Years ago I was attending one of the Byron Nelson Golf Tournaments, and a golf cart pulled up beside me in the golf cart was Lord Byron himself and I was just about to ask him for his autograph and about 12 children suddenly surrounded him asking for his autograph then he was busy signing all their autograph books. He was so nice and you could tell on the man's face that was driving the cart he thought that this was a bit much for Byron to have to deal with, I don't mean to say that Byron minded at all, in fact the other way around, I think the man (driver of the cart) was just concerned for Byron. I just walked away I did not want to bother Byron, but never I have forgotten that moment, what a wonderful nice man he was and is.

Dear Mrs. Nelson, during the last weeks and months I have thought more and more about Byron and his inspiring life. And even though I barely knew him, he continues to influence me in many of my day-to-day activities. Thank you both for allowing someone like me to feel like a personal friend.

Dear Mrs. Nelson, I share with you, and all the other admirers of Mr. Nelson, the deep loss his demise leaves with us. I only "knew" him from a few brief corresponces over the last 3 years, but the impact of his kindness and genuine nature shown through in his personal notes and willingness to sign a few photographs from his golfing days upon my requests. His powerful Christian presence is all through the notes he always included, as well as a wonderful sense of humor. I will always treasure these brief encounters with a truely great man.
I will pray for you and your family as you work through the loss together. GOD be with you, as I know he will be with Mr. Nelson's soul. Randall Huber, North Port, FL.

I never knew Byron Nelson, but
his brother Charles directed the
chorus I was in at David Lipscomb
College in 1962-63. Both brothers
have excelled in their individual
professions, but more importantly
both have spread God's light through their exemplary Christian
lives. My husband and I worshipped
at Welch Street Church of Christ from 1992 on, where the Nelson family had a major influence. I have continued to worship there since my husband's death in 2003. My husband and Byron Nelson
now share the same peaceful cemetery and, when the Lord returns, should share a heavenly
home.
My prayers continue with the
whole family. What a wonderful
legacy this family has left!

Peggy, We are not friends, but we speak, and we are sisters. My husband and I love and appreciate you and our Brother Byron. You hand us our bulletin each Sunday morning and we usually sit just across and behind you in church. We have watched you and Byron sing and praise God. We have seen him pat your hand or shoulder in love and appreciation for your faithfulness and enthusiasm. We will miss our Brother Byron, but we will remember how he made everyone feel comfortable around him and how he enjoyed worshiping at church. We will remember how he loved the children, the Christmas program, and of course golf. Continue your good work and remember you are in our prayers. You make a difference to so many.

Although Byron and I had only briefly crossed paths over the years around FWC and RHCC, I didn't get the "full effect" of what a truly great man of God he was until I found myself in the same Bible Class with him at RHCC. I could have sat and talked with him for hours if time would have permitted. His wisdom and his character was an inspiration to me and everyone that he came in contact with. He was always quick to autograph his book for me and to take this picture with me and my new granddaughter, Joon Nelson,(taken on 9-10-06 in our Bible class). What a great man. I'll miss him as I know everyone else will, and I'll cherish the memories forever My heart goes out to Peggy. Thank you Byron and Peggy for sharing your lives with us at RHCC. Sharkey Nelson

20 years ago I was in Houston trying to qualify for the U.S. Open. Byron Nelson was there at the practise area. I nervously approached him for a closer look and possible autograph. Mr. Nelson greeted me warmly without hesitation, asked me how I played and invited me to sit down next to him on a bench for a photograph! That photo remains on display in my den and not a day goes by that I don't recall the moment, the man and his legend! Here's to you Mr. Nelson and all that you brought to the great game of golf.

Peggy,
My favorite memory of Byron was at your piano recital several years ago. When you had finished playing, Byron said, "The best money I ever spent was for the piano for Peggy to play". And then he said, "No, no, I am mistaken. The best money I ever spent was on the marriage license to marry Peggy".
He taught us how to love one another and was an example of how to treat other people. He will be greatly missed by all of us.

Dear Peggy and family,
It was a true pleasure to be able to attend the celebration of the life of a true champion of our faith. May God continue to richly bless your family during this special time. As I sat and listened to each one talk of their memories it became so very clear that the underlying theme of this extrodinary life was his love for others. Few men will ever be known for fleshing out the fruits of the spirit, but many were and will be blessed for having known such a man.

