Bob Casale Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 18, 2014.
NEW YORK (AP) - Bob Casale, the guitarist for Devo, best known for the 1980 hit "Whip It," has died of heart failure, his brother and band member Gerald Casale said Tuesday. He was 61.

Devo founding member Casale said in a statement that his younger brother's death Monday was "sudden" and "a total shock."

"As an original member of Devo, Bob Casale was there in the trenches with me from the beginning," Casale said. "He was my level-headed brother, a solid performer and talented audio engineer, always giving more than he got."

No further details on his death were provided.

The Ohio-based Devo introduced themselves to the world in 1977 by making a frenetic version of the Rolling Stones' "Satisfaction." The new wave band released its Brian Eno-produced debut, "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!," in 1978 and reached platinum status with 1980's "Freedom of Choice," which featured "Whip It."

Gerald Casale formed Devo with lead singer Mark Mothersbaugh. Alan Myers, the group's drummer, died last year after a battle with cancer age at 58.

Devo is short for devolution, the idea that man was regressing into an earlier state.

What a touching and moving legacy for Bob Casale one of the world's leader in this unique musical endeavor, one we will probably never experience again. A great talent who has done so much and cared so deeply for others through fine works. “I pray that he may grant you through the abundance of his glory to be made mighty in the man you are inside, with power through his spirit… (Ephesians 3:16) Bob was a gifted person who is surely a loss to us all but we are inspired by the many astounding accomplishments. May the family have peace we cherish the special memories.

This was truly an amazing person with so much talent the loss is clearly ours. Prayers fill our hearts and burst forth from our mouths to God asking him to let us remember clearly the love we have for this wonderful person gone from our lives never forgetting the joy we shared. Hebrews 6:10.

I am deeply saddened to lose Bob 2 way too soon. We worked together on countless projects over the years and shared may laughs along the way. He was a talented man and always a pleasure to be around. I will miss you my friend RIP.

Rest in peace Spud-boy Bob2. I will always remember skateboarding to your music in the 70's-80's-90's and 2000's. I'll be 49 soon, still skateboarding and still a huge fan. That's a longtime time being DEVOted to DEVO. My son Tyler loves your music since he was born in 1994 :-) So many great memories listening to and seeing DEVO in concert. I could go on and on, I just wanted you to know how special you are to my son Tyler and I. We will miss you Bob2. Love, Tyler and Jimmy Spud-Boy

From an ardent, die-hard Devo fan of many decades, I say thank you for giving me and all of us so much great music. Bob, you were an innovator, and you seemed so modest, decent, and self-assured. You gave up a lot to be with your brother in Devo, but then you and the rock world gained so much more. I've grown up with you all so long that I feel like I've lost an uncle, a really cool uncle who played guitar. My sincerest condolences to the entire Casale family.

Our deepest sympathy to the Casale family during this time of sorrow. We are so thankful to Bob for sharing his gift of music with us. For a moment, please, just imagine John in Paradise. Each morning, he awakes feeling rested and eager to begin his day. He has no aches or pains. Any infirmities he once had are gone. All his senses--sight, hearing, smell, touch, and taste function perfectly. His energy is abundant, his work is enjoyable, his friends are many, and all his worries are gone. Such will be the blessing he can enjoy under God's Kingdom. (Matthew 6:9-10) What a grand reunion that will be! Remembering Bob Casale with much joy in my heart.

I posted this on the ClubDEVO Facebook page on Feb. 19.

Like a lot of us, I'm sad, wishing the family & band well, & maybe feeling one's mortality a bit more. I've been on the verge of tears all day-- kind of surprised myself but these guys are my age and they & their music have spoken to me all these years. We're all like a big quirky family. I loved DEVO from the late 70s, finally saw them in '88 in DC, at Lollapooza in CA in '96, Universal in '99, back in DC in 2009 (both shows) plus probably some dates I've forgotten. In '97 at the Dragonfly Club in LA we had 'Punk Karaoke Night', where Bob1 & some other pioneer band members backed us up, the amateur singers-- I sang a DEVO song & later thanked Bob1 12 years later back in DC after one of the 2009 DC shows. Met Mark ca. 1997 in LA at his museum show-- part music, part visual art (Museum of Modern Art?).

I've been playing DEVO videos on YouTube all day & found this-- it's nice to see younger generations appreciating DEVO. It's a reminder that the music never dies.
