Michi Kobi Obituary
Born Machiko Okamoto Nov. 2, 1924, in Sacramento, California, Kobi experienced a life-changing period during World War II, when her family was interned in a concentration camp in Utah along with others of Japanese descent. She turned to acting while in the camp, appearing in a production of "Our Town" as a means of self-expression. After the war, she studied acting at New York University.
Kobi's notable films included "Tokyo After Dark" (1959), "12 to the Moon" (1960), and "Hell to Eternity" (1960). She was in the original Broadway cast of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" in 1963, playing Nurse Nakamura. On television, she appeared on series including "The Californians" and "Law & Order."

Other than a handful of small roles, Kobi largely left acting after the early 1960s, frustrated by the dearth of good roles for Asian women.

My heartfelt condolences to the family of Michi Kobi. She was a beautiful woman and a very talented actress. I was happy to learn that she lived a long fulfilled life. I respect her greatly for the career choice she made when she could no longer achieve quality parts that would complement her talent. She can sleep peacefully now knowing that very soon all citizens of God's Kingdom will be totally equal and all will have the same opportunity offered through Jesus' ransom sacrifice, the perfection that Adam lost for us with everlasting life in view.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss and would like to offer my sincere condolences. It's very hard to bear the loss of someone so dear and although there is little that one can say or do to take away all your pain, please know that you are in the thoughts and prayers of many.