Dear Mrs. Nelson,
Being one who plays at that maddening, yet thrilling game of golf myself, I always felt so proud to see Mr. Nelson and you sitting in MY church building every week. Imagine my delight when I got a letter from you both welcoming me to Richland Hills Church after I placed membership!
That has meant so much to me in the sense that Mr. Nelson constantly demonstrated the grace and light and humility of Christ, despite his achievements, despite his fame, despite the offer of the world to have his name shine more largely and ring more loudly. No, he chose a truly Christ-like life, one of quiet and solid goodness and integrity. Awesome, awesome example. BOTH of you.
Thank you so much and may Jesus bless you and your family with His warmth and peace in this time of loss, with a knowing that SO VERY SOON Jesus is returning to take us all home. I would like to reserve a place next to you and Mr. Nelson in Heaven one day, for at least a few feasts, as we dine with the Savior Himself! How sweet it is to know that we shall all be together again!

Mrs. Nelson, Our Dad always looked forward to the third week in May, in part because of the Colonial Golf tournament, but in part because he got to see Byron Nelson. Our Dad was the minister for several years at the West Berry Church of Christ, and Mr. Nelson always came to church on that Sunday morning. Our Dad passed away recently as well. In the days before he died, he talked about all the people he hoped to meet and visit with in heaven. The list was long and varied, but will now include Mr. Nelson at the top of the list. If it's any consolation to you and your family, please know that Mr. Nelson has at least one person -- our Dad -- who will greet him with open arms.

My husband and I have been members of Richland Hills Church of Christ for 26 years, and years before that, were members of Walnut Hill Church of Christ in Dallas. I clearly remember how Byron would always attend our early service at Walnut Hill on the Sunday morning of the Byron Nelson Tournament. We admired him so much for that. Then we got to admire him again at Richland Hills, when we watched him and Peggy arrive for the Wednesday night service. (We attended different services on Sunday, so we didn't see him then.)
We were always so glad to see them arrive, knowing that he still considered (at age 94) that being at church was the most important place he could be. Others will talk about his wonderful accomplishments in golf, and rightly so. But my husband and I got to see the real Byron, the dedicated follower of Jesus Christ, and we can only rejoice that he is now with the Father. We feel sorrow for the family members and friends that were so close to him, but we know that they rejoice as well at this time. With great admiration and Christian love, Tip and Dorothy Bullock

Mrs. Nelson,
Unfortunately, I never had the honor of meeting Mr. Nelson. I can only imagine what being in the presence of such a great man would be like. I do not know much about golf, but I do know that Mr. Nelson has left a far more important legacy. To "walk the walk" as he did is by far the most rewarding life to live. He is now claiming his reward!! PRAISE GOD!!May God bless and keep you during this time of loss.

The first time I ever saw him, he was down at the church when we were having a cleanup day, and I had no clue who he was. He was on his crutches, "supervising". He was very nice. I am so sorry that I never got a chance to meet this incredible man. My Boyfriend and I were watching the news about his life and both of us sat crying, and both thinking that we were overcome by this man, everyone knew he was a great golfer but most importantly was that he was a man of honor. We were incredibly moved by the fact that they only mentioned his golfing ability a few times, they made us feel sad, I guess We all would like to leave with our loved ones the great legacy that he has. I want my family to feel the same way I felt when people he knew talked about him undoubtledly a man w/ a love so great for his sport and for his community. He obviously was a kind gentle man and never met a stranger. It is very difficult to write exactly what we felt watching the news reports. God Bless the family and may all of us learn from this great man, that kindness is a wonderful thing.

Peggy, I have several wonderful memories to write about but these two are foremost in my mind. I will never forget you and Byron dancing a little jig in my dinning room at care group one night. I just heard recently on the radio that marriage is like a dance and let me say, Fred and Ginger could not have done it better than you and Byron. It was always a "Ball" to watch you two. And with that, this one final memory that God allowed Byron to say farewell to me with. I will always remember the feel of Byron's large hand wrapping around mine and giving it a grip like it was a golf club. In his nineties Byron had a firmer handshake than most thirty year old men. His last Sunday at RHCC we were sitting in the pew directly opposite you and I happened to look over and catch a precious moment. That morning Byron was looking off towards the stage and you were in search of something in his pocket. Byron never moved his head or his eyes toward you but as your hand reached up and came near his pocket he put his hand on yours and gave you that ever so gentle squeeze on your hand. He never looked, he just sensed your presence, he knew you were there and with those large, strong hands he gently showed his acceptance, approval and longing for you. It was a Byronism because that was how he was without fail. Thank you for living out the vows.
So much love to you.

