Jo Stafford Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 18, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Jo Stafford, the honey-voiced band singer who starred in radio and television and sold more than 25 million records with her ballads and folks songs, has died. She was 90.

Stafford died of congestive heart failure Wednesday at her Century City home, her son, Tim Weston of Topanga, said Friday. She had been in declining health since October, he said.

Stafford had 26 charted singles and nearly a dozen top 10 hits, her son said. She won a Grammy for her humor.

Stafford's records of "I'll Walk Alone," "I'll Be Seeing You," "I Don't Want to Walk Without You" and other sentimental songs struck the hearts of servicemen far from home in both World War II and the Korean War. They awarded her the title of "GI Jo."

In 1939, she was working with a group of male singers called the Pied Pipers. The group was invited to join the Tommy Dorsey band, a big attraction in the swing era. Soon the Pied Pipers were singing in major hotels and ballrooms and on radio.

A year later, 24-year-old Frank Sinatra joined Dorsey after a brief stint with Harry James, and he and the Pied Pipers melded ideally. Their languorous "I'll Never Smile Again" became the No. 1 hit for 12 weeks and sold 2 million copies. A half-century later, Sinatra remarked about Stafford, "It was a joy to sit on the bandstand and listen to her."

Dorsey gave Stafford her first solo, "Little Man With a Candy Cigar," and it became a hit record. One night in 1944 in Portland, Ore., the temperamental Dorsey got into an argument with one of the Pied Pipers and fired the group.

The Pied Pipers signed with the fledgling Capitol Records, but Stafford left the group to join Johnny Mercer, one of the Capitol founders. Mercer guided her new career with hits such as "Candy," "Serenade of the Bells" and "That's for Me." In demand for personal appearances, she accepted a date at New York's Club Martinique. A shy person, she never played a nightclub again.

"I'm basically a singer, period," she said in a 1996 interview, "and I think I'm really lousy up in front of an audience— it's just not me."

She was a "reluctant star," her son said. "She loved making records and really didn't crave the attention of personal appearances."

At Capitol, Stafford, who had been married to Pied Piper John Huddleston from 1941 to 1943, became reacquainted with Paul Weston, who had been an arranger for Dorsey. They married in 1952, and he acted as her arranger and conductor for the rest of her career. They had two children, Tim and Amy, and four grandchildren.

Despite her shyness, Stafford appeared before studio audiences in radio and television during the 1940s and 1950s. She alternated with Perry Como on a nightly 15-minute radio show in 1944, guest starred on many TV variety shows and had her own series, "The Jo Stafford Show," in 1955-56.

She recorded more than 800 songs during a versatile career that included ballads, folk, Scottish, country and novelty. She even tried comedy. She and Weston recorded an album of numbers on which she sang painfully off-key and he played miserable piano. They were billed as Jonathan and Darlene, but their identity was soon discovered. A second album won them a Grammy in 1960 for best comedy album.

Jo Elizabeth Stafford was born Nov. 12, 1917, in Coalinga, Calif., where her Tennessee father had come to work in the oil fields. When a new field was discovered in Long Beach, he moved his wife and four daughters south. Young Jo studied classical music for more than three years and was cast in a high school production of "Robert." But the 1933 Long Beach earthquake destroyed the school, and she joined her two older sisters singing pop songs on radio as the Stafford Sisters.

The Staffords sang background music at film studios — where Jo met the Pied Pipers.

Stafford made her last recording in 1970 although her songs continue to be used in movie soundtracks, her son said.

She retired voluntarily, he said.

"It really was to raise my sister and I. She walked away from it," he said. "People would sort of ask her, 'How come you stopped singing?' She said: 'For the same reason that Lana Turner doesn't pose in bathing suits anymore.'"

In addition to her son, Stafford is survived by a daughter, Amy Wells of Calabasas, and four grandchildren.

Paul Weston died in 1996.

Many years ago....I remember my Mother and Father saying...OH!!! ...JO STAFFORD!!... she is our favorite female vocalist of all time!!
I was born to wonderful parents in 1959. I have only recently, in the last 6 years, began listening to Ms. Stafford's music. I now understand why Mom and Dad said what they did of her. In my sincerest opinion, I have never heard as beautiful a singing voice as hers in my life! I would like to say that if angels walk among us, then she was certainly one of them. She even seemed to get more beautiful as the years passed! I feel blessed to be able to listen to her legacy of recorded music. My life is richer for it. Thank you Jo Stafford for sharing your beautiful voice with us! Thank you God for Jo Stafford. Sincerely, Tim

When I was a little boy in 1944 I used to sit in my folks car listening to the car radio. I heard Jo Stafford and she made such an impression to me that even all these years I still hum "You Belong To Me". I was shocked to hear of her passing in 2008. What a beautiful voice. Each year I listen to Ms Stafford's music, I love it more and more. What a sumptious, bell-clear voice she had, equally at ease with ballads and uptempo numbers. "You Belong to Me" is my favorite song ever, unequalled over 60 years after it hit number one in the States.

