Sir George Martin, the British music giant who produced the Beatles' original recordings, has died. He was 90.

Martin's cause of death was not immediately released.

Ringo Starr, one of the two remaining Beatles members along with Sir Paul McCartney, announced Martin's death in a tweet: "God bless George Martin," he wrote late Tuesday. "Peace and love to Judy and his family, love Ringo and Barbara. George will be missed."

The iconic Beatles drummer followed up with another post that included an image of Martin with all four of the Beatles.

"Thank you for all your love and kindness," Starr tweeted.

McCartney also tweeted his condolences: "The world has lost a truly great man," McCartney said.

Martin, who was born Jan. 3, 1926, in London, was known as the Fifth Beatle, a claim also made by several musicians, but the band regarded Martin as the true fifth member. A reserved man, Martin quietly helped the Beatles mature from an English club act to the musical geniuses they were meant to be.

He is credited with 30 of their No. 1 hit singles in the U.K. and nearly two dozen No. 1 hits in the United States.

Martin was known for his creativity not only in producing Beatles records, but also for his work in films and on television. He arranged, composed and conducted all sorts of music over the course of a six-decade career.

“When I joined EMI, the criterion by which recordings were judged was their faithfulness to the original," he once told The New York Times. "If you made a recording that was so good that you couldn’t tell the difference between the recording and the actual performance, that was the acme. And I questioned that. I thought, OK, we’re all taking photographs of an existing event. But we don’t have to make a photograph; we can paint. And that prompted me to experiment.”

In 1996, Martin was knighted in honor of all of his work in the music industry.
