My mother went to high school with Mr. Hickerson at Trezevant HS in Trezevant, TN in the early 50's. The Browns were always her favorite team due to her friendship with Gene. He will always hold a special place in our family's hearts.

Do not marvel at this because the hour is coming when all those in the memorial tombs will here his voice and come out those who did good things to a resurrection of life those who practiced vile things to a ressurrection of judgement. Our thoughts and prayers are with your family now. My Dad (retired major league pitcher Bob Cain) worked in the Browns ticket office after retiring from baseball and we would attend every Browns game (20 yd. line) cheering Gene and the Browns on to victory! Outstanding at his position...Hall of Fame was long overdue!! Wonderful memories last a lifetime....don't forget the great times! Fondly, Judy Cain Wilkinson

I am just a Cleveland Browns fan. I did not have the pleasure of knowing Gene pesonally but I never heard a disrepectful word uttered in regard to Gene. He was the consumate gentleman. He is the mold from which all pulling gaurds have been cast. I have many enduring memories of Gene clearing the way for Jim, Ernie and Leroy. May our prayers now clear the way (or at least hasten the way) for Gene through the gates of heaven.

This one is for Marty Sammon who was my classmate at Cathedral Latin
High School class of "50". Marty's Dad died at the Stadium while cheering the Browns on. Both Marty and his Dad are gone now but I'm sure they met Gene at the gate cheering him on. God Bless the three of ya. The Lord has good company today.

Dear Bob, Eileen and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you, now and in all the days to come.
I remember Gene on Friday nights at Hickerson's entertaining people with his football stories until wee hours of the morning. He was a wonderful, very generous man, and though Gene has been taken from you,
the memories will be with you forever. May God's blessings be with you both and with your children.

I began watching the Browns from the year of their inception, 1946. In all that time Gene was one of the very best linemen the Browns ever had. I never knew him personally but in a way, a fan becomes close to a player even though he might never have had the chance to shake his hand.
Now that the last whistle has blown and the last fan has left the stadium, may Gene rest in peace knowing that he did his very best. And may those he left behind also go in peace to always do their best and to live their lives as a champion would.
Pax Vobiscum!

Gene Hickerson was an inspiration to me when I first became interested in football and started playing in a youth league. I was disappointed when I wasn't given the number "66". I followed his career with the Cleveland Browns and was thrilled to meet him in 1992. I have a picture of Gene holding my daughter when she was five months old and Gene made my family feel like we were longtime friends. I was happy when he received his overdue election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and I was glad to attend the induction ceremonies. May God bless Gene and may he rest in peace in Heaven. My condolences go out to his family.

Bob, Eileen, Nancy, and Mike,
As you all must know Gene holds a special place in the Bobby Franklin household with Gene and my dad's friendship going back to their days as teammates at Ole Miss and with the Browns. I will personally miss hearing Gene call me "Little Girl". He did that from the time I was old enough to talk and up until just a couple of years ago. I am now 46. I do remember as a small child when many of the Browns players lived in the Commodore Hotel during the season and Gene called me "Little Girl" once too often. That upset my dad who being a manly man wanted no son of his to be called a "Little Girl" and my dad took me immediately to the barber shop in the hotel and had them give me a crew cut. My mother cried when my dad took me back upstairs as I had no hair left on my head. I might have been traumatized from that!!! Your father always had a special way with kids. In fact I think he was just a big kid at heart to the very end. I will miss him as I know our entire family will too, especially dad. God Bless!!!

Please accept my deepest sympathy on the passing of Gene. I met the two of you at the West End last year. You are wonderful people. I have been a Browns fan my whole life. I'm too young to remember the days when Mr. Hickerson blocked for Jim Brown, but I vividly remember watching #66 clear the way for Leroy Kelly and Bo Scott. My thoughts and prayers go out to Gene's family.

I was lucky enough to see Gene play for the Browns although never in person. He was an outstanding football player. I still have a team photo that I requested in 1969 when I was in 4th grade. I would to start off by saying that I have seen Gene play and hearing the annoucer say Gene Hickerson was the best offensive linemen in NFL history. I am sure that Gene is playing guard on Gods team. I've been a Browns all of my life although I never got to see Gene play. But I remember just 2 short years ago at the last week of Browns training camp for the public, without knowing that a few of the great players including Gene were there in the beverage tent. Then I saw Gene sitting at one of the tables graciously signing autographs. I told my girlfriend that "look thats Gene Hickerson" so I waited till he was done with those that were there and I went over and said Hi and asked if he would sign my Browns towel and he smiled and said "sure I will" and asked what my name was and he signed it "Best to Kevin - Gene Hickerson". That towel has hung on my wall ever since and always will! That was the highlight of my life as a Browns fan! I will never forget it! Thank you Gene for your generosity. Rest in God's peace.

Gene Hickerson was my idol as a young player. I wore # 66 for most of the years I played. I am so sorry that Mr. Hickerson was unable to really enjoy being inducted into the HOF. It was an award long overdue. How many guards lead the way for three HOF running backs. The picture of the great Jim Brown, Bobby Mitchell and Leroy Kelly standing behind Mr. Hickerson fist pumped says it all. " I am here because you Gene where there". Undersized yet a punishing blocker, no one wore # 66 like ole # 66.

I had a mini-poster of Gene Hickerson that came out of a pack of football cards my brother bought when he was in Junior High School (the Browns were my second favorite team). My brother had a library book about Jim Brown and read some passages about Gene Hickerson's blocking.
That he died from such a nasty disease as Alzheimer's is quite sad. We really don't understand the punishment the bodies of professional athletes take. My sympathies to his family.

I went to games with my dad in the late 60's early 70's. I remember my dad once pointing to Gene Hickerson and telling me to "watch that guy block." On the next play, I focused on 66 and he pancaked the guy opposite him, right on cue. What a piece of work as a player Mr. Hickerson was -- and what a class person. Thanks for the memories. He still seems so young.

My sympathies to the Hickerson family in their loss. I first became a Browns fan as a little boy when Gene and Co. used to open up the holes for the great Jim Brown. It was one of the happiest moments of my Browns fandom to see Gene enter the Hall of Fame and have Brown, Kelly and Mitchell wheel him out onto the stage, albeit 25 years later then when his induction should have been. From what I’ve read on Gene he was not only a great Guard but a great human being. RIP Hicks!

Please accept my condolences on the loss of your father. My lifelong love for the Browns begain when I met Gene during a summer camp at Hiram. He was bigger than life to a 8 year old boy and he remains that way to a 52 year old man. I didn't really know Gene and I'm too young to have ever seen him play, but my family and I have attended the Pro Football Hall of Fame Festival every year since 1995. In those 14 years, there has never been an induction ceremony that was so powerful and emotionally touching. The scene of Gene with fellow Browns Jim Brown, Leroy Kelly, and Bobby Mitchell will forever be etched in my memory.
I am glad that Gene was able to finally enjoy this honor with you, his family, before his passing. I extend the deepest condolences of the Kirkwood family and pray that God will be with you during your time of grief.

I loved Gene's great sense-of-humor! Our family had SO MUCH FUN whenever we were with him. I always felt comfortable in my interactions with Gene because he was so down-to-earth and kind. His great strength, endurance and can-do spirit lives on in our family as virtues worthy of emulation. I remember making a straw wreath/copper art craft for his home and many years later, he still had it in his display cabinet. It touched me greatly that he hadn't thrown it out after all those years! Our family is certainly better for having known this precious man. Much love and prayers go with his family at this time...we care so much.
