From the first time I saw David Brenner, I knew it was a love affair he had with comedy. He made an appearance at one of the colleges in Albany, NY back in the late 70s & he was an immediate hit. Then, after I moved on to Philadelphia in the early 80s, I became acquainted with a couple of his books he had written. At the time, the love of my life was seriously injured in a pedestrian accident in 1984. It was not known then if he would survive. From April 1984 through September 1984, he was a patient at the Hospital of the Univ. of PA. I visited him every day with the exception of 2 days. I picked up a copy of David's book, "Soft Pretzels & Mustard". It was that very book that brought me through that horrible time of our lives while keeping my sanity. And so, although David left us too soon, in my opinion, he remains today to be the most favorite comedian in my life. Thank you, David; your humor has never been copied.

I loved his comedy very much! It carried on in his book Pretzels with Mustard. My Mom & I both read it & thought we'd never stop laughing! Everything he said was so vivid that your mind really could "see" what he was talking about. One instance from the book still cracks me up, his Father "nailing" over cooked liver to shoe as new sole! Hilarious! Yes David, you are very sadly missed down here. But I'll bet you're keeping Heaven in stitches! RIP You Deserve It! Dawn a forever fan

AdThe memories and laughs still are coming and giving us all his special kind of making the worst grumpy person smile.
His memory and talent that never can be replaced will live on and on through the ages to come as one of the funniest , kindest persons anyone could ever listen to.
I know his family has so many more great memories of David that will be past on through his children and grand children to come. His eyes always had that sparkle that only comes through defining what a wonderful caring soul he was. I know he is in heaven giving his special talent and smiles to all the Angels and souls gone way before there way before his debut into his heavenly mansion that God reserved for him and his family. He will continue to live in our hearts here on earth giving us so many reasons to Love the man and his comedic style to comfort our souls when we needed to forget our troubles and just laugh. Thank you dear David , you will be missed so fondly and remembered as the so perfect comidian of his time.

“For God is not unrighteous so as to forget your work and the love you showed for his name by ministering and continuing to minister to the holy ones.” (Hebrews 6:10). This one will never be forgotten for all the work that was done for this community and especially those encouraged and inspired in this persons' care. May God continue to strengthen the family and friends in these “times hard to deal with” (2 Tim 3:1), especially without a beloved one such as this talented and loved person gone from our lives but not forgotten.

David Brenner was a favorite of mine. As a Philsdelphia native I "got him, and his humor." He made people smile, laugh and forget their sadness for a time.
What more can you ask? What a gift and legacy! Not easily accomplished by most! Rest in peace.

when i was growing up in the 70,s i loved the tonights show and david brenner was a frequent guess,i just thought he was so funny and what made him different was he never cursed during his skit.eventhough i obviously didnt know him he seemed like such a cool and nice person.

Brenner was a great friend to The Asbury Park Press and I had the privilege of interviewing him on two occasions. Now let me tell you, that guy could talk at length (and be funny) about anything I threw at him. I asked for a pigeon story and he gave me TWO pigeon stories.
After a 2006 interview, his publicist shared a bunch of glowing compliments he wrote about me. I was truly touched by that huge act of generosity.
Funny man. Nice guy. He'll be missed.

David Brenner was a wonderful person, whom I worked along side and become friends with during his two years that he had a talk show on Westwood One Radio, Networks. This part of his career I notice is never mentioned, not sure why. I will miss is talent and friendship. David was a classic act which is demonstrated in his dealing with his impending death.

To the Brenner Family,
Hold on to your memories. I knew David for a short time doing some travel for him. And Every time I would get an email I would just be laughing at my desk. Everyone would ask what are you laughing at and I would tell them David just emailed me. Even in just an email he was funny. He would tell a story. I enjoyed everyone of those emails and couldn't wait for the next one. The world will not be the same.

One time, I was in Fort Lauderdale, FL in a restaurant "Shooters" and I spotted David sitting at a table with his parents and family (It appeared to be), so I was on my way out holding my child and I stopped not too close to the table and said "Mr. Brenner, I just love you and thank you", he smiled and graciously thanked me. What a nice man. God bless you and your family and make them laugh up there!

