jackie, you have Mary Beth and I's deepest sympathies. I only just heard of Rusty's passing a couple of days ago, takes things a while to get down here to the coast.
I haven't seen you guys in many years, but still cherish the friendship we had so many years ago. As a good friend of David McM. back in their college days, Rusty became a fixture in college life, large and in charge. As I started playing volleyball back then as well, Rusty became an icon, and then you as well as I moved into the beach game. Many Saturdays, as my partner "Doc" and myself, and often MB and whoever was her partner, would leave the real beach to drive up to Raleigh Beach.....the only place we could get real beach ball, I remember watching Rusty play, occasionally getting to play against him (pain). Way back when, in much younger days........great times.
Though MB and I haven't seen you guys in years, the memories remain. We will miss him. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish you peace.

I met Rusty when I was a young, green volleyball "kid" in Greensboro. Rusty was already a volleyball god at that point. Yet, despite my own lack of skill and experience, I was immediatley accepted as part of the North Carolina Volleyball Family, one which was all inclusive and welcome to all who pursued the sport.
While I will always remember his skills at "the game," what I will treasure even more are the fond memories of his love of life. The good, the bad, the ugly -- it didn't matter. Rusty embraced every moment and brightened every day I saw him.
I didn't know Rusty well; the times we spent together were far too short, and more often than not, on opposite sides of the net. But even as competitors, there was always a laugh; always a kind word of encouragement; and always a "high five" on a well-played ball.
Jackie, I wish you well. We will all miss Rusty, you most of all, but we will never forget him.

Boy, some of the names here really take me back to the old days!
I remember Rusty’s competitiveness although I couldn’t come close to it myself. I remember his athleticism, although I REALLY couldn’t come close to that either. But regardless of one’s ability, his friendliness and humor on and off the court were things I know we all appreciated.
He was and will always be one of the good guys.
Jackie, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

To the Family and Friends of Rusty:
When we lose someone we love that person goes to a better place where they are at peace - Eternally resting with God.
But family and friends are left behind....To somehow find the strength to carry on. Remember, love and friendship live forever inside our hearts and memories.
Rusty was a teammate of my brother Ed (Foulke) and I at Vesper Boat Club for many years.
My prayers and my sympathies are with all of you at this difficult time.

Being on the opposite side of the net from Rusty was nearly always a humbling experience. So many balls were hammered so hard. The beauty of his game was that these crushes were interspersed with cobras-many untouchable.
Special thoughts to you Jackie. Many good memories.

Dear Jackie,
I am so very sorry and saddened to learn of the loss of Rusty. While gardening for Ann and Hanz, it was always a pleasure to chat with him whether he was scraping the house or enroute to or from somewhere. I'll always remember his little red car and his love of the Carolina Hurricanes! My thoughts are with you. Please if there is anything you need, do not hesitate to let me know. I am so close to your neighborhood.
May the memories you hold in your heart bring healing and peace to your soul.

I wish to offer my sincere sympathy to Jackie and the rest of Rusty's family and friends. I will really miss him. We played volleyball together for about 25 years! In fact, we played on the same team for the last 20 years. When I started playing, Rusty was perhaps the best known and most talented player in the Raleigh area (and beyond). I felt very fortunate to have him on our team, for many reasons. He always gave 100%. As competitive as he was, Rusty was very good about offering to sit out to give others more playing time. I am glad to have been his teammate for so many years and I will really miss him. The local volleyball world will never be the same.

