Harry Wendelstedt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 9, 2012.
NEW YORK (AP) - Longtime umpire Harry Wendelstedt, who worked five World Series and made a call involving Don Drysdale that became one of baseball's most disputed plays in the late 1960s, died Friday. He was 73.

Wendelstedt died at Florida Hospital Memorial Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Fla., near the umpiring school he ran for more than three decades in Ormond Beach. He had been diagnosed several years ago with a brain tumor.

Wendelstedt called seven NL championship series and four All-Star games, and was behind the plate for five no-hitters. He was on the major league umpiring staff from 1966-98.

His son, Hunter, is a big league umpire and wears the same No. 21 that his father wore. The Wendelstedts worked games together in 1998 - it was Hunter's first year in the majors and Harry's last season.

Hall of Fame manager Tom Lasorda has championed Wendelstedt for enshrinement in Cooperstown.

"He's got as good a chance as anybody. He deserves it," Lasorda told The Associated Press after learning of Wendelstedt's death.

Lasorda said he was scouting for Los Angeles and was in the stands when Wendelstedt made his most notable call on May 31, 1968, at Dodger Stadium.

Drysdale was trying for his fifth straight shutout - and was heading toward setting a then-record of 58 2-3 scoreless innings - when San Francisco loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth inning.

Drysdale threw a 2-2 pitch that struck Dick Dietz on the elbow, and the shutout streak seemed to be over. But Wendelstedt, the plate umpire, immediately ruled that Dietz didn't try to get out of the way. Wendelstedt called the pitch a ball and told Dietz to get back in the batter's box.

"I'd never seen that call before in the big leagues," Lasorda recalled. "Never had seen anyone make it."

After a heated argument, the game resumed. On a full-count pitch, Dietz flied out and Drysdale wound up pitching a shutout. Orel He rshiser set the shutout record of 59 innings in 1988, pitching under Lasorda.

"Harry had a wide strike zone, he liked to see hitters swing the bat," Lasorda said, laughing. "Dick Dietz. Harry, he got him out. And the streak continued."

Later in that 1968 season, Wendelstedt called balls-and-strikes when Gaylord Perry of the Giants pitched a no-hitter against St. Louis. The next day, on Sept. 18, Wendelstedt was at third base when Ray Washburn of the Cardinals no-hit San Francisco.

Not that all of Wendelstedt's contested calls went in favor of pitchers. In the 1988 NLCS, Wendelstedt confiscated the glove of Dodgers reliever Jay Howell after it was found to have pine tar. Wendelstedt ejected Howell, drawing some lip from Lasorda, and the reliever was subsequently suspended.

"We got along pretty well," Lasorda remembered. "Nothing too bad."

Harry Hunter Wendelstedt Jr. spent well over half his life in the umpiring field. Even after his retirement, h is umpiring school kept producing many young umpires who wound up working in professional baseball.

I moved to Fla.in 1972 & in 1974 I started umpiring youth,American Legion, High School,Semi-Pro leagues, I did this for 31 yrs.few people realize the danger & physical beating we took behind the plate. While living in Pittsburgh I had the honor of watching Harry completely handle his games.Harry was the reason I got into umpiring he became my idol & mentor from afar ! I was late to learn about his great school ( my biggest regret ) but I did copy Harry's strike calls style ! RIP Harry, you truly are #1 of all time !! R. Miller Hollywood Fla.

Harry worked my games in the Northwest League I played for the Tri City Angels. A very good umpire then but a better MAN. I wanted more strikes but he saw it differently. Our son played in the Bigs for the Orioles. Our thoughts and prayers for the Wendelstat Family.
Hopefully this helps " Grieve for as long as it takes then remember forever."

I didn't know Harry Wendelstedt had died until today. I went to many games at Candlestick Park to watch the Giants during the 60's and 70's when he was umpiring. He was very popular with fans and was a familiar sight....his son is officiating the Giants/Padres game right now. as I type this....Rest in Peace, Harry

I'm so sorry to hear about Harry's passing. What a great guy. While I was at TBS in 1988, he allowed me to not only do a story on the school, but strap on the gear and try it myself. He was so gracious and accommodating. A class act who will be deeply missed.

To the Wendelstedt family,
I met Harry about 21 years ago at a cleaners I worked at for about 13 years, He was a regular customer I saw him on a weekly basis and was a great man with a big heart. Always had kind words to share and always a smile on his face. May God grant you peace during your time of loss and I know heaven is rejoicing as a wonderful man has went home.

R.I.P. my friend with no more pain. The Lord has taken a bigger than life man into his arms and wants him to work the plate on the biggest stage of all, heaven. God, only selects the best.
I thank you, Mr. Wendelstedt for providing me the opportunity to begin my career in umpiring, getting a chance to be on your Umpire School staff, and to learn about how to enjoy all what the great game of baseball can bring. Every umpire that I know will take a piece of you in his heart for the rest of their lives.

As a former Graduate of Harry's school, I can say that he expected the very best of his umpires and the Motto "If you can Umpire here you can Umpire any where" meant alot to me. That school certainly made me a better Umpire and very confident in working any game. Thanks to Harry's school I have umpired games only a few umpires get to umpire. Thank you Harry for opening doors that I will never forget.

I got to meet Harry (he told me Mr. Wendelstedt was his dad) when I took the umpiring clinic his school so generously offer to us local amateur umpires. I know our kids have benefited greatly from this. I know because I am a better umpire for his generosity. My favorite memory? He was talking to a small group of us after one session. What did he want to talk about? The daughter of a friend had caught a record-setting fish, and he was extremely proud of her. I enjoyed listening to him talking about baseball in general and umpiring in particular. He will be missed by all who love baseball. Heaven now; next up, Cooperstown.

I was in the stands on May 31, 1968 when Mr. Wedelstedt made the call of the Century when he would not allow SF Giant Dick Dietz 1b & allowed the late Don Drysdale keep his scoreless streak continue. If you ever listened when Drysadle induced Jack Hiatt to pop up to Wes Parker for the final out in that famous 9th inning You could hear the pounding of the people in the stand behind home plate that was me & everyone else joined in. The other highlight of the game came when The late manager of the Giants Herman Franks was kicked out of the ballgame for protesting the call. Giant's 3b Coach Peanuts Lowery came walking down & you can see clearly how he put a plug of chewing tobacco in his mouth the size of a golf ball just to keep his mouth shut. RIP Henry you & Herman are now together once again. Thanks for the Memories.

I was a student at the school in 1990. Harry and Randy Marsh made it one of the greatest experiences of my life. 100% class act as a person and an umpire. I always took great joy when I was able to see Harry on TV or in Pittsburgh to work a Pirates game. Very proud to say he was my instructor and I had spent time with him. God Bless the family and Hunter. Your Dad will never be gone as long as you work games. Harry was one of a king who will be missed.

When there is love, any life is too short. Your dad had a way of making the joys of life contagious. He will long be remembered for his help with anyone who asked for it...a problem was always turned into a pleasant and companionable experience.

I know you are grateful for your life with your beloved dad, and I feel fortunate to have known him. What a loss to our community!

Thanks for everything you did for our local umpires, I attended more then 3 times for the excellent teaching and fun. I don't know of any other organizations that would give up 3 top umpires to train a bunch of local little league, and High School umpires. We all left not only better umpires, but better people. Harry will be missed, and I know Hunter will carry on the tradition that his father started. We will all miss his humor and teaching. Thanks Harry....

To the family. I went to the Sommers Umpiring school in 1974. Harry was a very good MLB umpire as well as instructor.
