Gary Carter Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 16, 2012.
NEW YORK (AP) — Gary Carter was nicknamed "Kid" for good reason.

His smile, bubbly personality and eagerness to excel on a ballfield made him a joy to watch at the plate and behind it.

Even his Hall of Fame bronze plaque at Cooperstown shows him with a toothy grin — the Kid forever.

The star catcher, whose single for the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, died Thursday. He was 57.

Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last May, two weeks after finishing his second season as coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University. Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Carter died at a hospice in the West Palm Beach, Fla., area.

"I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 p.m.," Carter's daughter Kimmy Bloemers wrote on the family website. "This is the most difficult thing I have ever had to write in my entire life but I wanted you all to know."

Carter was an 11-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. His bottom-of-the-10th single in Game 6 of the 1986 Series helped the Mets mount a charge against the Boston Red Sox and eventually beat them.

With curly, blond locks flaring out from beneath his helmet, and a rigid, upright batting stance, Carter was immediately recognizable.

"His nickname 'The Kid' captured how Gary approached life," the Mets said in a statement. "He did everything with enthusiasm and with gusto on and off the field. His smile was infectious. ... He was a Hall of Famer in everything he did."

Carter played nearly two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He led the Expos to their only playoff berth and was the first player enshrined in Cooperstown wearing an Expos cap.

"Gary was one of the happiest guys in the world every day," Mets teammate Mookie Wilson once said.

Carter was known as much for his effervescent personality as his talents. He earned his nickname as an eager teen in his first major league camp and the label stuck for the rest of his career, and beyond.

"An exuberant on-field general with a signature smile who was known for clutch hitting and rock-solid defense over 19 seasons," reads his Hall plaque.

He was especially pumped during the biggest moment of his career. The powerful Mets were down to their last chance in the '86 Series when Carter stepped up with two outs. No one was on base and New York was trailing Boston 5-3 in the bottom of the 10th inning in Game 6.

Carter said he had just one thought in mind: "I wasn't going to make the last out of the World Series."

True to his word, he delivered a clean single to left field off Red Sox reliever Calvin Schiraldi. Kevin Mitchell followed with a single and when Ray Knight also singled, Carter scampered home from second base.

As Carter crossed the plate, he clapped his hands, pointed at Wilson on deck and clapped again. Moments later, Bill Buckner's error scored Knight for an amazing 6-5 win. Carter rushed from the dugout to join the celebration at home plate, catcher's gear already on.

Overshadowed by the rally was the fact that Carter had tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. Then in Game 7, Carter drove in the tying run in the sixth inning, and the Mets went on to win their most recent championship.

Carter homered twice over the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Game 4 and totaled nine RBIs in that Series. Since then, only two players have gotten more in a World Series (Mike Napoli for Texas in 2011 and Sandy Alomar Jr. for Cleveland in 1997 each had 10).

Overall, Carter hit .262 with 324 home runs and 1,225 RBIs with the Expos, Mets, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He set the major league record for putouts by a catcher, a testament to his durability despite nine knee operations.

"Driven by a remarkable enthusiasm for the game, Gary Carter became one of the elite catchers of all-time," Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement. "Like all baseball fans, I will always remember his leadership for the '86 Mets and his pivotal role in one of the greatest World Series ever played."

Carter twice was the MVP of the All-Star game. He won the award in 1981 by homering twice in baseball's first game after a players' strike that lasted two months. He remains the lone player to have a two-homer performance in an All-Star game and a World Series game.

He set the NL record for games caught, but spent his first full season in the majors primarily as Montreal's right fielder. His first All-Star appearance came that year, in 1975, as a defensive replacement in left field for Pete Rose.

Carter was recognized, too, for his contributions off the field when he was honored with the Roberto Clemente Award.

He hit his first major league homer in September 1974 off future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton as a 20-year-old rookie — Carter homered 11 times against the ace lefty, his top victim.

Carter spent his first 11 years with the Expos and was part of a solid core that put them into the 1981 playoffs. They beat the defending champion Philadelphia Phillies in a new first round created after the strike split the season into two halves, but lost to the Dodgers in the NL championship series.

A perennial fan favorite, Carter returned to Montreal in 1992 for one final season. His last swing was a memorable one — he hit an RBI double in the seventh inning at Olympic Stadium, left for a pinch-runner to a huge ovation from the home crowd and walked away after that 1-0 win over the Cubs.

Carter was elected to the Hall in 2003 on his sixth try. He had joked that he wanted his Cooperstown cap to be a half-and-halfer, split between the Expos and Mets. The Hall makes the ultimate call on the logo.

Carter pleased Canadian fans by delivering part of his induction speech in French. Born and raised in California, he took a Berlitz course to help him learn the language after the Expos drafted him.

