Joe Nuxhall Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 16, 2007.
CINCINNATI (AP) - Joe Nuxhall, who was the youngest player in major league history and the beloved "old left-hander" on Cincinnati Reds radio broadcasts, has died. He was 79.

Nuxhall died overnight following a bout with cancer, the team said Friday. He had surgery for prostate cancer in 1992, followed by a mild heart attack in 2001.

The cancer returned last February, when Nuxhall was preparing for the Reds' spring training. He called some games last season even though his left leg was swollen by tumors. He was hospitalized again this week.

Nuxhall and play-by-play announcer Marty Brennaman described the Big Red Machine's two World Series titles in the 1970s, Pete Rose's return as player-manager and then banishment for gambling in the 1980s, and another World Series championship in 1990.

Nuxhall's place in baseball lore was secured the moment he stepped onto a big-league field. With major league rosters depleted during World War II, he got a chance to pitch in relief for the Reds on June 10, 1944.

No one in modern baseball history has played in the majors at such a young age - 15 years, 10 months, 11 days old. He got two outs against St. Louis before losing his composure, then went eight years before pitching for the Reds again.

He retired as a full-time radio broadcaster after the 2004 season, the 60th anniversary of his historic pitching debut.

I'll never forget the time at Candlestick Park after the Reds played the Giants one day. I asked a number of players for autographs after the game, but was turned down flat. But when I asked you for your autograph, you happily put down all the stuff you were carrying and signed a baseball for me. To me, that said a lot about the kind of person you were. You were an inspiration on and off the field and in the booth and you will always be the premiere voice of the Reds to me. Thanks for all of the great memories.

When the Reds came to Plant City for Spring Training, I was one of the volunteer "Gate Guardians" who worked the press gate
near the field. As a fellow left-hander and native Hamiltonian, I was thrilled to meet Joe, and he and Marty were delightful in person
whether they were on the field, in the stands, or behind the mic. I want to send my heartfelt condolences to the Nuxhall family
and thank them for sharing Joe with all of us throughout these many years.

Thank you to the Nuxhall family for allowing all of us to take part in the celebration of Joe's life. He was one of a kind and we were so blessed to have him in our lives and our community. He gave us all an example of what it means to "give back" for the gifts we have been given...and learning from that will be our gift to him and his memory.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Nuxhall family. I was fortunate enough to meet Joe when I used to work for the Reds Security Staff during the 1990 wire to wire season. He was one of the finest gentlemen I have ever known or probably will ever know! Spring training is really going to be tough this year without Joe but I know he will be looking down letting Marty know that he is watching him!! God Bless you Ol' Lefthander!!

My best friend and I had the opportunity to meet Joe Nuxhall 3 years ago. What a sweet and kind man. We were actually waiting in line to meet him at the Reds Hall of Fame, and the people in charge cut the line off in front of us. Joe Nuxhall said he wanted to meet us because we were waiting so patiently. Even though I am way too young to remember Joe playing, he was still my favorite player. He will definatly be missed by the city of Cincinnati and Reds fans around the country. I saw a picture that said "Joe has rounded third and headed home". I broke down in tears because it was very touching.

Dear Nuxhall Family:

Please know that there were, without doubt, many thousands more people who would have loved to come pay tribute to Joe. I am just one of those.

I grew up listening to Marty and Joe on the Reds Radio. The Reds, and their great announcers kept me going through some tough years - when my parents died. I was young (12-13 yrs old) at the time, but memories of Joe and that great team kept me going.

I'll never forget the kindness and simplicity of Joe Nuxhall. His down-to-earth style will be greatly missed. Wished that today's ballplayers would show 1/10 the kindness and humility that Joe Nuxhall possessed.

We will miss Joe, and I wish I could have met him - he will always be a Reds HERO to me. Indeed, to me Joe, with all due respect to Pete Rose, best represented the Cincinnati Reds.

May God bless and confort you in these days of sorrow. The Carey Family and so many more are Praying for you. Take care.

In Prayer,

Joe, you will truly be missed here in Hamilton. As the residents of Hamilton lined High Street to watch you "round third and head for home" for the last time, as you were driven to your resting place,it was truly amazing. You are an idol to Hamilton and it's surrounding areas. Thanks for all you did! We will miss you!!!

I never met Joe, and have only lived in this area for the past 12 years. I have listened to Joe and Marty, and enjoyed every minute of their running play-by-play. I am in awe at the enormous outpouring of love and dedication this man has earned, what a great man he was! I plan to buy his book and read it to my grandchildren, and instill in them his values and morals. I am greatfull for having been here to experience even a little of his magic. We should all strive to be like Joe, and have 6000 people at our funeral, telling the world how woderfull and caring we were. He has set a standard for all of us to follow.

