Dennis Gomes Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 24, 2012.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) - Dennis Gomes, co-owner of Resorts Casino Hotel in Atlantic City and a former mob-busting prosecutor in Las Vegas, whose exploits were chronicled in the movie "Casino," has died, a casino spokeswoman said Friday. He was 68.

Resorts spokeswoman Courtney Birmingham said Gomes died overnight Thursday of undetermined causes. He died at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, a hospital spokeswoman said, declining to release further details.

Gomes and New York real estate magnate Morris Bailey bought Resorts in August 2010 and saved the struggling casino from shutting down.

Gomes had a long career in the casino industry, with management jobs at the Tropicana Casino and Resort (where he famously turned a tic-tac-toe-playing chicken into a top draw), Trump Taj Mahal Casino and Resort, the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, and Hilton Nevada's properties. And his tenure as Nevada's top casino corruption investigator was chronicled in the 1995 Martin Scorsese film "Casino."

"Dennis was a great friend and a great executive," said Donald Trump. "He was my top executive at the Taj Mahal and he did a tremendous job. Everybody liked him and respected him. This is just so shocking."

His death rocked the Atlantic City casino industry, where Gomes was beloved by fellow executives and industry bigs. His co-owner, New York real estate magnate Morris Bailey, pledged to continue carrying out Gomes policies at the casino.

"Dennis was a man of integrity who embraced all who knew him with respect and love," Bailey said. "We have not only lost a business partner who was an industry leader and visionary; we have lost a friend and family member. We are committed to continuing Dennis' vision for Resorts and Atlantic City, and our success will be a tribute to his memory."

Daniel Heneghan, a spokesman for the New Jersey Casino Control Commission, who knew Gomes for decades, said he alw ays wanted to own a casino in Atlantic City.

"Dennis may have gotten his start in the industry in Nevada, but his heart clearly was in Atlantic City," Heneghan said. "My heart breaks for his family and all the people at Resorts."

Employees at Resorts were stunned by the death as well.

"Dennis was truly the most giving, gracious and kind-hearted human being," said Nicholas Moles, vice president and general counsel of the casino. "Everyone who knew him loved him. We are all blessed to have worked with him, to call him our friend and to be part of his family. We are devastated by this loss and our prayers are with the Gomes family during this time. We are committed to continuing Dennis' vision for Resorts."

Gomes was famous for bizarre schemes to attract free publicity to his casinos. While running Atlantic City's Tropicana, he pitted a live chicken against customers in games of tic-tac-toe. To promote a casino in Indiana, he hired a Barack Obama look-an d-sound-alike to urge gamblers to bring their "change" to the gambling hall. That earned him a rebuke from the White House, and oodles of free publicity.

It was no different at Resorts. Gomes erected a billboard showing a dancer's naked rear end to promote a stage show, leading to a court battle with the state's transit agency, which owned the billboard location. He staged an adults-only big top show called "The Naked Circus," and opened the first gay nightclub in an Atlantic City casino.

After HBO's "Boardwalk Empire," the TV series based on Prohibition-era Atlantic City's political and vice rackets, started taking audiences by storm, Gomes decided to re-brand the casino - whose hotel is an authentic 1920s edifice - to cash in on interest in the show and Atlantic City's shady past. A key part of the new image was new skimpy flapper costumes that female beverage servers were made to wear.

Servers had to audition and be photographed in their new outfits; thos e deemed insufficiently sexy were fired. That decision, along with the pay cuts, spurred three separate lawsuits, one of which is being pushed by celebrity lawyer Gloria Allred, alleging age and sex discrimination. The suits are pending. Gomes, who lived in Margate, just south of Atlantic City, was a martial arts expert who was diligent about exercise.

"No one ever worked out harder than Dennis Gomes," Trump recalled. "He'd do it two, three hours a day. He was always extremely physically fit."

He wore a back brace recently after breaking his back trying to catch a falling marble table top.

Gomes worked tirelessly to try to turn Resorts around. He and Bailey bought the casino for $31.5 million, a fraction of the $140 million former owners Colony Capital LLC paid for it in 2001. Colony walked away from the casino in 2009 after losing money for years and failing to find a buyer.

