David Canary, an actor who was known best for playing the Ponderosa's foreman on TV's "Bonanza," has died. He was 77.

Canary, who also played roles on the prime-time serial "Peyton Place," died Nov. 16 at his home in Wilton, Connecticut. He died of natural causes, according to The Associated Press.

Canary was born Aug. 25, 1938, in Elwood, Indiana, but grew up in Massillon, Ohio. He earned a football scholarship to the University of Cincinnati, where he developed a passion for performing on the stage. Canary trained as a singer at the school and graduated with a degree in music.

Although the Denver Broncos offered Canary a chance to play professional football, he chose instead to pursue an acting career in New York, New York.

He served two years in the U.S. Army during the early 1960s. After his honorable discharge, Canary moved to Los Angeles, California, to advance his acting career.

Although Canary had a semi-regular role as Russ Gehring on "Peyton Place," he came to international prominence in 1967 on the Western TV series "Bonanza." Also that year, he appeared in the Western film "Hombre" that starred Paul Newman and Richard Boone.

Canary had a guest-star role on "Gunsmoke," in a two-part episode titled "Nitro." He also played a mobster alongside Jason Robards in the film "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre."

In late 1983, he joined the cast of "All My Children" playing the cunning Adam Chandler. In 1984, he also played Adam's meek twin brother, Stuart. He left the series in early 2010.

Canary is survived by his wife, actress Maureen Maloney, and their children, son Chris and daughter Kate.
