Andy Hallett Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 31, 2009.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Andy Hallett, who made his mark playing green-skinned, good-guy demon Lorne on the TV series "Angel," has died of congestive heart disease. Hallett was 33.

Hallett was taken by ambulance to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles after having problems breathing and died there Sunday, following a five-year battle with the heart condition, his agent Pat Brady said Tuesday.

His father, Dave Hallett, was by his side.

"Andy was the all-American boy from Massachusetts," Brady said. "He was a hoot. He was comfortable wherever he went. Girls loved him. He was a very gregarious, happy young man."

Born and raised in Osterville, Mass., Hallett moved out to Los Angeles when he was 23 and worked as a messenger at a talent agency, said Brady.

He went on to become an assistant to Joss Whedon's wife, Brady said. It was when Whedon saw the lanky Hallett perform karaoke that he had him audition for "Angel," a spinoff of Whedon's hit series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer." Hallett snagged the part of Lorne.

Hallett proved himself a fan favorite on "Angel" as the show tune loving, red horned demon seer who runs the karaoke club Caritas and can read a person's aura when they sing, revealing their problems and futures.

The series, starring David Boreanaz as the brooding vampire Angel, ran for five seasons on the WB network before it was canceled, ending in 2004.

Hallett was diagnosed with his heart condition at the end of the show, said Brady, and had been in and out of hospitals for the past five years. He decided to concentrate on his own music, stepping away from acting.

Hallett, an only child, is survived by his father Dave Hallett and mother Lori Hallett.

Andy was such a talented comedian and actor. As an emo choir kid, his character Lorne in Angel was so endearing. I hope he is resting easy.

Condolences to Andy’s family. Even though it’s been a long time since his passing I’m sure for them, it often feels like yesterday. I did not know Andy, I knew Loren. Through Loren, Andy showed us his immense talent and lucky us, he chose to share it. I, for one, sincerely hope he can feel how much entertainment and sheer joy he brought to his fans. He was bar none my favourite character on Angel. To live a short time on Earth and have such a long legacy with so many people who hold his memory dear, is truly a gift. Your talent was a gift, but you were a blessing. We still watch you sing. Be at peace.

Andy, if your reading these from heaven, it´s ganna take awhile, as you can see you were so loved. My daughter is 12 and has your pictures and your sideshow doll and just loves you. As you can see you sang yourself into many peoples lives, and ironically worked on a show called Angel.
Your not missing to much here, it´s still pretty much a wreck only with a virus attached to it. But when we put on angel and go to the episode where you sing " I will survive" well, that make things better. Well, just wanted to leave you this message in case you check in, you take care of those wings in heaven, Angel.

I was a fan of Angel, but thought you always stole the show. May you Rest In Peace!

When someone so talented dies so young, we are all left with wondering all that he would have given us if he had lived. But because Andy lived so vibrantly, he created characters that will never be forgotten.

Sorry for your loss. I too suffered the loss of a talented brother, Haime. He was a stand up comedian, actor, singer and also dabbled with some writing as well. He never got the chance to show his amazing talents to millions like your Andy but from what I know of him, they were very much alike. I hope you find solace in knowing Andy brought so much joy to millions. God bless to you and yours.

I realize this message is far too late. I only just heard that Andy Hallett had died. I just want to offer my sincere condolences on his passing although it's been quite some time. Years ago, I was experiencing a very difficult time in my life, my husband had been sick with cancer and I took a new job to better support our family. To make a long story short, I was miserable and extememly anxious every day upon waking, I learned that if I turned on the show "Angel" at 6:00 AM upon waking (on TNT) I was less anxious, particularly if the episode featured Andy. He made me smile and I loved his sweet voice. I KNOW this was just TV, but he was luminescent; a natural talent and in his own way helped me thru some very rough days. I'll always be grateful for the talent he shared, however, briefly, with the world. My nephew, who is 27 and
myself still talk and laugh about him on his show. Anyway, I don't ever post on these kinds of websites but I thought I'd could share how appreciated he is (was), no matter how late. God bless his soul and his memory. Mary Davis Marlton, NJ

Watched and loved Andy's work since I was 9. I think the best thing you can do in life is something meaningful and memorable, and Andy did that (at least for me) in bringing Lorne to life and being a part of such a wonderful show. I'm grateful to him and have so much respect for him. If his family reads this, all the best to you all.

I am so heart broken today to hear that Andy is not with us any longer. I had never taken the time to look for him online before and I have always loved Lorne from Angel. He played such a wonderful good feeling character. Today I decided to go online and find out what Andy looked like without his make up and I was so sad to hear that he has passed. May you rest in peace Andy.

just happened to be watching "Angel" this morning. It was the episode when Lorne is forced to read people and steal their futures while doing a Las Vegas show. Was on my couch and googled his name into my phone. Was shocked to see he had passed. I didn't know. I don't watch much entertainment news..but I'm very sorry to hear such a talented person was taken so soon. To think it started 5 yrs ago from a tooth infection that lead to damaging his heart. Unbelievable! I read the first time he sang in front of a huge audience, Patti LaBelle was there in Boston. She described him as a white kid whose got soul going on when she heard him sing. Bet he still singing up there now. RIP...

