Basil LaFollette Obituary

Born November 19, 1929 and passed away January 30, 2012 at his home in Richardson. He was born in McKinney, the son of Austin and Ella Mae LaFollette and graduated McKinney High School before joining the Navy, which he served in the Pacific Theater.

Upon his discharge from the Navy, he returned to McKinney to work for Sherwin-Williams and married Barbara Moore on June 1, 1951. After a brief time working in the refineries in Port Arthur, Basil and Bobby returned to North Texas as he would start his career with the Dallas Police Department.

Beginning in 1954, he served in various roles and became known as "Duck" LaFollette and was instrumental in starting the "first offender program" with the Dallas Independent School District. He was a founding member of the Dallas Police Officers Association in 1959 and received the officer of the year award in 1964. He retired as a Sergeant in 1980. He traveled the U.S. by motorcycle with other retired officers and troopers. Basil served as a deacon of the Creekside Baptist Church and was a member of the Christian Motorcycle Association, Grayson County Sheriff's Posse under Sheriff Woody Blanton, and the Van Alstyne Saddle Club.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Barbara Moore LaFollette, daughter Julie LaFollette, brother Ralph LaFollett, nieces Chris Dopson, Ann Embry, Jan Ernst, Cindy Dowis, nephews Charles LaFollett, and Duane LaFollett

The Memorial Service will be 3 p.m. Monday, February 6 at the Creekside Baptist Church, 1105 N. Waterview Richardson.

Julie: I love you so much and am proud to be your friend. You are the woman you are because of the way your mom and wonderful dad raised you. You are grieving right now and I feel your pain after losing my best friend (my mom) a short time ago, but your dad is in a better place and is so proud of the person you have become. Lynn and I love you very much and have no words that will make you feel better, but know we are always here for you. Love you

Julie and Bobbie: I love you very much and feel priviliged to have known Basil. He was very special. But I know how much he suffered and how hard he fought to stay here. He is at rest now. May you find peace as well. Please know that I will always be here if you need a shoulder to lean on.

Dear Bobbie and Julie,
I could fill an entire notebook with fond memories of Basil, from my first chew of tobacco while loading hay at the farm, to riding in the Grand Entry at the Mesquite Rodeo, and he even sold my dad my first vehicle - that great '64 Chevy pick up. He taught me so much about life, horses and love. He was an amazing person. I'm so glad we reconnected via email the last few years, and it was as if we'd always stayed in touch. My thoughts and prayers are with both of you.

Much, much love,
Melanee (Beard) Yielding

The highest honor a law enforcement officer can receive at his passing is the simple statement, "he was a good, hardworking and honest cop" and Sarge was certainly all of these.

I pray his family and friends can find peace and comfort during this time of sadness and grief in the blessings of our Lord.

Dear Bobbie and Julie, Basil was not only a father, and a husband, but he was a friend to many. I am proud to say he was my friend. He told me when I was young and trying so hard to fit in to just be myself. Because of Basil, I still wear Cowboy Boots and Jeans, and I am proud . I love you both and ask that God gives you comfort during this difficult time. Page Billings Henry

Dear Bobbie and Julie,

We all know that Basil is in a better place and that GOD never gives us more than we can handle. He taught me about horses, motorcycles, how to avoid getting arrested and that 3 x 7 = 21. He will always be with us as our guardian angel and we will get through this together.

All my love,