The Expos traded him to the Mets after the 1984 season for Hubie Brooks, Mike Fitzgerald, Herm Winningham and Floyd Youmans. Carter turned out to be one of the last missing pieces on a New York team that already had the likes of Darryl Strawberry, Dwight Gooden and Keith Hernandez.

He made an immediate impression — it just took a little extra to get it right in his Mets debut in 1985. In the season opener at Shea Stadium, Carter took strike three, had a passed ball that gave St. Louis a run and watched Cardinals pitcher Joaquin Andujar steal a base against him.

But in the bottom of the 10th inning, Carter hit a home run that won the game and drew a standing ovation plus chants of "Gary! Gary! Gary!"

"What a way to start," Carter said with a grin afterward. "Hit by a pitch, strike out looking, a stolen base, a passed ball and then the home run."

"There's not enough words to describe what it feels like," he said. "I'll certainly remember this the rest of my life."

It wasn't the only time he bounced back from a rugged start. Slumping badly in the 1986 NL championship series, Carter hit a winning single in the bottom of the 12th to beat Houston in Game 5, putting the Mets within one win of the World Series.

A two-sport athlete as a boy, Carter won the 7-year-old national division of the NFL's first Punt, Pass & Kick skills competition in 1961. He was a pitcher and shortstop in Little League and switched to catching in high school after a scout suggested it was the fastest path to the big leagues, turning down a chance to play football at UCLA.

Carter stayed in baseball after his playing days ended. He became a broadcaster for the Florida Marlins, coached and managed for the Mets in the minors, managed two independent minor league teams and coached in college.

The only hint of negative publicity Carter drew came a few years ago when he appeared to be campaigning for the Mets' managing job though it was already filled.

Carter, however, always had a winning touch. At the ballpark or away, he greeted fans with a hearty handshake — many marveling at how his big right hand had swallowed up theirs.

After his diagnosis, the Mets began playing a highlight reel of Carter's accomplishments on the video board during games at Citi Field and posted this message: "Our thoughts are with you Gary. From your millions of fans and the New York Mets."

At the Hall ceremonies in July, new inductee Bert Blyleven mentioned Carter. "Gary, keep battling the way that you always have," he said to the crowd.

Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt said Carter continued to inspire him in later years. In a 2006 column for The Associated Press, the former Phillies star recalled the pure elation that enveloped Carter when he was voted into Cooperstown.

"No player ever appreciated that call to the extent he did. The joy it brought him, his family, and friends, especially me, was so real and pleasantly genuine, I ate it up and still do," Schmidt wrote.

"He does not take it for granted. He will wear his emotion, from this election, on his sleeve the rest of his life," he wrote. "His induction actually made me appreciate mine all the more."

Recently enjoyed 'Kid, A Gary Carter Story' on SNY. Though he is never forgotten, the film reinforced what a great player and wonderful person he was. I am still very sad that he was taken so soon, but try to remember that everything is by God's plan. Love and appreciation to the Carter family for sharing your story.

After posting my statement to the guestbook, I read all the postings from fans, friends, associates, etc. and saw that my experience with Gary was the same throughout Canada and the United States. Whether it was a brief meeting or an ongoing relationship or in my case a couple of hours at a corporate dinner function. Gary was genuine to all that he came upon. After my post, I went and found my pic with Gary and scanned it to post in the guest book. I feel very fortunate to have had a fraction of of Gary and be in the company of that infectious spirit.

To the Carter Family,

I first met Gary at the 2005 ADT/NBC Golf Skills Championship Banquet. Gary was there along with many other sports/entertainment celebrities that would play the next day in The ADT pro/am Celebrity Tournament. I had not realized that Gary was sitting directly behind me until he stood and was recognized. Out of the roughly 24 celebrities there it was Gary that I wanted to meet and have a picture taken with. I don't remember if I knew of Gary before the 86' World Series or not, because I was to be emblazoned with Gary's playing personality from that time on. Whether it was his batting performance, his amazing fielding, or probably his playing spirit that would not only effect his teammates, the New York fans and the rest of baseball aficionados throughout the country. The 6th game of the 1986 World Series Game is one of the most talked games in the modern era. Gary would be the catalyst for that game with his two out rally single and how he willed his teammates one by one to move him home.

