Christopher Bowman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 11, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Christopher Bowman, the former U.S. figure skating champion dubbed "Bowman the Showman" for his flair on the ice, died Thursday of a possible drug overdose, authorities said. He was 40.

Bowman was pronounced dead at 12:06 p.m., said Coroner's Lt. Joe Bale, who wasn't immediately able to provide more details about the possible drug overdose. Bowman's body was found at a motel in the North Hills section of Los Angeles, and an autopsy was planned for this weekend, Bale said.

"He just passed away in his sleep," Bowman's mother, Joyce, told the Detroit Free Press, which first reported details of his death. "His friend told me that he was fine. He just went to bed and didn't wake up."

Bowman, a former child actor, was one of figure skating's bigger personalities in the late 1980s and early 1990s. Immensely talented, with a gift for performance that few others could match, he won the U.S. men's figure skating titles in 1989 and 1992, and was runner-up in 1987 and 1991.

He also won a silver medal at the 1989 world championships, and a bronze the next year. He skated in the 1988 and 1992 Winter Olympics, finishing seventh in 1988 and fourth in 1992.

"If I had to pick the three most talented skaters of all time, I would pick Christopher as one," Brian Boitano, the 1988 Olympic champion, told the Chicago Tribune. "He had natural charisma, natural athleticism, he could turn on a crowd in a matter of seconds and he always seemed so relaxed about it."

But as talented as he was on the ice, Bowman could be just as big a challenge off it. He bounced from coach to coach long before it became fashionable - he once won Skate America when he was in-between coaches - and freely admitted that practice was something that just didn't interest him much.

"Each and every competition that I train for, prepare for, is always a personal challenge for me because, as we all know, the training and discipline between each event is very difficult for me," Bowman said in 1992.

He battled drug problems, and underwent treatment at least twice - once before the 1988 Olympics and then again after the Albertville Games in 1992.

He also had run-ins with the law.

In November 2004, he pleaded no contest to two misdemeanors involving having a gun while drunk in Rochester Hills, Mich.

In 1993, while skating with the Ice Capades, he was beaten at a hotel in a seedy neighborhood in Pittsburgh, according to a police report.

Richard Callaghan, coach of Bowman's longtime rival, Todd Eldredge, said he was saddened to learn of Bowman's death.

"When Todd told me, I said, 'What a shame,"' Callaghan told the Free Press. "Christopher was such a nice person. Even though he was troubled, he was very genuine and friendly.

"There was a great rivalry between Christopher and Todd because they were so opposite. Christopher was always on; he was the star when it came to doing any competitions. Most of us didn't know how he did it, but he did."

Born in Hollywood, on March 30, 1967, Bowman had a part in the TV series "Little House on the Prairie" for one season and appeared in dozens of commercials. He got into coaching after his skating career was finished, and the Free Press said he had lived in the Detroit area from 1995 until last February.

Recently, Bowman had returned to acting. He had a role as an assistant coach in the upcoming Brian J. De Palma-directed movie "Down and Distance" starring Gary Busey.

Bowman had a daughter with his former wife, Annette Bowman, according to the Free Press.

It´s Thanksgiving time again... I remember the Thanksgiving dinner my mom and I had with Chris while he was on tour with Ice Capades in Worcester, MA. It was 1992. We had met Chris earlier in the year at the `92 Worlds in Oakland. We had come to see him on tour... we met him after the show in the hallway of the hotel... he seemed lonely and kind of alone... my mom invited him to join us for dinner, and he graciously accepted. He was a lovely man, and deeply missed.

To all of Chris' family and friends:

I am just seeing this for the first time. I have not skated competitively in decades so did not know of his passing. I am shocked in this moment. I did not know him personally but like many others he was one of few skaters I always loved to see skate.

I remember when I marshalled Pacific Coast Championships I was so taken by his maturity on the ice, I think he was around 10 years old then (maybe skating Novice Men?). He was barely taller than the wall that surrounded the ice but he was a phenom even back then.

While it has been many years since he left for heaven, I know that some days it can feel like yesterday. I send you all warmest Aloha!

We remember and miss a vivid personality and a talented skater. I can still see him, charming us all with a wink and a grin, so handsome and so much fun to watch on the ice. Rest in peace, "Hans Brinker from......"!

Even all these years later I still am remembering Christopher. A few months ago I had it in my head to watch him skate to What a Wonderful World only to find it was gone from the internet. Then I came to visit my parents a couple of weeks ago and found the videotape I'd recorded it on. It was the only one that survived of the many I had back in the day. It felt very serendipitous which has only added to my thoughts of him. I am going through a hard time so perhaps I feel a kinship with him in that small way.

