Naomi Sims Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 4, 2009.
NEW YORK (AP) - Naomi Sims, the barrier-breaking African-American fashion model who in 1968 became the first black model to appear on the cover of Ladies' Home Journal, has died. She was 61.

Sims, said by some to be the first black supermodel, died Saturday of cancer in Newark, N.J., her son Bob Findlay told The New York Times. It had been decades since she left the runway to become an author and launch her own beauty empire.

Sims attained success at the same time that the "Black is Beautiful" movement was taking hold, and her accomplishments helped pave the way for the black runway stars of the 1970s, including Pat Cleveland, Alva Chinn and Beverly Johnson.

Sims often spoke of her difficult start - as a gangly foster-care kid in Pittsburgh who towered over the other children in her school. In 1966, she came to New York City to attend the Fashion Institute of Technology on scholarship.

When she began approaching modeling agencies, she was turned down again and again - with some telling her that her skin was too dark. Instead of giving up, she pushed forward and approached photographers directly.

The approach landed her the cover of the Times' August 1967 fashion supplement. She used that photo to market herself directly to advertising agencies, and within a year she was earning $1,000 a week and appearing in a national television campaign for AT&T. Before long, she was modeling for top designers.

Sims gave up modeling after five years and launched her own wig-making business geared toward black women. She eventually expanded the multimillion-dollar business to include beauty salons and cosmetics, and she wrote "All About Health and Beauty for the Black Woman" and other books.

Sims was born in Oxford, Miss., in 1948. Her parents divorced soon after she was born and her mother moved Sims and her two sisters to Pittsburgh.

Besides her son, Sims is survived by a sister, Betty, and a granddaughter.

July 10, 2014

When I was a child, I remember viewing the cover of Life Magazine which featured the first black supermodel, Naomi Sims, when it first came out around 1969 (as well as viewing the inside photos). She was the first black model to ever appear on their cover. Naomi Sims was definitely a fashion model icon. Life was one of the magazines my parents consistently purchased for our household. I remember thinking how beautiful Naomi was and hearing how ground breaking it was for a black model to appear on the cover of a major magazine such as Life (since the publication was extra large, in size, it was even more memorable). As a little black girl, Naomi's elegance spoke volumes to me when I saw Life magazine and subsequent publications featuring her. Naomi was also the first black model to appear on the cover of Ladies Home Journal (1960s). It was virtually impossible for black models to be accepted in the modeling industry (when Naomi got her big break in the 1960s)and she had intelligent ways to work around the often closed-door system to ultimately be accepted without altering her elegant style nor who she was. She paved the way for future supermodels Pat Cleveland, Beverly Johnson, Iman and those thereafter who all owe her a depth of gratitude. Glad she was able to attend Oprah's Legends Ball before she passed away. Rest In Peace.

My heart goes out to your entire family. When death reaches into our families and snatches away our loved one, the shock of loss can be the severest emotional blow of our lives. Grief is so difficult to endure that we suffer sleepless nights, empty days and a feeling of not knowing how to go on. God sees our tears and pain of heart. For He is near to those that are broken at heart; and those who are crushed in spirit he saves. He is healing the brokenhearted ones. He is there giving support to all who are falling, and is raising up all who are bowed down. So that the power beyond what is normal may be God’s and not that out of ourselves to help you go from one day to next. (Ps 147:3)

A phenominal woman and ultimate beauty! As a student of F.I.T. in 70's N.Y.C. , her name echoed throughout to give reccognition to an individual in a fashion show displaying exceptional "star quality". Everyone attempted to immitate Naomi!! May her son and family be blessed with love , comfort and support as they endure.

I grew up when being black was not considered beautiful. In 1965, at the age of 13 years old, I was inspired by this tall, beautiful, dark complected fashion model, Naomi Sims. She blew me away! To this day, I am thankful to Naomi. She made me the women I am. I have always been complimented on my style, hair, and make-up. Today at 57 years old I am still inspired by her courage and beauty.

August 20, 2009

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
