I remember the first time I saw Dean Potter in Yosemite. I was sitting next to Chongo, a big wall climber and a renowned author, when Dean Potter walked into the food court like a lion with a pride of lions right behind him. Right away his presence impressed me because he conveyed upon me a silent reverence of command. Immediately I asked Chongo, "Who is this guy?" He said to me with awe, "Man, that's Dean Potter, the baddest climber in Yosemite." Cedar, an affable as well as a capable climber himself, who was also sitting next to me, concurred in Chongo's opinion of Dean Potter. And although I am not a climber, I always hung out with all the climbers in the food court. I still remember right now always playing chess with Tucker (another well known climber in Yosemite). At any rate, my condolences to Dean Potter's family.

My condolences to the Potter family. I can still remember teaching Dean at GHS. He'd slouch at his desk, giving me a sly grin when I asked him a question about his homework or something. Intelligent, well-liked, I am truly saddened to learn of his passing. He is a great kid who became an even greater man. I had no idea just how influential and well known he became as a climber and base jumper. Time helps the grieving but the void will forever remain. Dean lived his life fully and on his terms; he leaves good memories to cling to. God bless you Dean and your family.

Dean you made me believe that dreams can be moulded into reality if we have the courage.
You lived your life with compassion and with such energy that many of us can only dream of.
You will be remembered every moment around the world for the vision you bestowed upon us.
See you on the other side brother!!

His life was a blessing, and he knew it. Living every day fully and with conviction and heart. Dean inspired generations and generations to come to chase their dreams, to be free and what it means to be happy. Thank you Dean for living just the way you did, and for being the guiding light in the adventure sport world we will never forget you and know the Black Raven will forever fly in Yosemite.

The first time we have ever heard about Dean is almost two decades ago and since then we followed was he was doing more or less intensivly. We remember him climbing in Yosemite, slacklining and base jumping any mountains around the world. You might think that what he was doing is irresponsible and unjustifiable to himself and the people around him, especially for his children. On the other hand sometimes when I was down I looked at some of his movies in YouTube and it always was a great Inspiration and gave me back energy and believe in life. Hope you fly with the birds ...

I am still in a state of disbelief. Dean was like a superhero to me. He was the reason I started climbing. I wanted to be him - wild, introspective, bold. I was always touched by his love for his dog and nature. As I climbed today I thought about Dean and I knew I had to keep pushing; we have to believe and live fiercely. RIP - fly free

To the potter family, as you strive to accept what has occurred in your life. Please allow the hope of life that is held out to all who fall asleepI. It says "I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne, and scrolls were opened. But another scroll was opened; it is the scroll of life. The dead were judged out of those things written in the scrolls according to their deeds. And the sea gave up the dead in it, and death and the Grave gave up the dead in them, and they were judged individually according to their deeds.

I met Dean on Mother's Day, 2009. My husband and I had been going to Yosemite since 1997 every chance we got, about once every 2 years. We dreamed of moving to the area and still do. There was snow on the ground that day but we hiked to the fissures crossing an ice bridge. That was plenty of excitement for me. When we got there the first thing I saw was an orange line strung between 2 fissures and I thought, Wow- someone's walking the line. There was a man on his cell phone and we went to the edge where there was a rock bench seat and had lunch with some very large crows. After, I walked off to get pictures of El Cap and tried to capture the beauty surrounding us. When I walked back toward my husband I saw he was talking to the man. I had become a joke between us because he always talks to everyone, then tells me- Man that guy can talk, when really it is his distinction. I avoided them for a while, but as I walked up my husband said- this is my wife. The man said hello and I said Hi- you're Dean, right? I recognized him from the cover of Outside mag. His article was of great interest to me because it talked about Yosemite, but I found the things he was able to do incredible. He glanced down and kind of shyly said, yeah. We talked about the thing we all loved, Yosemite. He encouraged us to make our move. I told him I really would love to show my parents Yosemite, and he said- you should do it. He struck me as an old soul, wise and kind. My husband learned of his death Monday morning via internet. He yelled out Oh, no! I went over to read the headline and had the same reaction. As I got ready for work my thoughts were, I don't need to know what after life is like, I just need a sign, is it good or bad? I kid you not, as I started out my drive, there was a partial rainbow in the sky for no apparent reason. It had not rained nor was going to rain, but there it was. I laughed out loud and thought, Ok Dean, I am glad for you.
Fly on gentle spirit.

We send our sincere condolences to the Dean family, friends and many admirers. On television we saw and heard of your tragic, great loss. May you find comfort in your years of fond memories and the words of the greatest man who ever lived - Lazarus, come out! 44 The man who had been dead came out with his feet and hands bound with wrappings, and his face was wrapped with a cloth. Jesus said to them: Free him and let him go.
