Andy White Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 11, 2015.
Drummer Andrew "Andy" White, who was known best as the replacement drummer for the Beatles' first single, "Love Me Do," has died, according to the BBC. White, who died Monday, was 85.

According to relatives, he died after a stroke.

White, who was born July 27, 1930, in Glasgow, Scotland, was the featured drummer on the Beatles' U.S. single release of the song, which appeared on the band's British debut album, 1963's "Please Please Me." He also played on the single's B-side, "P.S. I Love You."

White went on to play with many other prominent musicians including Chuck Berry, the British rocker Billy Fury and the Welsh singer Tom Jones. He played on Fury's first album, "The Sound of Fury," which is generally considered Britain's first rock 'n' roll album. He drummed on Jones' hit song "It's Not Unusual."

White, who also played with the British band Herman's Hermits, was dubbed "one of the busier drummers in England from the late '50s through the mid-'70s," according to AllMusic.

In the late 1980s, White moved to the United States, living in Caldwell, New Jersey, and became a drumming instructor. He also married Thea Ruth, a librarian known for providing the voice of Muriel on the Cartoon Network show "Courage the Cowardly Dog."

In 2008, White played drums for the Smithereens when the New Jersey-based rock band recorded a cover version of "P.S. I Love You."

Tommy played drums for some of the greatest named stars. This personal feat offers a firsthand testimony to his greatness. The promised hope is that such talent can be enjoyed throughout all eternity. (Luke 23:43). My respect and condolences to the White family. Be comforted in knowing that we can only envision the possibilities of life in Paradise!

RIP Andy. It was a pleasure learning from you but it was a privilege to know you. You were a true talent and above all a humble, warm gentleman with a heart of gold and the patience of a saint. I will miss your amusing stories and your eloquent style. God Bless the White family and may you find relief in knowing that Andy made the world a happier place for all that were lucky enough to know him. Cheers my friend!! Well done!!

To the entire Andy White Family and friends , Be very proud that Andy was selected by George Martin producer of the up coming mega Beatles to hold off on ringo starr for a must do up coming hit tunes of the seed for Beatlemania ..I'm sure it was a bit awkward for THE BEATLES as a whole but felt the decision was only part of musical history , Hats off for Ringo Starr , it had to be an enormous pill of pride to swallow and endure ...The out come became history many times over for both drummers...God Bless you Mr. White

I lived through the sixties. Have a vast collection of old record albums. Was there to experience the Beatles and the British Invasion. Love the music of the sixties and electric blues......but all this time, I thought the Beatles had two drummers, Ringo Starr and Pete Best.

You learn something everyday.

Thank you for your sixties music contributions Mr. White. RIP