Back in the early to mid 80's I met David Brenner in person at the hotel Casino I was working at. I had asked him for an autograph. He asked me for my address and told me he would send it. A few weeks went by and I thought he was busy. But it wasn't long before I received an autographed 8x10 glossy in the mail that I have this very day! I will never forget his kindness and generosity. He was a one of a kind comedian, professional in everyway. God Bless you David you will be sorely missed by all who loved you. Sincerest condolences to the family.

I WON'T SAY HOW OLD I AM, THOSE THAT KNOW ME KNOW, BUT I WAS TERRIBLE SADDENED TO READ AND HEAR OF DAVID BRENNER'S PASSING. HE WAS A FUNNY COMEDIAN WHO THOUROUGHLY ENTERTAINED ME. I DID SEE HIM ON HOLLYWOOD SQUARES. HE ALWAYS HAD A QUICK WIT AND A CUTE REMARK, AND WAS A GOOD OBSERVER OF HUMAN NATURE. IT IS HARD TO MAKE A LIVING AS A COMEDIAN, OR EVEN A COMEDIC OBSERVER, BUT DAVID SEEMED TO MANAGE TO DO IT WITH GREAT SKILL. BET HE IS CRACKING EVERYBODY UP IN HEAVEN, TOO! A GENUINE FUNNY GUY WHO WILL BE TRULY MISSED, AND I HOPE, NEVER FORGOTTEN. I AM GOING TO MISS YOU, DAVID, YOU WERE ONE OF THE BEST!

My maiden name is Brenner and I was always told a family story that David Brenner's great-grandfather and my great-grandfather were brothers. The story was that his great-grandfather made his way to a farm in Indiana and told the homeowners that he was homeless. They put him out back in a shed, fixed it up for him and fed and clothed him. Unknown to them he wrote letters back home that he was being held hostage and eventually his son and grandson showed up to rescue him. After some tense words with the homeowners the truth came out and it was determined that great-grandpa had a touch of dementia. Well, at least that is how the story was handed down to me. I always wanted to get in touch with David and ask him if he remembered any of it.

My sympathy to David's family. To all his fans in which there were so many (I myself included!) if you should hear loud noises coming from the sky it will most likely be the angels falling from the clouds in laughter at one of David's comedy routines! When I would catch his performance on TV I was always saddened when it was over as I wanted more. He knew how to perform and keep the audiences captivated and entertained and without vulgar language or obscene gestures. He was a class act and a real gentleman. You may be gone David, but your comedy lives on in our hearts. Philly has lost one of its "best entertainers"!

To family and friends of David Brenner:
It's so sad. But he spent most of his life making people laugh so, enough of that! My mother adored him. She loved when he hosted The Tonight Show. I remember sneaking downstairs to watch it--on school nights. Mom let me stay. A few years ago I told my girlfriend about that. So, when we were in Vegas, we just had to see him. We sat right down front. We laughed the entire time he was on stage. He noticed and actually spoke to us during the gig. Pausing in front of us, leaning, he said: "You two are good laughers. I'm staying right here." He essentially read things from the newspaper then commented on them like only he could. Engaging, funny, observant, connective. He was wonderful and we'll never forget him. Thanks David.

I adored my cousin David so much...he was more like an older brother...I also loved the stage; although never got there... David and I did perform together at a Passover Seder many years ago at uncle Nissan Brenner's home in Chestnut Hill, Pa. our duet of "you have to give a little" (song along with a soft shoe) went over very well; standing ovation and all!! (you must realize the audience were our relatives):)
Many of David's stories, as you may know came from actual screw-ups! I also recall following his performances; and being a frustrated actress, my buttons would burst with pride when I was escorted backstage; after all I am his cousin!! And I was not shy; so that statement was used very often!....May David continue making people laugh from above...To all of the family you have my deepest sympathy...David rest well, SHALOM...Love you, Tatum
