Margo Dydek Obituary
Cathy Roberts, the operations manager for the Northside Wizards in the Queensland Basketball League, where Dydek was head coach, confirmed her death to The Associated Press
. The Poland-born Dydek, who was pregnant with her third child, suffered the heart attack on May 19. She collapsed at her home in Brisbane and was put in a medically induced coma.
Roberts said that Dydek was at an early stage in her pregnancy and that her unborn child had also died.
Dydek was the No. 1 pick in the 1998 WNBA draft by the Utah Starzz. She also played for San Antonio, Connecticut and Los Angeles.
The 2.13-meter (7-foot-2) Dydek was once said to be the tallest active professional female basketball player in the world.
She held the record for most blocks in a WNBA career, with 877 in 323 games, and led the league in blocks nine times, from 1998 to 2003 and again from 2005-07.
On August 27, 2008 Dydek signed with the Los Angeles Sparks following time away from basketball due to the birth of her first son in April 2008.
An entry on Dydek's Facebook page says she was born on April 28, 1974 in Warsaw, Poland to a 2-mter (6-foot-7) father and a 1.95-meter (6-foot-3) mother. She had two sisters, and her elder sister, Kashka used to play for the Colorado Explosion of the now defunct ABL, and in Poland.
Tina Thompson, a former teammate of Dydek's on the Sparks, said on the WNBA's Twitter feed: "My condolences to the family of Margo Dydek, may she rest in peace!"
The Brisbane-based Wizards posted a statement on their website Friday.
"Always in our hearts - Margo," it said. "With great sadness we acknowledge the passing of ... Margo Dydek. Margo suffered a heart attack just over a week ago and passed away Friday 27th May, peacefully and surrounded by her family.
"You were a much-loved member of our community and we will miss you greatly. Our hearts go out to your family, David and your beautiful boys xx."
She is survived by her husband, David, and two sons, David, 3, and Alex, seven months.

Margo & I shared a close friend from Poland. His name is Kamil. I had the pleasure of having her in my home. She was such a kind special spirit. Margo loved all of our cats, and we always enjoyed when we had the pleasure of her at our home. Margo played for the Utah Starzz at that time.

I will never forget the years the Comets were here in Houston. The opportunity to see so many great atheletes come through our city. To watch Margo play was truly a gift. I am so sad to hear about Margo passing. I had season tickets for the San Antonio Silver Stars and our section was Margo. I can just see her look over at us with our signs and have a beautiful smile. I will never forget you. To her husband and boys may god comfort you at this time. For her parents and sister I would see at games you have lost a wonderful daughter. Women's basketball has lost one of its greatest ambassadors and featured attractions... Malgorzata "Margo" Dydek... once the tallest player in the WNBA.
And as the great nation of Poland mourns the tragic passing of its native daughter and her unborn child... I extend my thoughts and prayers to her family... especially to her husband, David, and her two young sons... David (3 years old) and Alex (7 months old).

I am so very saddened over Margo's passing. My husband and I have had season tickets for the Connecticut Suns since the very beginning and have seen Margo play and we just loved her. It's like the players become a part of your family; particularly because we sit right next to the team. Watched Margo throughout her WNBA career-even moreso when after San Antonio became the Utah Starrz new home. The fans embraced her. The section leaders did their best to make her feel at home. I watched you play in Salt Lake City when you were with the Starzz and loved watching you play. You never felt the need to slam dunk the ball despite everyone yelling for you to do so. You played the game without an attitude. When the Starzz were transferred to San Antonio was a sad day.