Hello again to Jackie, all members of the original "Stupeed Family,"and all those who played with or against Rusty, who of course automatically become honorary members of said family! I write again to simply say what a wonderful, bitter and sweet day today was as we gathered for Rusty's Memorial Service, shared our thoughts and memories (and a few tears too), celebrated his life, met at "The" house, and then had some go out to dinner, too. I'm just back from all that, and I know there will be some tough days ahead when that house is way, way too quiet. In those times, you call me, Jo or any of the other members of our big crazy v-ball family! We will always be there for you, Jackie - always.
Lastly, I want to ask that any of the old volleyball crowd who see this entry and have not already contacted me to e-mail me at: [email protected]; one lesson I know Rusty wants us to learn from his life and passing is how precious life is, how important friends and sharng is, and so I want to stay in touch with as many of your guys as possible, share stories and pictures, and then collect those for Jackie (and for my own reflection, enjoyment, tears and closure).
Jackie, I love you; we all love you - and God is Especially fond of YOU!

Some great memories of Rusty already posted here, that bring back so my memories of my own. Rusty was part of many people's lives in the Carolina Region. I played against him and with him for many years, both indoor and out. He was on our old Triad team that went to many nationals together as well as all over the East Coast. Every year at Nationals we were in the pool with the defending Champs from the year before and Rusty was always pumped to play against those national team guys. He never backed down. I'm sure he's still fighting the good fight. I didn't see as much of him lately, but I'll miss him.

Dear Jackie and Family,
I just heard about your loss this afternoon and my heart breaks for you. Ironically, I had just mentioned Rusty's name to the other coach/ parent at our BOYS volleyball practice! They knew you from way back when and shared the sad news.
I am sure by now, he has organized the "volleyball gods" to more efficiently assist us as we seek their devine intervention.
Our prayers are with you and your family. May God bless you with grace and strength as you go through this trying time.

Jackie and Friends,
WOW! I was in Raleigh about a year ago and took a drive to "Raleigh" Beach and saw a few folks playing Volley ball in the cool NC sand. I drove by the Center to see if Jackie was around and had thoughts of Rusty and Jackie both playing sand VB and recollected the constant support for the game both gave. I remember how passionate Rusty was when he stepped on the court. (that's one word for it) I loved his excitement and energy for all sports.
I played both with and against an incredible athelete but referred "with." I haven't seen you guys in many years but won't ever forget either of you. "Rest in Peace my friend" I'll keep you in my prayers Jackie.

My deepest sympathy goes out to Rusty's wife Jackie, and the rest of his family. I joined the volleyball world in 1996, and Rusty was one of my first friends. He welcomed me into the club and encouraged me by his style of coaching. We'd talked between matches about our glory days as swimmers, and about our teams that we supported; the NC State Wolfpack & the Carolina Hurricanes. His friendly smile and positive attitude will be greatly missed by all. Rest in peace my friend.

Rusty, Jackie, Friends, & Family,
Rusty lived a very large life here on earth. As we all know, he stacked countless personal accomplishments in leadership, swimming, volleyball, and historic site preservation in his life. However; the main thing I remember Rusty for was his contribution and mentoring to my life and other’s lives. Rusty had a way of bringing joy, laughter, and happiness to everyone around him; even those that met him for a brief moment in life.
I went to NC State with Rusty, and played volleyball for NC State and many other teams with him. We went to our first US Nationals Volleyball Tournament together. We were roommates and traveled all over the East Coast, playing ball, surfing, and general having a great time. Rusty was like a big brother to me. I grew so much in my life because of him. I remember when he met Jackie and then the family of friends became even larger as she and Rusty began to build their life together. I remember those late nights after volleyball games when we would all go over to Jackie’s apartment for parties, but only after grabbing a few dozen doughnuts at Krispy Kreme. Sometimes we would invite some of the visiting teams up for a game of “Spoons”.
The first time I took Rusty on a surfing trip (he had never been surfing before that), I went out in viscous storm waves of 10-15 feet on my board and here came Rusty swimming alongside and body surfing, ½ mile offshore, in water that no one else would even consider entering! He was just good at anything he tried.
During our last college years, Rusty and I played volleyball doubles together and continued to play sand doubles for many years thereafter. We played many tournaments together and won nearly all of them; in fact, we never lost a doubles match in North Carolina when playing together. Our success was lead by Rusty’s spirit!
Rusty was the glue that held the gang together as we road tripped around the East Coast to Bowl games, volleyball tournaments, surfing trips, and more! There were mud bowl volleyball tournaments, “The Raleigh Hard” volleyball tournament (outdoor doubles on the eve of Christmas Eve), and many other outrageous events. The “Stupeed Brother” were on a roll, even inventing finger dance called “The Wang”. Rusty was our heart and soul and I have missed him every day since I moved away from North Carolina. I didn’t talk to him much over the last few years, but; Rusty, you have, and will always in my heart.
Rusty, you were the greatest competitor! You were and are an even greater spiritual source of energy for those of us fortunate enough to have been near you. You filled our lives with love and joy! You are my best friend ever and I will miss you forever more.
My deepest sympathies and love go to you Jackie, family, and friends.
Rusty, you are my Brother and I Love you!

