Stan was my teacher. With that I'm saying much more than just "Stan taught me creative writing during 2 years of poetry independent study at SFSU in the 80s." His written critiques of my poems were so nuanced, so insightful, so much more than just "how to make a better poem" (more like "how to make a better you"), that I have kept all our correspondence, which he wrote by hand, & still read sections of it occasionally all these years later for the eloquence of his lessons in How to See. I was not surprised at all when I heard he'd become a painter.
Even at 23 or 24 years old I was hyper-aware of his uniqueness among people, among writers, among teachers in my life & of the ways in which he was informing both my writing and my world view. His ability to go straight to the heart of what was being written, regardless of how different a poet's voice was from his own, & how respected I felt because of that. I remember our first meeting; he asked for three poems a week. A tall order! I would go to Sears & stand in the typewriter aisle typing them out on a demo Selectric &, because I refused to submit something with white-out to Stan, kept typing until all the copies were clean.
I was always paralyzed with shyness whenever I was around him & never quite got over that. But it was all an unforgettable experience at an unforgettable time. Everything was possible.

People "touch" your life for a reason.....firstly, for me, it was Anne Rice and her spell-binding fantasy novels....now, also, it is Stan Rice...sad that he has passed...his painting and poetry I'm not sure I understand but I know I want to explore them more thoroughly...

When gods drown and lay in slumber on beds of stone.
Where belief's walls tower againts feilds of faith.
What men may say when they mean't not to do.
Who trys to speak, but words are world apart.
How change is feared for death is a first step.
And why we speak when they are not near.
Because the soul is beyond us, but it is still here.
The loved and the lost are gathered there.
In that place, that spot were we cannot look in to stare.
Not in nirvana or heaven. Not on some other plane.
But those who haved passed are in us now.
And they smile at our memories. So we comfort in ther names.
(A cheeze poem by Jeffrey J. Hames to the Goddess Anne Rice)

Dearest Anne,
This evening as I was chatting online with some friends who are as devoted to your works as I am, I heard of Mr. Rice's passing.
I know Stan was an inspiration to you, and so much more. That he lived and loved you so that you might live and love us, your fans, was the greatest gift we could receive from a man the majority of us will never know.

Anne, I offer this to you in your time of sorrow. These are not my words, but the words of my people when a sorrow like this befalls us.
I give you this one thought to keep
I am with you still--I do not sleep
I am a thousand winds that blow
I am the diamond glints on snow
I am the sunlight on ripened grain
I am the gentle autumn rain
When you awake in the morning's hush
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight
I am the soft stars that shine at night
Do not think of me as gone
I am with you still--in each new dawn.
Much peace and comfort be with you Anne and may the Great Spirit comfort you in your pain.

Stan's haunting, hypnotic, and satirical works of art on page and canvas will remain timeless. His love for his wife and family were not just obvious, but enviable. I met him only once, but his kindness and sensitivity were evident.
To his family, I offer the deepest sympathy in their time of grief.
They say if we are fortunate, we will find true love once in a lifetime. A love that compliments and blends two souls to work harmoniously as one. Never was that philosophy so evident than in the marriage of Stan and Anne Rice.
May God Bless you Anne and Christopher, please know your fans and friends share in your grief and with their love, attempt to provide comfort.