I very sheepishly walked over to Gary and told him that he was my most favorite player of all time and could I get a picture with him. To my surprise Gary took my camera and gave it to one of his table mates and through his arm around me. I knew then that that pic would be a favorite. In 2006 at the same ADT event I could not imagine my fortune when Gary would be my tables 'celebrity' for the evenings dinner. Normally I would have to share conversation with the tables celebrity with 9 other people at the 10 person roundtop. But that night several ADT Dealers assigned to sit with us were weathered in a early November snow storm. With just four people sitting at our table and I don't believe that the couple sitting with us were baseball fans, I would have virtually the next two hours side by side with Gary. Gary had remembered me from the year before and treated me like one of his former teammates. Having played local amateur ball for thirty years, Gary by the end of the night had me feeling like I truly was one of his former peers and teammate. Living in the Brevard County area, Gary stated that his PSL Mets played in Brevard in the FSL. Gary told me that if I came to a game he would sign the pic taken in 2005 and have a quick beverage after the game. Unfortunately, Gary would not be back to manage the PSL Mets. Gary had given me the address for his foundation in case we didn't hook up in Melbourne. I had hopes that would see Gary at future ADT events but with the slowdown of the economy ADT would cut back on its dealer invites. I never did send that picture in for Gary to sign and not happy with myself for procrastinating.

My sincerest condolences to your family, may he rest in peace until the day all the dead are resurrected.

I at one time lived just a few houses away from the Carters on Huntly Dr. My family was new to the area and the Carter family were one of the fitst to make us feel welcome. Especially at the time my teenage son. It amazed him that a famous athlete actually knew his name. Gary would play ball with the kids on the street shouting ''watch out for the knees". He was just fun!! My heart aches for his family. He will be missed.

Dear Mrs. Carter and the Carter Family,

We had the honor of being able to attend the beautiful Memorial Service at the Christ Fellowship Church in Palm Beach Gardens for Gary Carter on Friday, February 24, 2012.

It was a most memorable night and one that we will always cherish since we both loved and admired Gary Carter as the New York Mets catcher and as a remarkable man. He truly was a very gentle man and a very wonderful gentleman.

It was so very inspirational for us to attend this very special tribute to honor him and his life. It was so wonderful for us to hear all the guest speakers tell so lovingly and so beautifully about the very kind and special person that he was both on and off the baseball field.

We are both New York Mets fans and Gary was one of our most favorite players on the Mets and in all of baseball. We were so very happy when he was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame.

Hal worked for the Commissioner of Baseball when Gary was with the Mets and enjoyed working with him on many promotions for Major League Baseball. He always found Gary him to be most cooperative, very enthusiastic and a genuinely nice person to promote the game of baseball.

While it is so sad that he has died so young, we must thank God that he has lived and touched the lives of so many people with his marvelous and amazing talent as a ballplayer and as a very loving, kind and gracious human being.

Gary will live in our hearts as well as in the hearts of the thousands of people from around the world whose lives he touched with his goodness.

We send God's blessings to all the Carter Family and we will continue to keep you all in our thoughts and prayers as you go through this most difficult time. To know Gary was to love him – and we truly did.

Sincerely,

Gary graced us in Houston in 1994 as our guest to play in the Sunshine Kids golf tournament to raise funds for the kids. After our first round we decided to go to dinner at a local restaurant and were there for about 2 hours during which time Gary never stopped signing autographs for kids who came up to him beaming with smiles of meeting this great person. He never finished his dinner and I apologized for that. But Gary said - "oh I was fed ok - just watching those kids smiles was nourishment enough for me." he is truly a man of class, a talented athlete and a caring person for all those around him. He will be missed.

Spring training in Florida is where I met, talked and took many GORGEOUS photos up close of Gary. He was the most pleasant, accommodating, friendliest and caring ballplayer I've ever met! He would stay and talk and sign for as long as someone wanted him to. He NEVER ignored anyone or rushed off with excuses, like so many did. Once in port st lucie after the workouts, I went up to get a soda. The concession lady asked me if Gary was still here. I said "of course". she told me she knew a kid who was in the hospital with leukemia and is a die-hard fan. Would I ask him to come up to her to give her an autograph and take a picture. I did. Gary was Gary. He came right up to the edge of the field, I explained and he said "OF COURSE" and asked where she was. I actually took him up to her. She was thrilled and I felt like I was one of his friends walking through the stadium with him!!
When I met my husband, David, he had had a kidney transplant in 1985 in Brooklyn. He loved Gary even though he was a die-hard Mets fan! Well, one of the nurses was a friend of Gary's and when the Expos were in town to play the Mets, she called him. HE ACTUALLY SHOWED UP AT THE HOSPITAL AROUND MIDNIGHT AFTER THE GAME TO VISIT DAVID!!! that is WHO GARY CARTER IS!!!!!!!!

I was at that game 6 in 1986, and believe me, i couldn't talk for 3 days!!!! WHAT A GAME! Thanks for that memory and so many more Gary!

We will ALWAYS love you and remember you! We wish peace and love to you and of course your family.

Garry Carter! Gerry Carter! Garry Carter!
The Kid whom we loved for all the years he gave us in Montreal. I was in Germany in the 80's listening to the Expose and I think it was the Cubs, at two in the morning from the US military base in Frankfort. I did love my team, sadness never helps, but those huge memories of Garry and the rest of the team will forever hold a warm and personal spot in my heart. To the family and close friends of The Kid, please accept my most heart felt condolences for yours' and our lose.

