Alex Webster Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2012.
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — Alex Webster, the star running back for the New York Giants who later coached the team for four years, died Saturday at a hospital in Florida. He was 80.

Webster played for New York from 1955-64 and was the head coach from 1969-1973. He is fifth on the franchise list with 4,638 yards rushing and also ran for 39 touchdowns.

"Alex was one of the all-time great Giants," team co-owner John Mara said in a release. "He contributed so much to our team as a player, assistant coach and head coach. He was an even better person. We shall miss him dearly."

Webster, from a native of Kearny, N.J., played his entire NFL career with New York. He ran for two touchdowns and had five catches for 76 yards in the Giants' 47-7 victory over the Chicago Bears in the 1956 NFL championship game.

The former North Carolina State star was inducted into the Giants' Ring of Honor on Dec. 4.

"Some of my greatest memories growing up were my father taking me and my brother and sister to Giants games at Yankee Stadium," Giants co-owner Steve Tisch said. "I knew early in life what a great Giant Alex Webster is and was and what he meant to our organization. We are all thankful and proud of Alex's induction into our Ring of Honor this past fall."

Webster led the Giants to a 9-5 record in 1970 in his second season as coach and was 29-40-1 overall. He also played for Montreal in the CFL in 1953-54.

Al was the oldest student in his KHS graduating class of either 1949 or 1950. When he was handed his diploma on the Football field platform he raised both arms (like "Rocky") as if to say: "I finally made it". Everyone in the stadium rose to their feet and gave him a STANDING OVATION.

To the Webster Family: The Giants of the Golden Years in the 50s-early 60s were my heroes. Alex Webster was a tremendous dependable player on one of the great teams of all time. His humility, gratitude, and good natured way of being is a credit to him and his family. Best of the best. Once a Giant always a Giant.

I remember Alex playing football in the Kearny High School games. He was great then, later in college and then with the Giants. God bless him and his family at this sad time.

Big Red and I spent time together in New York City in the late 70's. We had some mutual friends, though I was more than 20 years his junior.Every place we went, Red was mobbed by fans. Meeting after work at Mike Manucci's was a special treat. Everyone stopped by to say hello to Red, who always introduced me as "coach". He was a gentleman and a lot of fun!

Debbie and Jim: You are in my thoughts and prayers. Your Dad and Mom were very good to me the summer of 1972 when I went to training camp. They opened up their home and their hearts to me. We stayed in touch each Christmas after I moved to NH. They both are a part of MY history. God's Blessing to you and your families during this difficult time.

Alex was a classmate and teammate at N.C. State in the early 50's - a great friend and one of the first "big" running backs - went to Canada for his first year in the pros, but later became a legend as a player and coach in the NFL - an infectuous smile, great sense of humor, and good friend to all. What fond memories of college years!

I had the opportunity to spend time with Alex, as he was in the same Independent Living Facility as my Mother, Harbor Place, in Port St. Lucie. My mother used to make him laugh with her many New York stories. He was quite an enjoyable individual who was willing to discuss anything, in addition to football. A friend of mine, who was a collector of sports memorabilia, asked me if it was possible to get a signed photograph. Alex was more than willing to oblige. In fact, he went up to his room, came back down, and signed the photo to my friend. He was a great football player and a classy gentleman. My condolences to his family. We lost a good one.

Alex Webster is Kearny, N.J. I remember as a youngster how he was loved by everyone. He was the greatest football player we ever had.
My memories of my Father loving him and then seeing him walking on Kearny Avenue will always remain in within my heart. He always took time to smile and say Hello and I have been a fan of Alex's all my life!
Rest in Peace, Alex!
The Webster family has had a great loss but the Lord has a wonderful and Great gain.
You are all in my thoughts and prayers.