I have been reading about him, as I never knew or met him. I was only a fan. It has touched me greatly to read all the kind words and stories. I pray he now has the peace that seemed to elude him much of his life. My thoughts are also with his friends, family, and anyone touched by him, especially his daughter.

January 11, 2011

Dear Mr. & Mrs. Bowman:
On this the 3rd anniversary of Christopher's death I wanted to let you know how much he meant to me and how his death impacted my life. I skated with Christopher growing up although I never had the talent he had, but he always inspired me to strive for my dreams. Shortly before his death I was fired from my job from drinking to excess at a company party, which of course I refused to acknowledge as MY problem. It was only when I heard of Christopher's death that I woke up and realized how serious drugs and alcohol can be even when we think we are just having a good time. Because of Christopher I checked myself into rehab. I am pleased to tell you that I am still sober and on January 25 will have 3 years free of all drugs and alcohol. Christopher's death was a tragic loss, but I want you to know that the silver lining is that it led to my sobriety and probably countless others who have been touched by Christopher's life. His memory will live on forever.

To the family: May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. My dear Joyce and Nelson, I am very sad to hear of Christopher's passing. He was a brilliant flash across the evanescent night sky, magnificent enough to carry us all along for the ride. Now, there is a peace which passes all understanding. I know you are believers in the blessed assurance that we will all meet again. Please pray, as I will. God Bless you. Love Mary Hughes

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man."

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Nelson & Joyce
This comes from your relatives in Chattanooga, TN. Robert's son, Wayne & wife. We didn't know Chris personally, but feel like we do. We watched him over and over again on TV and bragged to everyone that THIS is our First Cousin!!! He sure was talented. Just a joy to watch! Wish we could have gotten to know him face to face. May God bring you peace in this terrible loss for your family.

Christopher was a hero of mine growing up. As a young skater, he was an inspiration to me. I'll never forget having the pleasure to share the ice with him at North Hollywood. He always had time to goof around with us kids and make us laugh. I hope that your soul is at peace now. God bless you.

"Hans Brinker from Hell"Chris was my good friend, and occaisonial roller blading partner.although, without a pick on the front of the boot, some moves were a bit hard.He could keep up.I was also his tattoo artist, and "Nobody's Perfect was his thought.I'll miss his smile, humor, and wacky frame of mind.I'm sure he got angry from time to time, but I never saw a frown, without a quick smile right on it's heels.Damn,he was fast! He was so young...and young at heart. I will remember Christopher as the young 9 year old I skated with and had off ice jump class with at Harriet and Al Derea's studio in Hollywood. Those were the good old days.
He will be missed in the skating world tremendously. He had so much more to offer the sport.
God Bless his little daughter.

Our

condolences go out to Christopher's family for this loss. Christopher was like

a son to us and brother to our skating daughter. We spent many happy hours

"Bowman the Showman". May you rest in peasce Christopher. Heaven now has

a true skating star.

I met Christopher when I brought my daughter to him for coaching in the Detroit area. We didn't know him for long, but he was pleasant, kind, encouraging, and inspirational to my daughter. We were shocked to learn about his passing. He probably didn't know just how many peoples' lives he affected. He had his burdens, as all people do, but he will be fondly remembered by many people.

Andrea (Porter) Peters

January 16, 2008

Christopher coached me and made a very big impression. He was tougher than any other coach had been, making me work very hard. However he was also the most encouraging and he gave me much constructive criticism. His praise meant so much more to me because I knew he MEANT what he was telling me. He answered plenty of questions, and made me feel like I was worth spending his time working with at a point when I questioned so much of my ability. With Christopher, my skating options were wide open and he was truly there for me. I will NEVER forget the way he treated me and how it made me feel. That speaks to his true nature. He was a good soul. Despite any of his downfalls, he was good inside and sadly, I don't think he realized that fully while he was here on Earth. I hope that his daughter Bianca is able to realize that her father meant so much, to so many, and that he never intended to leave her. To everyone that feels the sadness of his passing, my heart is with you all.

I saw Christopher when he skated the Nationals in Orlando. I was down near the cameras just off the ice as my husband was working on the crew. He was amazing and made me a skating fan. I loved the way he performed....He was an awesome, amazing skater and I'll never forget him.

Father we entrust our brother Christopher to your mercy. You loved him greatly in this life: now that he is freed from all its cares, give him happiness and peace forever. Welcome him now into paradise where there will be no more sorrow, no more weeping or pain, but only peace and joy with Jesus your Son, and the Holy Spirit forever and ever.
May God hold Christopher in the palm of His hand. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. My deepest sympathy.

My condolences to the family. Christopher was one of the people that I had most enjoyed watching on the ice. He will be missed.

I didn't know Chris personally, but I felt like I knew him. I am a skater who grew up watching Chris. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Bowman family. I am sure all the angels are now learning how to skate...Rest in Peace Chris...
