Charles Lombaerde Obituary

SANDYSTON - Charles August Lombaerde, 80, of Layton, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008, at Newton Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Lombaerde was born July 20, 1928, in Paterson, the son of the late Charles James and Mary Standard Lombaerde. He was a long time resident of the Layton area.

Mr. Lombaerde and his wife, the former Carol Seidel, were married on July 24, 1954, at Our Lady of Lourdes R.C. Church in Paterson.

Mr. Lombaerde was an active member of St. James the Greater R.C. Church in Montague, and proudly served his country as a sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a lifetime member of the American Motorcycle Association, and also a member of the Roosa-Fleming V.F.W. Post No. 161 in Port Jervis, N.Y.

In the 1950s, Mr. Lombaerde was a CYO advisor at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Paterson. In the 1960s, he was the institutional representative for the Layton Cub Scout Troop. He retired as a telephone technician after 35 years with the N.J. Bell, where he was awarded the Vail Medal. He was also a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers of America, Local No. 827.

A family statement read: Charles loved hunting, fishing, the outdoors, spending time with his grandsons, Anthony and Matthew, and hunting with his son Clark.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Lombaerde is survived by two daughters, Christy Mastrelli and her husband, Frank, of Dingmans Ferry, Pa., and Charlyn Dickens and her husband, Tom, of Lincolnville Center, Maine; two sons, Clark and his wife, Candise, of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, and Charles and his wife, Helen, of Milford, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Anthony and Matthew Mastrelli, Adrienne Lombaerde, and T.C. Dickens.

Friends may call today, 8:30 to 9:45 a.m., at St. James the Greater R.C. Church, 75 River Road, Montague. A 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will follow, with Rev. A. Richard Carton officiating. Burial will be at Hainesville Cemetery.
