Abel Fernandez, an actor whose credits include a role as federal agent William “Bill” Youngfellow on the TV series “The Untouchables,” died May 3, according to multiple news sources. He was 85.

The California-born actor co-starred on the series alongside Robert Stack. “The Untouchables” ran from 1959 to 1963.

Abel played roles on dozens of television shows including “Daniel Boone,” “Gunsmoke,” “Wagon Train,” “Have Gun – Will Travel,” and “The Adventures of Rin Tin Tin.”

He was born July 14, 1930, in Los Angeles, the youngest child in a large family. His mother, who died at birth, was a Yaqui Indian, and his father was an Indian from Mexico. After high school, Fernandez enlisted in the U.S. Army when he was 16 years old, and he eventually became a paratrooper. Before he launched his acting career in movies, he spent three years boxing professionally in the light heavyweight division.

His big-screen credits included “Many Rivers To Cross” (1955) starring Robert Taylor, “The Tijuana Story” (1957) starring James Darren, “Pork Chop Hill” (1959) with Gregory Peck, and “Apache Uprising” (1965) starring Rory Calhoun.

He later produced theatrical shows for disadvantaged children.

He is survived by four children, 13 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren.