I met Mr Carter one time & saw him one other in my lifetime. I would like to share my story. Years ago I ran a candy store in the Gardens Mall. We sold bulk candy that you scooped forward into a holding cup, then you placed your bag under that cup & lifted the little door & your candy fell into your bag. Mr. Carter came in ( but I did not know at that time who he was )he raked his candy into the holding cup & opened the door & candy went all over the floor. I went to assist, told him how to do it & left to help another customer. Suddenly I heard candy hitting the floor again, I went over & said, Here you tell me what you want & I will get it for you. But I added, Because " You apparently can't catch anything ". He laughed, I laughed. We got his candy, he paid, stayed & spoke to me for a few minutes & left. That very night my son was looking at Baseball cards & I was telling him & my husband about the guy who spilled candy all over the floor twice today. When I looked at the card my son was holding, I couldn't believe it, it the man I had just told them about. My husband said, you didn't really tell THIS man he couldn't catch anything did you ? My husband couldn't believe what I had done. He then educated me on Gary Carter & how he was one of Baseball's all time Best catchers. Several weeks later my children & I were watching a local parade in Palm Beach Gardens & riding in that parade was Gary Carter, when he passed by he saw me, waved & called out, Hi Candy Lady. He had such a great sense of humor. I wonder if he ever told that story. My prayers go out to his friends & family. Even though I never saw him again, I will remember the funny, friendly man who visited my store that day...

For Gary, only God knows how well you played the game ...

All three of his children spoke quite lovingly of their Dad, someone you just had to appreciate as he was the same fine person out on the street as he was as a teammate and with his loving family, many friends and fans ...

He left this world far too soon although his name and his good works shall keep his name at the forefront and he shall be remembered fondly forever more by all those of us who knew him and met him over time ...

Thanks, Gary, for everything you did for all of us ... We shall remember.

My thoughts and prayers to the entire Carter family. Gary was a fantastic person as well as ball player and I will always remember his smile and love for the game. I wrote him in 1986 and feel honored to have received a picture of him and a team photo of the Mets. May he rest in peace and he will never be forgotten.

Gary was my favourite baseball player. I saw him a couple of times in Montreal as an Expo and as a Met. I saw him his final season in Montreal and will always remember him as a down to earth, respectful man and the heart of the Expos. I miss you soo much, I hope your at peace now.... The best #8

My friends & I met Gary Carter in July 1987 when the Mets played the Houston Astros in Houston. Mr. Carter was very gracious and friendly. Many athletes are very rude, even if they are approached with the utmost respect. I will remember the smile he had when we saw him, & his willingness to take the time & make some Mets fans from NJ feel like we were his friends. May Gary Rest in Peace, & may the Lord's presence keep his family strong through this difficult time.

My Son, who is 36 now, got me interested in watching the Mets when he was just a little boy. I recognized Gary's great catching ability the first time I saw him catch. I even bought a Cabbage Patch doll in a Mets uniform and named him Gary Carter. He was and always be my favorite baseball player. God bless Gary and his loving family. May he rest in peace. Amen Pat

I love me some Gary Carter. I went to Roger Dean Stadium to watch the Class A St. Lucie Mets play in 2006. Gary Carter was the Manager. That night I was sitting by third base line and gary came out to coach third base. I told Gary how much I love him and the way he play ball. He just gave me that big smile. I ask him if a foul ball should come his way to please give it to me. It was the eighth inning and was hoping for a foul ball, but as I look toward the dugout here came gary with a ball in is hand. I hurry up to put my glove on and he toss me the ball and said, "Meet me after the game by the dugout and I will sign it for you". I started to scream and thank him so much. After the game I went to the dugout and sure enough he was there and sign my ball and we took a picture. he made my night that I will never forget. I love me some Gary Carter. RIP God Bless you and your family. Sandy VanScoy Stuart

I went to a ball game at Roger Dean Stadium where Gary Carter and the Class A St. Lucie Mets were playing. I had seats right across third base line. To my surprise I saw Gary Carter running out of the dugout to coach third base. I was screaming I Love You Gary Carter and he just gave me this big smile. I ask him if the foul ball comes his way could he please let me have one. I waited almost the whole game and no balls came this way. In the eighth inning Gary Carter came running out of the dugout with a ball in his hand. I saw him with the ball and put my glove on to catch the ball. He threw it to me and said, "Meet me by the dugout after the game". I scream I Love You Gay Carter. I got the ball and a autograph and was screaming after the game I Love You Gary Carter. God Bless you and R.I.P. You will be missed. Sandy VanScoy Stuart, Florida