Jackie,
No doubt heaven is a rowdier place right now, though earth seems a bit quieter with this loss. We just played with Rusty in our coed v-ball league last spring and are so saddened by his passing. I'd like to share a saying by an unknown author that I was given when my parents passed away.
"When someone you love becomes a memory, that memory becomes a treasure"
Rusty was a treasure to many.

I offer heartfelt sympathy to Jackie and to Rusty's family. His kindness and support led Gregg and I to join the board of Raleigh P&R's Inland Beach Volleyball Assn. He was a valued member of Gregg's teams in USAV and city leagues. Between matches, Rusty and I would chat about cats, cars and the general state of things. We will miss him more than words can convey. Gone too soon, but always in our memories.

Dear Jackie,
You and Rusty always went out of your way to make me welcome as a "volleyball widow", and then some. You invited me into your hearts and your home. I remember doubles on the beach when the sand was so hot it burnt our feet. I remember crazy fun road trips. I remember “Hello Neighbor”. I remember saying “I do” in front of you two and dancing for the first time with my husband in your amazing garden in Oakwood.
Rusty, you will live on forever in the memories of your friends.
Jackie, you have forever friends in us.
Much love,
Dorée

Rest in peace, Rusty. One of the fiercest competitors I ever met. And one of my favorite Carolina Region players of all time. Rusty and I shared the same birthday, so we would always wish each other happy birthday when there was a tournament around that time. Super, super guy.

I was deeply sadden to hear of Rusty passing. Rusty and I swam together at Vesper Boat Club while we were in High School. Rusty and I was the first recruits of Coach Don Easterling at North Carolina State University in 1970. During our 4 years at NC State, Rusty help lead the swim team to 4 consecutive ACC Conference swimming championships and we were undefeated in the ACC each year. This was the start of 12 years where NC State won every ACC Conference swim championship. Rusty was a good friend and I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are for him and his family.

Jackie,
You are in my thoughts and prayers as you endure the loss of a great husband, friend and soulmate. If ever two were soulmates, you and Rusty were. I have so many memories of both of you, roaring in to 504 just before midnight on New Year's Eves, Candlelight Tours, cats, Athletic Club parties, Garden Club. Most of all, both of you have been so good to Mother and Daddy. You have another Guardian Angel, although a rather rowdy one, watching over your shoulder. Take care and much love to you.

Dear Jackie - I have sooo many great memories of Rusty that I do not know where to start. One you may not know of is the fact that Rusty coached my younger sister, Betsy, when she swam for the swim team at the Carolina Country Club. Last night, when I told Betsy the news, she shared with me her memories of Rusty always pushing them, having fun - and of one morning when he roared into the CCC parking lot in his car (back in his college days) when his accelerator got stuck and he had to run around the lot several times while he tried to unstick it! :) Anyhow, know this - Rusty was taken early to make some noise in heaven, and while here on earth, he lived life large, and lived it his way. I will never forget those years where he and you provided what became my volleyball "home."
Lots of love and prayers,
Clark (and Jo)