Our heartfelt sympathy to the Nuxhall family. My husband and I were having breakfast at Bob Evan's Saturday morning, November 10th. Joe was there and greeted us with a smile and good morning as we walked by. We stopped, said hello and exchanged a few words. I am especially grateful for this small amount of time that we were able to share with Joe. He has touched many lives throughout our hometown and across our country. Thanks, Nuxhall family, for sharing your husband and father with us. He will be greatly missed and will hold a special place in our hearts.

Twenty years ago while working at Gold Star Chili on Pleasant Ave. was when I met Mr. Nuxhall. Then a few years ago my daughter had Mrs. Nuxhall for second grade at North and he came to her classroom as part of the Character project. My daughter came home smiling and bragging that she actually got to meet him and he shook her hand. It WAS an honor to have met him. He was a great man and his smile will be missed here in Fairfield.

Thank you Joe, for being the inspiring person you were to so many and always will be.
My Dad grew up with ya back in the 30's &'s 40's as kids in Hamilton. Our family and especialy my son who loves the reds and is a great catcher and knows thanks to you that if that's what he wants to work with the Red's orgnaization, he knows anything is possible in anything he chooses to do in life. My Dad spoke so highly of you and pointed out to me his baby daughter all the good works you have done for Hamilton, and knew you were that kind of boy before the Reds.
I just want to say Thank You never forgetting your roots, You were definately 1 in a lifetime. We just moved back from Tennessee but we bragged about what a good man this area always had. You will be so missed but your personality and just staying yourself and giving back will never ever be forgotten.
I just keep thinking of all the greats and friends you made over the years were were waiting there at home base for ya.

The best memories I have while growing up is watching the Reds on tv with my dad. He'd have the tv volume turned all the way down (no such thing as "mute" way back then) & have the radio turned on so he could hear Ol' Lefty broadcast the game. I didn't know Joe personally, as so many others did, but I still shed some tears hearing he'd passed. May his family be blessed in this time of sorrow and may they take comfort in knowing he's up in heaven, looking down on them and his beloved Cincinnati Reds.

When I was in college, I drove a limousine part time for extra money. I was lucky enough to get to drive Joe, Marty and Boomer Esiason to a charity event being held here in Dayton. Joe (and Marty & Boomer, also) was so nice, and friendly! He and Boomer talked with me a bit before going into the event, and Joe gave me a squeeze on the shoulder and a beaming smile before he left. I met Joe Nuxhall last December at a small party in Louisville. I had no idea who he was because I do not follow baseball at all. He and I were sitting in a living room talking when someone walked in and ask him for his autograph. He smiled, laughed and said sure. He had a wonderful laugh. He kinda seemed like my grandpa. When the guy left, I ask him who he was. He looked at me and said you really dont know who I am do you? I said nope. He really seemed happy about that. He was a very amazing man to talk with, the had great stories, and I wish I had known more about him before that night last December. Peace.

I remember spending every Sunday afternoon with my radio and my scorebook, listening to Joe & Marty call the games. Those are some of my fondest childhood memories. It was sad to hear about the death of long-time Cincinnati Reds radio announcer Joe Nuxall. I grew up listening to the “old lefthander” through the Reds glory days. His down home style of broadcasting the game made you enjoy the game better. I remember going to games and taking my transistor radio so I could Joe and Marty. My dad was an immigrant from Poland and worked at the iron factory in his spare time he loved to listen to the Reds games. He and I enjoyed listening, day and nighttime to the radio program. He had a special place on the kitchen table "for the Cincinnati games". He died when he was 86 years old ...but even after he passed away...I continued to listen to Nuxhall. There used to be a saying...about agreat guy..."He's God's gift to women..." but I say, Joe Nuxhall's VOICE...was God's gift to all of us...in the tri-state and further areas. Peace be with you, Joe Nuxhall!!!!

Thanks for the memories Joe! My favorite memory is when Marty would be announcing and the Reds would hit a homer and you could hear Joe in the backround screaming Get out of here, Get out of here. Thanks for all you did for a great organization and a great city.

I never got an opportunity to meet the ole' lefthander, but I was a huge fan of his. The first voice I tuned into as a kid listening to the Reds on radio was Joe's. I got the biggest charge listening to his excited home run calls because that was how I felt when a Reds player hit one. In my books he was the best. No one can ever replace Joe.
I want to extend my heartfelt sympathies to his wife, and sons and their families for their loss.
May God hold you all close and give you comfort in your time of loss.
I am sure that one day, when we all leave these earthly bonds and reach our heavenly home, we will see Joe again.

Many may not remember that Joe did radio for Miami U Basketball back in the 60's. I surprised him at one of his book signings and he remembered me like it was yesterday. That's the kind of man Joe always was. God bless him.

Had the honor of meeting Mr Nuxhall a number of times while we were neighbors. He was an exemplary gentleman in all ways. My sincere sympathies to Kim and the rest of his family in the loss of this icon in Cincinnati, baseball and Fairfield.
