Andy Fraser Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 17, 2015.
TEMECULA, California (AP) - Andy Fraser, who co-wrote the rousing rock anthem "All Right Now" when he was the teenage bassist for the British rock band Free, has died in California at age 62.

Fraser had been living in the California desert community of Temecula, where he died Monday, the Riverside County coroner said in a statement. The cause of death is not yet known and remains under investigation.

At age 15, the London-born Fraser briefly became a member of John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers. The group functioned as a training ground for young British rockers including Eric Clapton and Rolling Stones guitarist Mick Taylor.

Within a year, Fraser became a founding member of Free. The band's most prominent member was singer and guitarist Paul Rodgers, who would also go on to front Bad Company and The Firm.

The band's biggest hit by far was 1970's "All Right Now," which remains one of the defining hits of classic rock radio. Fraser als o produced the track and plays a bass solo on it.

The song is also a staple of football stadiums. The Stanford University and University of Southern California marching bands each play it at virtually every game.

Fraser kept playing music for most of his life, but he would never equal the success he had as a teen with Free, which broke up in 1972.

He and Rodgers took the stage together to play "All Right Now" at Woodstock '94, the reboot of the classic music festival.

Andy Fraser was a talented musician who never received his full due. I followed his career since the mid-1970s, when I became hooked on British blues rock, and I still listen to The Shark's "First Water" album. I am glad to learn that Andy was at peace with his life. Rock on!

"Andy, I have no words, I am stunned. The only words I can quote is from your last FREE song called "Goodbye".

Goodbye,

I hope we meet again.
And the good times will always remain.
We've come to the end of our road together, made a stand that's gonna last for ever.
Brother won't you tell me what you gonna do.
Will you take the high road
or will you take the low road.
Will you take the fast train out of town to get back home.
Oh and don't waste your time on hate
it can be used in better ways
Remember the times and better days.
Goodbye, I hope we meet again.

Andy your music always will be in my life. Sail On Andy, to the wonderful Magic Ship. You are Free at Last now to give a "Little Bit Love".Remembered always.

Sad day. One of the best bass players that ever lived passed away on Monday 16 March. Co-writer of All Right Now amongst others he was the youngest of the original members of Free at 15, writing All Right Now when only 17. The best bass studio performance ever was in Mr Big from the same album and only bettered by the live version on Free Live. After the demise of Free he went on to form Sharks, Andy Fraser Band and eventually concentrated on song writing, providing amongst others, Robert Palmer's Every Kind of People and Frankie Miller's Be Good to Yourself.
A great talent and a massive contribution to following generations of rock musicians. RIP Andy. A big part of my journey. Thanks for the notes

Besides being a major influence on this young in the '70's musician, I'll always remember Andy's kindness and sense of humor. He was so much fun to hang with after his Temecula concert in 2006, he was enthusiastic about his new musical ventures -- never living in the past. When I hung out with him in October 2014 he looked strong & healthy and was supremely proud of his two smart & beautiful daughters, Hannah and Jasmine. It was obvious how he spoke about them that they are his pride & joy even though his legacy is his music, passion, honesty and, ultimately, his spirit. Andy was a very unique and wonderful soul... whom we will long miss.