December 28, 2017

For the past 60 years I have had a copy of every song that Jo sang. The amazing thing about her enchanting and beautiful voice was that no matter how many times you listen to her sing the goose bumps are just as big as the first time.

What a beautiful woman, amazing singer, and devoted wife and mother. I was 40 when Jo passed at 90, and, despite our differences in generations and age, I've loved her remarkable, God-given gift since I first heard her. I will continue listening to her music, as well as that of Paul Weston, for the remainder of my days. If there is a Heaven -- and, I hope there is -- I'll look forward to meeting them both one day.

Jo would have been a generation older than me but I remember my parents playing her records in the post-war years. I saw the superb movies "The Master" and '"Carol" which had "No Other Love" in the soundtrack. I knew the melody from Chopin's exquisite nocturne "La Tristesse". Jo's incomparable purity of voice and interpretation do much honor and great justice to this classical piece. Thank you, Jo, for everything.

Jo was one of my greatest influences as a singer when I first started singing the great 1940s and 50s tunes at age 7 in the 1950s. She left a great legacy that will live on and on and on. She and Paul thrilled us with their phenomenal musical gifts and made us all laugh with their epic "Jonathan and Darlene" comedy. Thank you, Jo Stafford. You now join God's heavenly choir of angels to sing beautiful songs throughout eternity!

For Jo...

I hear you...still.

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

I turned 70 in 2009. Jo Stafford was one of my most favorites as a teenager. I used to mimic her as she sang those very special songs she did. Some years ago my husband I and I bought the collection of all of the Stafford songs----those tapes are getting worn out now. Those who love her voice do know immediately when a song begins that it's the GREAT JO STAFFORD!!!! We are so lucky to have had Stafford---and of course Mr. Weston.

The Tennessee Waltz was one of the latest records being played at the Paradise Cinema. Karachi .West Pakistan during the interval in 1951 and I was instantly enraptured by the beautiful, clear, wistful vocal, with every note of the wide range of the song effortlessly sung.
I rushed to the local record shop thinking that the record was by Patti Page who'se version friends had told me they'd heard on Radio S.E.A.C. from Ceylon. "No" said the salesgirl"It was by Jo Stafford. We had 100 copies from England and they've all been sold".
From that time I enjoyed discovering the variety of Jo's records and when I moved to London in 1953,joined her fan club. Through the club I made many good friends including enthusiasts Tom Colborn in 1954 and Michael Flynn in 1957-both sadly now deceased.
My ultimate joy was meeting Jo and her husband Paul Weston on June 7th 1959 in the bar of the London Palladium Theatre following Jo's appearance there that night for a live T.V. show. I again met her at the London flat of her fan club secretary Jack Saunders and later in the 1960's during the filming of her T.V. series at Elstree. While finally on two later occasions at my friend Joan Meek's residence in north London where together with Tom and Michael I was able to talk indulgently with Jo and Paul about their careers.
What a privilege it was to have met two such charming people who'se records continue to give the world so much pleasure.
However, the quest still continues,to urge record companies to transfer all Jo's recordings onto c.d.s including previously unissued material.

My sympathies to the family and friends of Ms. Stafford.
I danced standing on my father's feet to Ms Stafford's songs. When I asked, "What makes you such a great dancer Poppa?", he would reply, "It's the voice;you have to pick the smoothest voice to take the smoothest steps."
Each time I hear "the smoothest voice", it brings a smile to my face. From reading here, it appears that wonderful voice evokes nothing but good and happy memories no matter the circumstances the first time each person heard it. I've made it a mission to introduce that voice to as many people as I can.
Even though I lost Pop many years ago; I can listen to a beautiful voice that allows me to give him a hug and dance on his feet anytime I want.
Travel in peace and sing, sing, sing.

My deepest condolences to Tim & Amy on the passing of their mother Jo Stafford. I was born in the mid 60's, but I've enjoyed listening to her music and collecting her 78's and 45's from the 40's and 50's ever since I was a child. I can usually hear her 3 or 4 times a day while listening to the XM channel 4 40's station at work, either with Tommy Dorsey and Sinatra, solo, with the Pied Pipers, or with Gordon MacRae. When Christmas and ski season comes, I play the 'Ski Trails' and 'Happy Holiday' albums. My vinyl listening weekends usually include "Sunday Kind of Love", "I Guess I'll Have To Dream The Rest", "Candy", "Trolley Song", "Haunted Heart", "You Belong To Me", "Things We Did Last Summer", "Jambalaya", "Shrimp Boats", and "Adi-Adios Amigo". She had a beautiful voice that brought a lot of joy to people. I will pray for you and her.

