Chuck Daly Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 9, 2009.
DETROIT (AP) — Chuck Daly, who coached the original Dream Team to the Olympic gold medal in 1992 after winning back-to-back NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons, has died. He was 78.

He died Saturday morning in Jupiter, Fla., with his family by his side, the team said. The Pistons announced in March that the Hall of Fame coach had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and was undergoing treatment.

He was renowned for his ability to create harmony out of diverse personalities at all levels of the game, whether they were Ivy Leaguers at Pennsylvania, Dream Teamers Michael Jordan and Charles Barkley, or Pistons as dissimilar as Dennis Rodman and Joe Dumars.

"It's a players' league. They allow you to coach them or they don't," Daly once said. "Once they stop allowing you to coach, you're on your way out."

Daly was voted one of the 10 greatest coaches of the NBA's first half-century in 1996, two years after being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He was the first coach to win both an NBA title and Olympic gold.

"I think Chuck understood people as well as basketball," former Pistons guard Joe Dumars told The Associated Press in 1995. "It's a people business."

Daly did famously at the Barcelona Games with NBA superstars such as Magic Johnson, Jordan, Larry Bird and Barkley, using a different lineup in every game.

"I played against Chuck's teams throughout the NBA for a lot of years. He always had his team prepared, he's a fine coach," Bird said shortly after Daly's diagnosis became public.

"Chuck did a good job of keeping us together," Bird said. "It wasn't about who scored the most points, it was about one thing: winning the gold medal."

Daly humbled the NBA superstars by coaching a group of college players to victory in a controlled scrimmage weeks before the Olympics.

"I was the happiest man in the gym," Daly said afterward.

Daly also made the right moves for the Pistons, who were notorious for their physical play with Bill Laimbeer and Rick Mahorn leading the fight, Dennis Rodman making headlines and Hall of Fame guards Isiah Thomas and Dumars lifting the team to titles in 1989 and 1990.

Former Piston John Salley gave Daly the nickname Daddy Rich for his impeccably tailored suits.

Daly had a career regular-season record of 638-437 in 13 NBA seasons. In 12 playoff appearances, his teams went 75-51. He left Detroit as the Pistons' leader in regular-season and playoff victories.

"The Daly family and the entire Detroit Pistons and Palace Sports and Entertainment family is mourning the loss of Chuck Daly," family and team spokesman Matt Dobek said. "Chuck left a lasting impression with everyone he met both personally and professionally and his spirit will live with all of us forever."

Despite his success, Daly wasn't part of a Coach of the Year presentation until he handed the trophy to then-Detroit coach Rick Carlisle in 2002.

"This is as close as I've ever been to that thing," Daly said, looking at the Red Auerbach Trophy.

Born July 20, 1930 in St. Mary's, Pa., Charles Jerome Daly played college ball at St. Bonaventure and Bloomsburg. After two years in the military, he coached for eight seasons at Punxsutawney (Pa.) High School and then spent six years as an assistant at Duke.

Succeeding Bob Cousy as coach at Boston College, Daly coached the Eagles to a 26-24 record over two seasons and then spent seven seasons at Pennsylvania, leading the Quakers to the Ivy League championship in 1972-75.

Daly joined the NBA coaching ranks in 1978 as an assistant under Billy Cunningham in Philadelphia. His first head coaching job was with Cleveland, but he was fired after the Cavaliers went 9-32 over the first half of the 1981-82 season.

In 1983, Daly took over a Detroit team that had never had two straight winning seasons and led the Pistons to nine straight. He persuaded the likes of Rodman, Thomas, Dumars, Mahorn and Laimbeer and to play as a unit and they responded with back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990.

Far from being intimidated by the Pistons' Bad Boys image, Daly saw the upside of it.

"I've also had players who did not care," he said a decade later. "I'd rather have a challenging team."

After leaving Detroit, Daly took over the New Jersey Nets for two seasons and led them to the playoffs both times.

He left broadcasting to return to the bench 1997 with the Orlando Magic and won 74 games over two seasons, then retired at the age of 68 because he said he was weary of the travel.

Daly joined the Vancouver Grizzlies as a senior adviser in 2000.

In retirement, he split time between residences in Jupiter, Fla., and suburban Detroit.

The Pistons retired No. 2 to honor their former coach's two NBA titles in January 1997.

"Without you, there wouldn't be us," Mahorn said to Daly during the ceremony.

Daly is survived by his wife, Terry, as well as daughter Cydney and grandchildren Sebrina and Connor.

Associated Press writer Jim Irwin in Detroit and AP Sports Writer Cliff Brunt in Indianapolis contributed.

For Chuck...who coached the original Dream Team to the Olympic gold medal in 1992 after winning back-to-back NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Dear Terry,
I am a friend from your Duke University days in Durham. You and Chuck visited with us for bridge at our home in Willowhaven Country Club community and at other social gatherings. We used to share some fun times. Remember the Jacque Hedricks, the Steve Spurriers, the Dave VanVleets, the Charlie Harmans, the John Fredricks, etc.? I’ve tried several times over the years to catch up with you to no avail.