In an interview in December 2011, Gomes told The Associated Press that Resorts was still losing money, although its cash-paying businesses - food and beverage sales, and hotel rooms - was up 40 percent over its level from a year ago.

For all of 2010, Resorts lost $18.5 million.

My aunt (Traci Abraham) worked with Mr. Gomes back in the late 70's at the Las Vegas Hilton. He was a gracious, kind man to work for and when I met him as a young girl He complimented my aunt (a slot and keno auditor supervisor)making her feel so proud to work with him. There are lesson to be learned from a man who appreciated people for their work. RIP Mr. Gomes.

For five years, I saw Dennis practically each and everyday at the Trop. We ran for an entire month every December an event to help locals who are afflicted with M.S., Alzheimer's and Parkinson. I rarely saw him in suits. Each day he would come by with a big smile in his
Karate outfit, He often stopped to say hello and always had a big smile for us. He was dedicated to this exercise, and it a picture I will keep in my heart forever.
Despite this, he was a kind and gentle man who used whatever god gave him and he
succeeded.

Dennis Gomes, was a kind and gentle man, a man who cared about the people he met, the people who took the time to stay at his hotel, he was a gracious man and a giving man who really cared for people. I had the pleasure of meeting him at Resorts, and he spoke to you as if he knew you all your life, he treated people like friends not just costumers. This man was an innovator and just a brilliant human being, God Bless you Dennis Gomes, and may you rest in peace!!!

I have many wonderful memories of Dennis but the one that is perphaps the most profound was during the Black Belt Karate Challenge. I had given up on myself in tears and felt I could not do one more single push up. Dennis came over to me and said just the right words of encouragement. His strong spirit helped me to find the spirit within myself to continue. It was life changing. His encouragement inspired countless others in similar ways. What a legacy he has left behind in touching the lives of so many people in such important ways. He was the most powerful leader I have known. Thank you Dennis.

What a shock to learn of Dennis' passing and I am so sorry for his family's loss. Dennis always had such passion and energy. We were contemporaries for the Howard Hughes gaming group, he at the Frontier and I at the Sands. Few remember that, at the Frontier and at the direction of Phil Hannifin, he led the development of the table games complimentary computations still used today by the entire industry. He will be missed!

Dennis loved to tell this story about me: Early in my career, when I was responsible for Direct Mail at the Trump Taj Mahal, let's just say there was a little mix-up with the mail files and the wrong direct mail offers went out to about 100,000 people. We caught the error too late and had to spend a few thousand dollars to send out a correction. The mail was late and we definitely had a dip in slot revenue for a few days. At the time I think we thought it cost us maybe $100,000 in lost revenue. Dennis called me into his office. I thought for sure that I was going to be fired. I went in there accepting responsibility. Much to my surprise, he began the meeting by saying what a great job I was doing! I told him that I thought he was going to fire me. He said, "I can't fire you, I just spent a half of a million dollars on your education!". That was 20 years ago and I've heard him tell the story 2 dozen times, and every time the cost of my error went up. The last time he told the story I think it cost the Taj $5,000,000!
I always appreciated the fact that Dennis gave me a shot. He was one of a kind and I will definitely miss him.

Dear Aaron and Gomes family. Please know God is with you and your family always. I am so sorry for this tragic, unexpected loss. I have had the honor and pleasure of knowing Aaron since 2005 at The Mirage. I am sure Dennis, god rest his soul, could not be more proud of him and all his family. Aaron talked so much about his father, I feel like I knew him as well. He had the most loving father a person could ask for like I did. Anytime I have mentioned the name Dennis Gomes to anyone, honor, integrity, honesty, caring, and respect are what I hear ALWAYS! True visionaries of gaming, and of this world are few and far between. While he will be missed, he most certainly will never be forgotten.

Larry brought Dennis to my Mom's house in LV for Thanksgiving many years ago.
Dennis loved my Mom's pumpkin pie, and talked about how good it was. He knew me only a little through Charleen, but he liked me. I had a black belt at a young age. Dennis had his also, or was near receiving it. We shared this in common. He told Charleen he respected me for my achievement, and I respected him for his. I know how intimate Charleen and Larry are with the Gomes family. And Jamie and Jordan, and I feel for all of you. The loss of Dennis Gomes hurts everyone, even those who knew him through others. He touched my life and many in a positive way. He was a friend to all.

