Elschen Strickler, Cavedo Obituary

Dr. Laura Clayton Cavedo, 48, and her daughters Elschen Aramer Strickler, 12 and Iliana Rose Strickler, 9, of Crozet, Virginia, died Thursday, August 30, 2007.

Laura was born May 16, 1959, in Saudi Arabia, the daughter of Richard T. and Laura Ware Cavedo, and the granddaughter of Aurelia Signora Brent of Brentwood in Nelson County, Virginia.

Laura graduated high school from Chickahominy Academy in 1976 in Henrico County, Virginia. She received her bachelors degree from Florida Atlantic University. She received her doctorate degree in Clinical Psychology from Penn State University. Some of her most deeply held values included the environment, alternative medicine and social justice. These values helped fuel her mission to be the best mother she could be, and the children were a testament to the success of her efforts.

She is survived by her husband, Dale E. Strickler; her father, Richard T. Cavedo; her sister, Kendall C. Maynard; and her nephews, Troy V. Maynard and Prescott R. Maynard.

Elschen, born in Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, lived most of her life at Shannon Farm Community in Nelson County. She loved animals, art, music, and bringing her incredible creativity to life in all she did. She lived and breathed horses. She was a member of the United States Pony Club where she had earned her D-2 rating, and competed in the National Pony Club Quiz Rally in Kentucky during the summer. She was an avid and amazingly fast reader, and especially loved fantasy books. She was a skilled practitioner of Aikido and a passionate gardener. She was to start the 7th grade at the Charlottesville Waldorf School this year.

Iliana, born in Charlottesville, Virginia lived all of her life at Shannon Farm Community in Nelson County. She was complex, big hearted and compassionate. She spent hours inventing a cage that her handicapped parakeet could use, rather than chance its ill fate if she returned it to the pet store. She would climb anyone who was willing to act as a living jungle gym, she loved to have her father hold her upside down so she could "walk" on the ceiling, and she wasn't about to allow even the biggest of horses to intimidate her, despite her small size. She had earned her D-2 rating in the pony Club and looked forward to riding first flight with the Oak Ridge Hunt Club. She was a skilled practitioner of Aikido, and had a passion for drawing and building often quite complex things. She was to start the 4th grade at the Charlottesville Waldorf School this year.

The children are survived by their father, Dale E. Strickler; grandfather, Donald W. Strickler; uncle, Thomas C. Strickler; grandfather, Richard T. Cavedo; aunt, Kendall C. Maynard; uncle, Victor K. Maynard; and cousins, Troy V. Maynard and Prescott R. Maynard.

There will be an outdoor memorial service held under a tent, rain or shine at 1p.m. Saturday, September 8, 2007, at Shannon Farm Community, 469 Shannon Farm Lane, Afton VA 22920. You may call 434-263-4097 for directions.

A celebration of their lives will be held at the home of Richard Cavedo at 1573 Kingsland Road, Richmond, Virginia at 6 p.m. Friday, September 7, 2007.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to either the Charlottesville Waldorf School at 120 Waldorf School Road, Charlottesville, VA, 22901. Web:www.cwaldorf.org, or the Natural Resources Defense Council, at 40 West 20th Street, New York, NY 10011. Web:www.nrdc.org.

Dear Dale,
I am so very sorry. I haven't seen you or the girls since they were very young, but I remember them so well. Elschen was so sweet and caring and Iliana was a little bundle of energy. I can't begin to imagine what you are going through. Our love and prayers are with you always. (You know, I can just see them all up in heaven with your Mom.) Your cousin, Cindy

My daughter Phoebe and I attended the beautiful service today, at Shannon Farm. Phoebe and Iliana were in the third grade together last year. Iliana was a true sprite, and darling little pixie, full of love and laughter, who had the most endearing smile and infectious giggle you can imagine. At night, Phoebe and I close our eyes and try to hear her laughter. We will miss her and her sister and mother, more than our simple words could ever express. But, boy, oh boy do we ever feel blessed to have known them and to have heard the laughter. Our love and heartfelt sympathies go to you all. Lesli and Phoebe DeVito

Dear friends and family of Laura, Elschen and Iliana,
These three wonderful human beings will be greatly missed by our whole community. I am a teacher at the Charlottesville Waldorf School, and had Elschen and Iliana in my handwork classes, and Elschen in my 6th grade art class. Both girls were hardworking students, who listened to directions carefully and worked with such amazing skill and with such beautiful results in everything they did. Little Iliana was always determined to use the darkest, most vibrant colors and crocheted with great speed and accuracy. Elschen quietly made sure she had the help she needed to make a beautiful doll, red haired and dressed in purple silk. Her artwork was truly amazing, and all of us will remember her mosaic horse, which seemed to breath life into glass and stone tiles. Elschen's lovely calligraphy final was a quote from Shakespeare and was of course, about horses.I will always remember Laura around school, helping out with the third grade in any way she could and any where she saw a need. Laura was a quiet presence in our school community, but whenever she smiled her wide, beatific smile, I felt privileged to be with such a dedicated, kind and loving person. They will all be missed by our whole community, and remembered for their love and generosity for a long, long, time.

Dear family of Elschen and Iliana,
Both Elschen and Iliana joined my German language classes when they enrolled in the Charlottesville Waldorf School last year. Their mother was naturally concerned that Elschen especially (who was entering 6th grade) might have problems catching up with her class. Within a few weeks of getting to know both girls I knew that here were two particularly sparkling, lovely children. Iliana shyly, but confidently joined in from the start and shared with me many beautiful drawings. And Elschen, while always gentle and soft-spoken, soon proved to be an exceptional student who had no problems at all fitting in with her new friends. As we start the new school year, Iliana's and Elschen's classmates and all their teachers are thinking of them and wishing they could be with us. They will be missed by the whole Charlottesville Waldorf School community.

We knew the family through the Charlottesville Waldorf School, and that entire community thinks of your family constantly. Our daughter was in Iliana's class and two of our children played soccer with her as well. I recall assisting the coach in one soccer game where she seemed to be bounced around by larger boys for the whole game. She would come to the sidelines injured, rest for a few minutes and be ready to return to action a few minutes later. She was a delightful child, and we miss her terribly. Our kindest thoughts and deepest prayers are with your family.

To the Stricklers and Cavedos:

I did not know Laura and the children, but I am from Penn State and read the notice in our daily paper. This is truly one of the worst tragedies I have ever heard of. It is unthinkable that an entire family could be lost this way. Please accept my very deepest sympathies. Sincerely, Mary Jane Coleman
