Beverly Garland Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Dec. 7, 2008.
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Beverly Garland, the B-movie actress who starred in 1950s cult hits like "Swamp Women" and "Not of This Earth" and who went on to play Fred MacMurray's TV wife on "My Three Sons," has died. She was 82.

Garland died Friday at her Hollywood Hills home after a lengthy illness, her son-in-law Packy Smith told the Los Angeles Times.

Garland made her film debut in the 1950 noir classic "D.O.A.," launching a 50-year career that included 40 movies and dozens of television shows.

She gained cult status for playing gutsy women in low-budget exploitation films such as "The Alligator People" and a number of Roger Corman movies including "Gunslinger," "It Conquered the World" and "Naked Paradise."

"I never considered myself very much of a passive kind of actress," she said in a 1985 interview with Fangoria magazine. "I was never very comfortable in love scenes, never comfortable playing a sweet, lovable lady."

Garland showed her comedic chops as Bing Crosby's wife in the short-lived sitcom "The Bing Crosby Show" in the mid-'60s.

She went on to be cast in "My Three Sons" as the second wife of MacMurray's widower Steve Douglas during the last three seasons of the popular series that aired from 1960 to 1972.

Her television credits also include "Remington Steele," ''Scarecrow and Mrs. King," ''Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," ''Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman" and "7th Heaven."

Garland was born Beverly Fessenden in Santa Cruz, Calif., in 1926, and grew up in Glendale. She became Beverly Garland when she married actor Richard Garland. They were divorced in 1953 after less than four years of marriage.

In 1960, she married real estate developer Fillmore Crank, and the couple built a mission-style hotel in North Hollywood, now called Beverly Garland's Holiday Inn. Garland, whose husband died in 1999, remained involved in running the North Hollywood hotel.

She was the honorary mayor of North Hollywood and served on the boards of the California Tourism Corp. and the Greater Los Angeles Visitors and Convention Bureau.

Just finished watching the episode 'Smoke Screen' an episode from the TV series 'The Fugitive' where she played a nurse who was part of a fire fighting support team. I most remember her as most others do from her days on 'My Three Sons' playing the role of Mrs. Steven Douglas. A very pretty lady and talented actress.

I always loved Beverly as an actress, but my favorite recollection of her was as a regular on Mike Stokey's "Stump the Stars". She used to get so intense when playing the charades game, that she would usually kick off her stillettoes, and play in her stocking feet. At the end of the show, Ross Martin would play keep away with her heels.

I just found out about ms. garland's death yesterday, and I am so saddened by it. I just loved her. I think her "realness" came through her acting, and she was just someone I always wanted to meet, and now will not get the change. She just exuded confidence and happiness. You could always see that. Another classy, wonderful, old-time actress that has left us.

I worked at her hotel for 7 years and she was very involved in how it ran. She was very kind to everyone there. When I was in PBX I answered the phone "thank you for calling Beverly Garands Holiday Inn at Universal Studios, how may I direct your call?"...she said" I can't remember, but that was good, do you say that every time?" I told her yes and she said keep up the good work! That is how she was...funny. I hope that is how she would want to be remembered because anyone that could make work funny is my hero. We loved you Beverly!

To the friends and family of Beverly and Fillmore:

Beverly was just the greatest!

As the spokesperson for the National Tour Association, Beverly literally moved thousands to enjoy their lives on escorted tours and improve their health, too.

Her humor and smile were unmatched. Having had the pleasure to serve with her on a couple of small committees, each meeting was a life defining moment from all the laughter that resulted.

Both she and Fillmore will be missed and held in our hearts forever.

May her memory be a blessing to all. May she and Fillmore enjoy their eternal rest in peace together again.

Beverly stood out as a role model not only in her industry as an actress, but in the tourism industry as our representative. Her integrity and honesty remained constant. Her smile and laughter remains in our hearts. Traveling with Beverly was a hoot and I will cherish the time she spent with me in Montana. All the pictures reflect her giving to others which was her trademark. Our lives are blessed by Beverly and may we all put a little bit of Beverly in our lives as we deal with life's challenges. As you know, Beverly Garland served as the spokesperson for the National Tour Association from 1980 into the early '90s -- lending her celebrity to promote the joy of traveling. We, at NTA and throughout the tour and travel industry, owe her a debt of gratitude for the years of dedicated service she 'gave back.' She was a gifted actress and a wise business woman -- and extremely fun to travel with. We wanted you to know how important she was in all walks of her life -- we will miss her dearly.
