Bert Jansch Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 5, 2011.
LONDON (AP) - A representative of Bert Jansch says the legendary folk guitarist has died in London after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 67.

Spokesman Mick Houghton said Wednesday that Jansch died early Wednesday morning at the Marie Curie Hospice in north London.

He says Jansch had been hospitalized for nearly seven weeks. He was diagnosed with cancer more than two years ago.

Jansch was a founding member of the British folk group Pentangle and had inspired a generation of rock and folk guitarists with his acoustic mastery. He enjoyed a long solo career and also performed in early August with the recently reformed Pentangle.

Houghton says his final solo performances were opening for Canadian rocker Neil Young earlier this year.

Bert's music has touched my soul for 45 years and I'm the poorer for his passing. His songs and guitar reflected so much of my feeling and gave it expression. Without ever having met him, he enriched my life immeasurably. Bert may be gone but his wonderful music lives on.

I play the guitar every day thanks to Bert. It is a vital part of my life and wouldn't be so without Bert's inspiration. Thank-you for enriching my life.

After buying Bert's album in the late sixties I have bought all his recordings and followed his music ever since. I feel so privileged to have seen him so many times on the folk scene and remember too well Les Cousins et al. That unique beautiful voice. What a legacy he has left and will never never be forgotten. A truly sad time for us all.

Bert was a truly unique and inspirational guitarist and writer .I would like to leave the following words from a song called 'No more My Lord' that Pentangle performed brilliantly..."Jesus,He is the one, He's the one I'm looking for...and I'll never turn back no more"God Bless.

Yep, i was the young fan that cheekily grabbed your tracklist off the stage, subsequently got ushered into your dressing room by your PA, and furthermore got the tracklist signed!.. however, if i didn't then i would never have had the opportunity to shake your hand and tell you how awesome you truly are...R.I.P Bert.

Legendary Folk Guitarist

Welcome Home
written by L J Coon

Welcome home my friend, from so much suffering
Welcome home my friend, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend welcome home

Talk of love one’s lost, so many years ago
And how you hurt inside, till no more tears would flow
Let the healing start, you can't look back no more
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

Could I somehow sooth, your pain that lives within
If you just let go, the healing will begin
Holding on so tight, letting go is half the test
Its ok my friend welcome home

Welcome home, from so much suffering
Welcome home, step out of the pain
It’s ok to cry, we've all seen tears before
Its ok my friend, welcome home

It’s ok my friend…the pain won't hurt, no more ...

My guitar teacher introduced me to Berts music way back in 1980 when l was 14. Many years later l bumped into Bert at Victoria station on his way home from a gig. We shared a train journey into Kent and he was as warm and confiding in person as his music is.
He was a very lovely man whose music will continue to inspire for generations.
It is extremely sad to think we shall never see him again but we can continue to hear him for the rest of our lives and that is a great blessing for us all.
Goodnight Bert and thankyou x

RIP Bert Jansch. I first heard him back in '67 thanks to Donovan, and always loved Pentangle. He was so very talented. The angels are now enjoying his riffs.

I was a big fan of Bert and Pentangle in the 60s, and learned open tuning guitar playing from Rosemary Lane in the 70s. I only had the pleasure of seeing him perform live once, at McCabes in Santa Monica, California. A great guitar player and song writer,he will be mourned by guitar players all over the world.

A very sad day with the passing of great man, musician and influential artist. In the 60s he gave voice to young hearts breaking free from restrictive forms of music. He expressed, with passion, the desire of so many of us to be free and follow a different more liberated way of working out what life was about. When I was 16 my finger tips burnt trying to practise Angie and Needle of Death. I hadn't realised at the time that so many people were also experiencing this pain - and we're all feeling a different pain now. Farewell Bert.

To the Jansch family and all who loved Bert my deepest condolences. I pray that your sorrow and pain eases during this stressful time, 2 Thessalonians 2:16,17 "Moreover, may our Lord Jesus Christ himself and God our Father, who loved us and gave everlasting comfort and good hope by means of undeserved kindness, comfort your hearts and make you firm in every good deed and word."
Bert will be remembered...

A sad day for Pentangle fans worldwide. Thanks for the music, which will live on in all our hearts.

Found out when I got home an hour ago.
Have been in tears since.

Along with John, and Pentangle, he is my greatest musical influence.

As a Glasgow lad, I can truly say that we have lost our greatest ever musician.

God bless you Bert, may your music and memory live on beyond these words.

A one-off was Bert. We hitched down to London many a weekend to Les Cousins just to see Bert. He was a big inspiration to so many of us. Glad to have shared some of my life with his music. He brought together personal lyrics with great guitar playing. He never seemed to court fame but just went on his creative path.