I didn't know Dennis Gomes or his family personally, but we did communicate with each other a few times and he was always upbeat and inspiring. Atlantic City will have to look far and wide and still probably never find another champion like him. I suspect we would not have come this far without his guidance and I fear that we will not go as far without his leadership. So take heed Atlantic City CEOs and Casino Management teams, look no further than the inspiration of the late great Dennis Gomes and do the right thing for your company, for your casino and for Atlantic City. Rest in Peace Mr Gomes. You made the world a better place.

To the family of Dennis Gomes. I met Dennis in the elevator with Larry Clark as he became the President and Ceo of Trump Taj Mahal in 1991, Larry introduced me as the best Casino Host in Atlantic City and introduced Dennis as the Best Ceo ,Coo , President that I would ever work for. Larry was right, but after a couple years I moved on to a better position. I hadn't seen Dennis in many years since but saw him at the Gaming convention at the Venetian in October. He acted like(usual Dennis style you were the most important person he had seen in many years and VERY proudly introduced me to his son Aaron. But he was the same old Dennis he said feel my mustle can you believe I am almost 70. I had a wonderful day with Dennis that day and hope his loved ones know how he impacted my life. God Bless his Grace And Memorey. Pat

Dennis Gomes is one in a billion and one of a kind! There will never be another like him. We are very fortunate to have met a great guy like Dennis. He has blessed my life , my family and many others. Thankful to him and his family for all they've done for us. He was brilliant, an innovator, a man of integrity and he was fearless. He was a great man w the biggest heart ! I will miss him so much and he will be truly missed by many who admires and loved him. He has inspired me to be the best person I can be. I had my darkest hour when my husband died, Dennis and Barbara stepped forward to show their care and concern. Their sincerity, care and concern for others is what kept the light shining around them. It was brilliance. They met at the Tropicana where our lives were connected through the Folies Bergere Family.

As busy as he was, when Dennis stopped to speak to you, it was YOU he was talking to. He made each and every individual feel as though they were the center of his world. Of course, we all knew that was not true. Barbara, Doug, Mary, Danielle, Aaron and Gabriele were the center of his world. When he interacted with his family each and every one of them were THE most important. He loved his family, spoke of them all the time and they were the reason for his heartfelt smile.

Dennis respected and appreciated those who would stand their ground, IF they had foundation and could back-up what they were saying. He had an uncanny ability to get people to be creative and WANT to think outside the box. He always believed that life could get better. If you kept looking forward pretty soon you would be moving forward.

Dennis would not want us to mourn his passing. He would want us to remember him. Remember all of the things we learned because he believed in us. Dennis was the mirror that made us see the good in ourselves and inspire us to always go one more step beyond what we thought we could do.

Barbara, I send you my love. Your family has been forever changed. Dennis would not have chosen to leave. He knew that each and every day he was alive, he devoted himself to his family.

Instead of Dennis walking by your side, now he is forever in your heart. You are not alone.

Thank you for sharing Dennis with all of us. He has inspired each of us to live the best life we can.

To the family of Dennis Gomes: all this week since hearing of Dennis' passing, I have had the opportunity to reflect on the man I knew during my time at the Atlantic City Trop. Dennis was all that everyone who has written on his behalf has claimed him to be; there isn't much more for me to add or to say differently except that Dennis possessed that rare talent that made you feel like you were the only person in a roomful of people when he had your attention. His vitality, creativity, and charisma were of the highest degree and were a large part of what made him so different, so admired, and so successful in his endeavors. He was an inspiration to so many, and to this day inspires me still. I pray for his peace and my wish to his family is that their memories of him, the promise of their faith, and the comfort and strength they will receive from those who love and care for them will sustain them in the days ahead.

I have never met Mr. Gomes , but inspite of that , I feel a kinship to him , because we have both lost a child , when they were at a age where we thought we could relax , we felt that there was no way that the child we lost , would leave before we would . I further felt a kinship , because as I read what kind of man he was , I felt like we were cut from the same cloth . These things have made me feel a spiritual connection to him , which is why I felt compelled to make my sentiments known and to pass on my condolences to his family , whom I'm sure are trying desparately to understand and deal with the loss of a very special man . May He Rest In Peace !!