Peggy,
I only knew the Christian side of Byron. I considered him a wonderful friend. I remember you and Byron wearing your blue jeans to church so I would not feel out of place at church in my blue jeans. Byron told me if he had to he would crawl up the steps to watch me and my wife be baptized. I have learned so much from Byron, my life will never be the same because of him. I have so much to say but I have to leave room for others to write. God Bless You.

Dear Peggy, A few years ago (1995)when Byron was being honored at the Ford Senior Players Championship in Dearborn, Michigan, you and Byron gave about a half hour of your time to visit with my father and mother, Carl & Colleen Stieper, and I. Byron was my father's hero and when I was born in 1952 I was given my name in his honor....Nelson. I have always felt blessed to have been named after such a fine man. I cannot express enough how much you and Byron touched my family on that Saturday afternoon. My father was quite ill ( dieing a few years thereafter) and could hardly speak. You and Byron carried the conversation. When my Dad returned home and laid down on his couch, exhausted, he managed to whisper..."I love that guy". Pictures of Byron and my father from the 1940's and again in 1995 are prominantly displayed in my office. Again my thanks. On behalf of my family including my mother, who turns 90 this year, my sympathies to you and may God's blessings continue to be with you. Sincerely, Nelson B. Stieper, Dearborn, Michigan

Mr. and Mrs. Nelson,
To Mrs. Nelson i am deeply saddened by your loss. I know Byron was a good man and had a big heart and cared for others. He will be deeply missed and we all know he is in a better place. He was an angel while here on earth rather it be as a gentleman or an golfer he always carried himself well and with respect to others. I will never forget meeting the two of u at Richland Hills Church of Christ and the talk Byron and I had. I could tell all the stories that people told who met him were true. He was a great man. One of the few people in this life that made an impact on so many. Tomorrow I will be at the public funeral to say my final goodbyes to a man I looked up to. And a man I called a hero. May he be with all of us as we allow him to rest in peace and give each of us the strength to face tomorrow with great strength. He was one of a kind like a jewel that is rare. I join with millions in saying thank you Byron and Peggy for all u did to help children and even help adults realize there is so much to be thankful for. A Texas Legend is what he is and was.

Peggy,
God's Love is very apparent in You and was in Byron. He always made people feel great about themselves. I wish all married and engaged couples could have heard how he spoke about you. He always told everyone, even my family, kind words about me. It was so exciting watching him after service stating How great Rick Atchely did and how great the sermon was. He was a true picture of kindness and Christianity and will be greatly missed. Our lives were blessed to have been friends with both of you.

Mr. Nelson was the ultimate example of caring. I am reminded of the John Lennon song "Imagine". Imagine a world where everyone was as nice as Byron Nelson. His life was a bright light in the world. God Bless him and thank you God for letting us experience his life.

Dear Peggy,
Byron humbled himself, and therefore God exalted him. God gave him his talents and I believe God is being glorified through his life and certainly through yours. It has been a blessing knowing you. I was closer to you through Ladies Bible Class, but I know that Byron was just as much in love with the Lord as you are. What an example you two have been. You introduced me to Byron for the first time just a month ago and what a blessing that was. I am thankful I had the privalege of meeting the great man behind a great woman before he went to see the Lord. My prayers have been and will continue to be lifted up for you.
Love, Roni Noel

I had the great joy to work with Mr. Nelson and Peggy at the Byron Nelson, in the same tent with them and what a man he was, he shook every players hand and had something to say to them, he truly was a gentleman, and what a honor it is to be part of the PGA will men like this in it, our thoughts and prayers go out to you Peggy and in time the hurt will ease, he is watching down over you all the time.

I have never known a better person to emulate. If I can come close to being as fine a person as Byron Nelson I will have lead a great life.

Dear Peggy,
We are so sorry for your loss. We thought so much of Byron. When Irving had his heart surgery, Byron sent him an autographed copy of his book. He was a wonderful christian.

It has been a pleasure to get to know Byron during our times sitting by him at services. I will personally never forget many of the stories of his personal victories throughout his life. Byron's life and outlook are something that will stay with me. My family and I were blessed by knowing Byron Nelson.
