I have never in my 18 years of life been aware of this officer nicki, his death, or grave. However tonight July 22 2013 on a full moon my husband, a friend, and myself ended up in the cemetery where Nicki rests. While we were near his grave and memorial bench I told my husband and friend, "I'm drawn to this grave stone!" Pointed then walked straight to his grave... when I read the stone I was frozen and began to cry. Today would have been his 39th birthday. I immediately told my husband and friends something bad happened to him he was a young police officer, someone killed him. And that's when I looked up his story, and this is the only place I found to share my story. I had to let someone who might have known him know about my experience. I sat on nicks bench talking to him and we all wished him a happy birthday. I hope you are at peace nick, and I hope you're loved ones will find peace as well.

To the family: May the comfort from family and friends continue to strengthen you, and may you find comfort in the words found in the Holy Scriptures: "And he will wipe out every tear from their eyes, and death will be no more, neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things have passed away."

I go to the cemetery every Saturday to my mother's grave. She died just before Christmas last year. It is hard. Your husband is buried not very far from my mother in the Garden of Devotion. I was so sad when I saw his grave this Saturday. I know I will be sad every Saturday not only for the loss of my mother but for the loss you have suffered. Mother had lived her life span but Officer Erfle still had so much to give, so much to live for. There is an old Irish saying - "Grieve not too long that he is gone, but rejoice forever that he was." My heart goes out to you and your sons. God bless always.

May we never forget who Officer Erfle was and may you and your family always know that he will be remembered for all the years ahead. "Wings"
Your life was full and had so much meaning,
you never dwelled on the chance of leaving.
Facing each day with a possible threat,
and not one moment lived with a regret.
So many people see but don't understand,
that we protect and serve in a not so perfect land.
There wasn't time for you to say good-bye,
but I can hear you clearly saying -- 'Please don't cry'.
Your life has been rich and sweet,
you'll be missed by your brothers and sisters on the street.
You don't have to face another hassle,
now you can go live in your own little castle.
Getting your wings up in the sky,
where one day you'll teach us all to fly.

Dear Erfle Family,
I deeply sympathize with you because my father was a firefighter who left us too early (unrelated to the job), while I worried for 20 years about my brother who was a frontline officer just like Nick until his retirement last year. Furthermore, Nick truly was one of Phoenix's finest, so his passing is my loss as well. However, I can only imagine what you special people are going through. My heartfelt best wishes go to you all. I wish this tragedy never happened. May God bless.

Fallen Hero
In Loving Memory of Nick Erfle
When the battle is over
cut short by hate
another hero falls
You are a hero
not because of how
you died
But
how you lived your life
Always without complaint
through ill health
Always a smile
for all you met
Love so strong
for family and friends
Today our hearts break
A loss, no one will
ever forget
Thanking God for sharing
this loved one
Even though the time was short
It was a privelege,
to know you
We mourn for all the memories
we will never have a chance
to make
A horse stands at attention
Empty boots in stirrups
Police helicopters in formation
Missing man drops away
Dispatcher speaks
Goodnight sir
Goodbye sir
Rest in peace
You will be deeply missed