As a teenage I first got to know the voice of Jo Stafford via her records and broadcasts over Radio Luxembourg and the V.O.A. It was a voice of immense warmth and versatility that embraced just about everything from folk and jazz to show tunes and novelty numbers.
I later met and became friendly with the face behind that voice. She turned out to be a tall, rather shy lady but with a ready wit and quiet charm. Possessed of an enquiring mind she was an avid reader, mainly of historical works, an excellent bridge player but most of all a caring being.
Hers was a voice, that once heard, became immediately recognisable .Completely devoid of artifice and with its almost imperceptible vibrato it echoes through my memory and haunts me yet.

To the family of Jo Stafford and especially Tim... I believe I can offer my condolences on behalf of the Russian Jazz Community and especially Professor Gennady Golshstein. Gennady thought the world of your mother. I had gotten your Mother's address from you last year for Gennady and he mailed a letter and a copy of our latest CD and DVD. Gennady composed most of the music on the CD and I composed the lyrics - the same for the DVD. The DVD was of one of our concerts in Saint Petersburg, Russia. I hope your Mother had a chance to listen and view them and to know how much she was loved and how she had inspired so many.

When I would go to Gennady & Lucy's apartment (sitting on the English Embankment in Saint Petersburg, Russia) to work on the lyrics I wrote for the CD - I was often entertained by Gennady playing some of his favorite records with your dear Mother singing. I know she was a wonderful role model for so many in the Jazz Community. Please know that your Mother will live on in her wonderful music.

Please email me when you are able: [email protected]

I was yet to be born when Jo Stafford was inspiring our solders and sailors with her beautiful voice during WWII. Many brave and lonely hearts serving in desolate and faraway places were touched by her melodies, so much so that they gave her a unique title to show how they felt about her. I feel that freedom loving people everywhere owe Ms Stafford a debt of eternal gratitude for her musical contributions which helped to undergird our servicemen and women during those hard fought and perilous times, boosting their sometimes sagging morale and keeping spirits high.
The first time I heard Ms Stafford's "I'll Be Seeing You", I fell in love with her; her unique talent permeates that soulfully beautiful, hauntingly melancholic song and makes me hang on every word, as though she is singing only to me. I imagine every GI and sailor felt the same way and loved her too, as much as I do, and I'm sure that each of her fans , in his or her own special way, is sadly lamenting, "Goodbye beautiful lady; I'll be seeing you".

As a Young teenager during the second World War I became obsessed with the tuly magnificant voice of dear Jo Stafford. A talent second to none and a beautiful person to boot. May You rest in eternal peace. You will not soon be forgotten.

To the family of Jo Stafford, My Dad served in the Army during WWII and also the Korean war....needless to say, he was very much missed by my mother. Listening to Jo Stafford's beautiful music was something that helped her get through it all.
In 1989 as my mother lay in a coma and dying, she suddenly opened her eyes and started singing "I'll be seeing you" we all knew she was saying good-bye to all of us....that song will forever be in my heart whenever I think of my mom....Thank you Jo Stafford and to your family, my sincere sympathies.

Grew up during the 1940's listening to great singers like Jo Stafford that could make you feel the message of the ballad they sang.
Talent lost but not forgotten.
God Bless Jo Stafford and Family.

I close my eyes and hear. Fly the oceans in a silver plane. See the jungle when it's wet with rain. Just remember darling all the time. You belong to me. Thank you, and God bless you Jo Stafford.

It was Christmas morning in 1956 and at the time I was six years old, I remember waking up a rushing downstairs to the Christmas tree to see what Santa had brought. As I entered the living room I could hear the beautiful voice of a woman singing and there I saw a brand new record player that even changed the records automatically and there was a record already playing. As I got closer I saw the bright red Columbia label spining round. Looking down I saw the album cover and It was Jo Staffords Christmas Album. I still have the record today and it's my favorite. I'm happy to be able to share this with her family. Sorry for Your loss and may God bless.

Somewhere in the attic of my parents' house there are several old 78's of the beloved Jo Stafford. Her voice was like smooth satin. What a loss the world has suffered. My condolences to her family.

To the Family of Jo Stafford: Jo Stafford was a classy lady and vocalist who sang herself into the hearts of millions for decades. Music is a world communication regardless of language, and she did it all. A person of her talent comes along so seldom. I can still hum many of her great songs and hear her voice in memory, unlike any other recording artist!

May Our Lord Bless you with strength, comfort, guidance, and love as you miss her now and the many days to come.

God must have a place for her in the Heavenly Choirs!!