By chance I googled Andy's name today to see if he had any projects coming up. To my dismay I read the terrible news of his passing. I am an enormous admirer of his talent and a huge fan of his unforgettable character in Angel. On a corny, yet personal note, some of the "Host's" words of wisdom were of comfort to me as my father was dying of a brain tumor at the time Andy's episodes were being screened here in Australia. Thank you Mr Hallett and may you rest in peace...

Andy was a beautiful person inside and out. I saw him at almost every convention I went to and at each one he was the source of laughter and wonderful stories. At the high school here at the month anniversary at his passing over 100 students wore green to honor Andy. He has touched the hearts of everyone who he met and heard of him. I am grateful to be able to hear his voice and see his lovely face (even in the green makeup) anytime thru the Angel shows.

Heaven shines a little brighter now that he is there.

I met Andy at a convention in Cleveland, Ohio. He was such a sweet, gracious person. I am so terribly sorry for your loss Dave and Lori Hallett. Words cannot express the terrible tragedy of losing a son. Please know that he touched many lives in his much too short time on this planet, not only in his career, but in simple moments of kindness and the way he connected with people he met, if only briefly. I offer my deepest sympathy for your loss and hope you will be somewhat consoled by what an exceptional ray of sunshine your son was.

We just finished the last 2 episodes of Angel, again, when my daughter asked me to Google and see what Andy is doing these days. My surprise turned to horror and then shock. We sat there ice cold like the day my wife died 2 years ago.
We are so sorry. Terrible loss. Our favorite was Lorne the happy green singing demon.

Terrible loss. My daughter and I was watching the final 2 episodes of Angel last night, 03 May 2009, when she asked me to go and Google to see what Andy is doing these days.
My surprise turned to shock and then horror. We sat there ice cold in disbelief. The same feeling we had when my wife passed away 2 years ago, very, very sad to hear Andy is no longer with us.
We are from Johannesburg South Africa and had been watching the Angel and Buffy series from the word go. Our favorite caracter was Lorne, the demon with the beautiful voice and good nature. We even bought the series and have been watching for 10 years.
So sorry and our hearts go out to David and his wife Lori Hallet.

I don't know what to say, except to first express my deepest and most sincere condolences to Andy's family and friends, particularly his parents. I never had the privilege of meeting Andy, but Lorne was always my favourite character on ANGEL, and through hearing stories of Andy's warmth and generosity, and his wonderful sesne of humour, I feel as if I have lost a friend...
Thank you for the memories Andy, and for being the beautiful and unique person you were. and of course, for that amazing voice. I'll never forget...

April 24, 2009

My wife and I knew Andy Hallett only through his role on ANGEL, like most people. We both admired his music, his acting, and the warmth and sense of fun he could project even through green face paint, prosthetics, and a small TV screen.

I met him at a science fiction convention some years back. Robin was too ill to attend, so I'd brought a copy of the "Live Fast, Die Never" CD, featuring music from the show. I hoped to have him autograph it for her--that was one of the few goals I had for the day.

At length I found his table, explained the situation, and asked how much he'd charge to autograph the album for my wife. (At this point in history, the convention management was REQUIRING celebrities to charge for their autographs. But I'm not here to talk about how conventions are managed these days...)

He not only refused to give me a price--he refused to take any money at all. He signed the CD cover, then autographed a photo as well (charging for neither the photo nor the inscription--though he was supposed to charge for both). The inscription on the photo read:
=====
Robin,

I missed you this year in Atlanta, darling! Hope to see you real soon.

All the best,

ANDY HALLETT
=====
Robin never got a chance to meet him, but that photo and that CD are two of her most treasured possessions now. They remind her of a man she admired--not just as a talented musician and actor, but as a man with a good heart and real class.

Please accept our condolences.

I am sad. When I read this a couple weeks ago I couldn't believe it. He was such a wonderful person and such a talent on Angel. I made a webforum I role play on and a character I have called Baser has been created in the image of Lorne the character he played on Angel. Andy was turly a favorite of mine and I will not forget the pics and notes he put on them for me. "Don't be afraid to go to a karaoke bar and sing if it is a true love for you. Even if you have to go alone." He truly will be missed.

I am so sorry to everyone, especially Andy's parents, for this loss. Andy Hallett was not only extraordinarily talented, but also extraordinarily kind, and he would always talk about how wonderful and talented *other* people were: he showed off photos of the murals his mother painted, cited advice his father gave him, talked lovingly (and hilariously) about adventures with his friends. He was a unique and wonderful human being and I believe that pretty much everyone who knew him feels a tremendous sadness at what is gone and a tremendous sense of love for all that Andy was. Peace be with us all.
