Hank Raymonds Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 6, 2010.
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Former Marquette basketball coach Hank Raymonds died early Monday after a long battle with cancer, the school said. He was 86.

Raymonds, a former assistant coach under Al McGuire, took over as head coach after McGuire's departure in 1977 and coached until 1983, compiling a career record of 126-50.

"The Marquette family has lost a champion today," said Boston Celtics coach and former Marquette player Doc Rivers. "A true 'Warrior.' For me, I've lost a mentor. Coach was more than a basketball coach. He was my life coach. I'm saddened with his passing and lucky he came into my life."

Raymonds joined Marquette's coaching staff in 1961 under then-head coach Eddie Hickey, who was Raymond's coach at Saint Louis University. Raymonds stayed on when McGuire took over as head coach in 1964, and became known as the sharp basketball tactician behind McGuire's charismatic personality.

Marquette won the NCAA national championship in 1977, and Raymonds took over as head coach after McGuire retired from coaching to go into broadcasting.

All six of his Marquette teams advanced to postseason play, including five trips to the NCAA Tournament. Five of his players were All-America honorees and 16 players were selected in the NBA Draft.

Former Marquette player Bo Ellis said Raymonds was as important to Marquette as McGuire.

"And coach McGuire would be the first to say that," Ellis said. "He gave us more than anyone could imagine every day. We were a family and coach Raymonds treated us like his sons. Without him I wouldn't have a college degree. I had no father when I got to Marquette but I left Marquette with one, coach Raymonds. He did so much for so many. I will miss him dearly."

Current Marquette coach Buzz Williams said he saw Raymonds for the last time on Friday.

"His spirit was as vibrant as it always was," Williams said. "He was selfless and his passion was for the people of our institution and of our department. I am grateful for his willingness to share his wisdom and we will continue to work to honor the totality of what he was about on and off the floor."

Raymonds was born in St. Louis on March 5, 1924, and attended Saint Louis University, where he graduated in January of 1949 with a bachelor's degree in education.

Rick Majerus succeeded Raymond as coach in 1983. After his coaching career, he continued working as the school's athletic director until 1987 and played a lead role in elevating Marquette's women's athletic teams to Division I status in 1985.

"He truly loved everyone involved with Marquette University and it showed," said Tom Crean, who coached at Marquette before taking the job at Indiana. "A great reward for me in nine years of being the head coach was to have a game end and to see coach Raymonds after the game in the hallway on the walk back to the locker room and to get some words of wisdom, encouragement or direction from him. I miss that greatly."

Funeral arrangements were pending, according to the school.

Coach Raymonds coached my father, Dave Erickson, when he first started at Marquette in the early '60's. My father was a shy guy from MN and lost his dad during his time on the team. I believe that Coach Raymonds left an imprint on my dad that stayed with him long after his basketball days, making him a better person and father. The MU basketball family continues to be a source of friendship to many generations thanks to the leadership that Coach Raymonds gave to his players.

I apologize for mispelling coaching and using the word sympathy in the wrong tense. As Coach Wooden once said about Jamaal Wilkes and I quote, "God made a good one, when he made Keith Wilkes" unquote. I would change that and say in describing Coach Raymond's, "he was a great man"! God Bless Mrs. Raymond's, her family and the entire Marquette community. With respect and best wishes, Thomas D. Hogan M.S./Ed.(Counseling) Long Island University/C.W.Post Campus1989.

To Ginnie and all the Raymonds family, please know that all of us, who knew "coach" way back in those days at SLUH, loved playing for him, and we relished the wonderful successes he had for the many years following. He thrilled us at the lunch we had for him just a few years ago, but he seemed just as thrilled. He was a real man in any era.

God bless!

While Hank was assistant coach at Marquette he was also a teacher. I have used the course I took from him several times to coach youngsters. He set a great example as a fine human being. God Bless you, Hank. JK '70

Linda,
My prayers are with you and your family. It's tough to lose a dad, but hopefully you can find some solace in knowing how many lives he touched, including mine, in a positive way. He was a kind and gentle spirit, and knowing him is one of my best memories about Marquette.

I met Hank when I was 13 years old, at a basketball camp in Ohio. I told him I was a big Marquette fan. Feb 27, 1976 I get home from school and there is an autographed program signed by the 1976 team from a game played against Tulane Feb 16th. I passed it along to my nephew a couple years ago, but its something I'll never forget. Even at age 48.

I played on the first team that Hank (we called him "Heine") ever coached. It was the St. Anthony's Grade School team In St. Louis. I was probably the worst player that he ever coached. But I made the team (sat on the bench most of the time) and we won the St. Louis City Championship. I have always remembered him because he was very special to me and my brother Justin who also was on the team. God speed!

Our sincere sympathy goes out to Mrs. Raymonds and all of Coach's family. I was a rather insignificant part of the basketball program in the big scheme of things, but Coach never made anyone feel that way. He made everyone feel important and cared for. In my own small way I feel a big void, especially for the Marquette community. Thanks Coach for always caring.

I was a minor player for Coach Raymonds the first two years he was at CBC in Memphis. Years later, I would see him at various basketball venues around the country. He always remembered my name and had time for a chat. Coach was a class act. My God be good to him.

Coach Raymonds was a kind and gracious man. He never considered his position as a college coach above any other coach. I recall how he sat down by me (a high school coach from Kansas) when he was the head coach at Marquette and asked for my advice about getting players to shoot better from the charity stripe. What an impression he made on a young coach a small Kansas high school! Coach, you will be missed!

Unparalleled integrity. Unconditional unselfishness. Unwavering excellence. Coach Raymonds was a great man and role model. As a university administrator, he is responsible for Marquette's current place on the national stage. As a coach, his focus on team and the technical aspects of the game embodies an approach that basketball sorely misses today. I think of him every practice as I teach my son and his fifth grade team how to shoot using his "circle" technique. As a man and father and citizen - he sets a standard for all to follow. God bless, Coach, and sincere condolences to the Raymonds family and the entire Marquette community.

Dear family of Hank Raymonds: He was an institution from the day I arrived on campus in 1967 throughout the wonderful years of exciting Marquette basketball. Even after he left the spotlight and we moved around the country, I enjoyed watching the games on the internet or TV as the cameras focused on him and acknowledged his contributions to Marquette. A natty dresser with a constant smile on his face! Thanks for sharing him with the Marquette community.

my sincere condolences upon Hank's passing. He was a good friend dating back to grade school. I played against Hank at St. Anthony's in a parochial league--he with St. Anthony's and I with Sts. Peter and Paul. The rivalry continued in high school when he opposed each other--again he with SLUH and I with CBC. After WWII we both went to St. Louis U where Hank was a star on the championship SLU Billiken team. He'll be missed as a basketball icon and person.

As a student representative on the MU Athletic Boad, I had the rare opportunity to get to personally know Coach Raymonds. I learned a great deal from Coach Raymons as well as Coach McGuire. Both men alway had time to spend with me and shared with me a lot of their wisdom even after I graduated.. I enjoyed watching the Warrior play during practice and I was always welcomed in their offices. Coach Raymonds attended daily Mass at St. Bernards in Wauwatosa where he got toknow my mother who he often talked about.

Coach Raymonds was truely a great gentleman and ambassador for MU and a champion of its athletic program. My best wishes to Coach Raymond's family. I treasure my memories of him.