I am deeply saddened to learn of Chuck’s death. What a fantastic career he enjoyed. I’m so proud of him.

May our Lord cradle you in His loving arms; give you comfort, strength, and peace during this difficult moment in life’s journey. May memories of your togetherness and family bring additional comfort to you and Cydney.

With love and deepest sympathy,

Shirl Johnson-Turpin
(Former Mrs. J.B. Johnson)

A TRUE FAN

May 26, 2009

You never know how a person affects your life. Though I've never met Coach Daly I feel like I knew him. I am a HUGE basketball fan and enjoyed watching the Detroit Pistons play against the Bulls, Lakers, etc. I loved watching Coach Daly on the sidelines so passionate about the game.

My mother died from pancreatic several years ago. I was so sad when I heard that was the disease he had. I hope in time the family heals from not just the loss, but the suffering that comes with this disease.

When someone is that great of a person it makes the loss seem that much more difficult to bear. I know that God will give your family the strength you need to get through this time.(Ps 55:22)

May the memories you shared keep him alive in your hearts.

When I first met Chuck, I walked away knowing I had just met a remarkable person. As the years went by, each encounter was richer than the last. The story of a friendship is written in the pages of the heart. I am surely a better person because of him.

He was compassionate and respectful of others, always making everyone feel confident and capable. He left a unique and lasting imprint on innumerable lives. For those of us that were honored to know him, we have had a glimpse of greatness that will never be duplicated. I am humbled to have been his friend.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again
May God hold you in the palm of his hand.

So long Pal. I'm gonna miss you.

May 12, 2009

Every year we saw Chuck and Terry when Chuck came "home" to Kane, Pa. And every year he would ask my children how they were doing in school. As my daughter entered Middle School, he asked her again how she was doing in school. My daughter said she was on the honor roll, and Chuck complimented her. He then asked her if she knew how he had gotten where he was in life. "Because of my education! Every day of my life is fun. It IS work, it IS a job, but it is FUN. I have a blast getting to do what I do every day! And I get to do that because of my education! YOU work hard, study hard because it IS an investment in YOUR future." THAT was the Chuck Daly my children knew, always putting the positive spotlight on them, not on himself. He was one of a kind!

Our family, as well as so many others in Kane have so many fond memories of this GREAT MAN, who also happened to be a great Coach! Listening to his NBA, "dream team" and his world travels stories. But most of all for the personal connection he made with so many people, young and old, who had the pleaure of meeting our hometown "Star". Chuck Daly never forgot where he came from, or the people he grew up with.

Terry Daly, a true "lady" who always extended her hand in freindship with such grace and class. A wonderful supportive wife..."Daly's" biggest fan!!
Terry Daly...the strong, poised, beautiful woman, who was Chuck Daly's most valuable asset... we send you and your family our deepest sympathies.

Kane will never be the same without the "star" that shined so brightly for our small town!

Rest in Peace "Daly"

Dear Mrs. Daly and family,
Please accept my deepest sympathies. I have been following basketball since Coach Daly was coaching in college and coming back to western Pa. for the annual Dapper Dan Roundball Classic. Reflecting on his career in the last few days, I cannot think of another coach in the game's modern history who achieved success at every level--scholastic, collegiate, professional and even international--like Coach Daly did. I'm sure his success is testament to many wonderful qualities, but from a fan's vantage point, none more important than his almost instinctive realization that coaching is about understanding people more than it is about Xs and Os, or even Ws and Ls. I hope you take comfort in the knowledge that his tremendous legacy will inspire basketball fans, players and coaches everywhere for years to come.

I was so sorry to hear that Chuck Daly has passed away. It hurts to lose someone that we care about no matter what the circumstances may be. He truly was one of the GREAT coaches in the NBA. Take comfort knowing that he is no longer suffering and no longer in pain. Hold on to the hope that God gives. I offer my condolences to you all.

Daly family,
My sincere condolences on the death of your loved one. I loved watching Chuck coach the Detroit Pistons as well as the Olympic team. He made a deep impact on the sport and those who loved to watch his detailed work that resulted in a championship. God cares for us and promises a resurrection of all those in the memorial tomb. His words at John 5:28 in the scriptures, bring us comfort and give us hope.

We offer our deepest condolences on your dear loss. It's obvious that Mr. Daly was loved for his talent as a coach and qualities as a giving person. Losing a precious loved one is never easy. May the "Father of tender mercies and the God of all comfort," and your dear and precious memories bring you some solace. (2 Cor 1:3,4/John 5:28,29)

I attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1969 to 1972 and also had the privilege of broadcasting Penn basketball on WXPN. There was never a finer coach and person than Coach Daly. He and our teams provided me and my classmates with incredible memories. He was the consummate coach and gentleman. I was thrilled with his future successes. He taught us how to conduct ourselves with dignity in victory and, rarely, in defeat. May he rest in peace. He will forever be a cherished part of my life.
