Grace Lee Whitney Obituary
Her son Jonathan Dweck said she died of natural causes Friday in Coarsegold, California, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of Fresno.
Whitney played Yeoman Janice Rand in the first eight episodes before being written out of the series. In her autobiography, she wrote that she became an alcoholic before getting treatment and regaining her career with the help of Leonard Nimoy, who starred as Spock in the series.
She returned for the movie franchise, appearing in "Star Trek: The Motion Picture," ''Star Trek III: The Search for Spock," ''Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" and "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country."
Dweck said his mother dedicated the last 35 years of her life helping people with addiction problems, some of whom she met at "Star Trek" conventions.
"Over time, she became appreciative of her short time on 'Star Trek' because she developed meaningful relationships with the fans, Leonard Nimoy and other cast members," Dweck said.
Besides Jonathan, she was survived by her other son, Scott Dweck.

I will never forget our times filming 'Some Like It Hot ' Especially since we were Room mates in at Coronado Hotel. And bringing the boys to to my house in Malibu beach when they were kids and then the parties at the house. Sorry we won't meet this August as planned when we spoke on April 29th. Dear Jonathan & Scott - Knew your mother as a dear sister-in-Christ for over 29 years, both being adopted we were drawn to each other, but found much joy in being together sharing many wonderful times and also cruises with you, one with you Jonathan. I know our Heavenly Father extended His Amazing Grace to our Amazing Grace. While talking together in April after her two birthdays, we talked of walking together with our Lord one day - "ten thousand years and we've just begun". I will greatly miss her and so thankful, Jonathan, for your close Christian family life together these past years. May God comfort, till we all are together again.

I met Whitney in AA when I was just a few years sober and struggling. She was my sponsor, briefly, and there was a period when we talked every day. Her kindness, insight, generosity, humility, and extraordinary comedic talent got me through a very rough time. In public, even presumably anonymous meetings, she was often surrounded by fans, sometimes very aggressive fans, and never showed anything but the utmost kindness. She was a classy, classy lady and I loved her. Much love to her family! She made a difference in my life and many others.

I met Grace at a sci-fi convention in San Francisco. We got into a conversation about the difficulties of living out in the country. At the time, she was trying to get telephone poles put in to get service to her place in Coarsegold. She was so sweet and charming, and I'll never forget how she even did a country accent for me as though we were neighbors. I have no doubt that the light in Heaven just became brighter. I met Grace at a Star Trek convention in Salt Lake. She was very charming, reaching into her own bag for a piece of paper to write her autograph. As we chatted for a few minutes she happened to mention that thru the years following the series her famous checkerboard wig had been stolen. Fun stuff to remember. Von Voyage, Yeoman Rand!
