I was great friends with David in grades 3 through 6, and then my family moved. Saw him sporadically from then on, until the last time I at OSU in the physics building. Thanks for catching crawdads with me in Fanno Creek, sledding at Council Crest, climbing on the abandoned blue steam-shovel in the mudflats by Albertsons, and all sorts of shenanigans. Best to your sister, mom, and dad.

Our deepest sympathy to David's family, many friends and co-workers. This is a terrible loss to the world.
We feel so honored to have known and been friends with someone this dedicated to helping people the world over who were suffering and needed us to know their stories through his insightful photographs.
We are so thankful to have had David as a friend and mentor to our son Spence. His life was ever changed after being befriended by David.
Thank you, David, for all your contributions to the world. Especially, thank you for making us laugh at your silly antics, for being our friend, for never forgetting us, for loving us for who we are, for enjoying what we had to offer you in your short reprieves from the many wars you covered and for just being DAVID! you will always be with us in spirit. We love you and hold you in our hearts forever. Godspeed.

Since we were kids Dave had a sense of adventure. When he told me at 16 he wanted to be a photojournalist, I knew he would be a darn good one! I will continue to think of him on his birthday, and I will take the lessons I learned from him, with me; and one day I will see him again and give him those valuable lesson back. Like a flash he shined his brilliance on everyone; and now we are all in the dark. Dave man, you are profoundly missed.
