Bill Young Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 18, 2013.
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — Rep. Bill Young of Florida, the senior Republican in the U.S. House and a defense hawk who was influential on military spending during his 43 years in Washington, died Friday. He was 82.

His chief of staff, Harry Glenn, said in an email that Young died at 6:50 p.m. at Walter Reed Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where he had been for nearly two weeks with back problems that stemmed from a 1970 small plane crash.

Glenn's email included a statement from Young's family, saying the family was with Young when he died. It continued, "The cause of death was complications related to a chronic injury. Information on services will be forthcoming."

On Oct. 9, from his hospital bed, Young announced that he would not seek another term in 2014.

As one of the strongest defense supporters in Congress, Young made headlines in 2012 when he said the United States should withdraw its forces from Afghanistan. Young told The Associated Press at the time that "we're killing kids who don't need to die," and reflected the growing weariness with a conflict that had dragged on for more than a decade.

Young, who had been involved in Florida politics since 1957, was considered the elder statesman of Florida's Republican Party and in the U.S. House of Representatives. He died during his 22nd term in Congress.

In recent years, Young became increasingly frail and relied on a wheelchair. He was quoted by The Tampa Tribune recently as saying that his decision to retire was based on both his health and a desire to spend more time with his family.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, Young received a call Wednesday from former President George W. Bush, who thanked Young for his support of the military.

In a written statement, Florida Senate President Don Gaetz said, "For more than 50 years, Congressman Young dedicated his life to serving the people of Florida in Tallahassee and in our nation's capital ... As a member of the United States House of Representatives, Congressman Young will long be remembered for his dedication to our nation's active duty military and our veterans.

Florida Democratic Party Chair Allison Tant said in a statement that Young "was a dedicated public servant and a true gentleman." For more than 40 years, she said, "Young's dedication to Florida and consistent civility has set the standard for all of Florida public servants."

Charles William Young was born in Harmarville, Pa., and later moved to Indian Shores, Fla., a small Gulf Coast community in Pinellas County.

He served in the Army National Guard from 1948 to 1957, then became an aide to U.S. Rep. William Cramer from 1957 to 1960. From 1961 to 1971, he served in the Florida Senate.

He was first elected to the U.S. House in 1970. Young and his wife, Beverly, had three children.

The congressman was a longtime member of the House Appropriations Committee, where he focused on military spending. He and his wife frequently visited ailing service members at hospitals in the Washington area.

Young brought hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks back to the Tampa Bay area, and built up a defense contracting industry in the region, creating jobs and stirring the economy.

Young's district, which encompasses almost all of densely populated Pinellas County, was already expected to be up for grabs in the 2014. His death makes it likely that Democrats will pour additional resources into the race. A special election will be held to finish his term.

According to the Florida Secretary of State's office, the district is composed of 37.7 percent Republicans, 35.2 percent Democrats, 23.2 percent independents. The rest are registered with other parties.

In 2012, President Barack Obama carried the district 52-46 percent in the presidential race, while Young beat Democratic challenger Jessica Ehrlich 58-42 percent

Ehrlich has already declared her candidacy for 2014 and had raised nearly $154,000 as of July. Young's wife has told local media that she would run for the seat if Ehrlich's name is on the ballot.

Alex Sink, a prominent Democrat who ran in 2010 for governor against Rick Scott, has also expressed interest in Young's seat.

Thank you for speaking out against war, looking out for Social Security, and veterans' need for care. My mother's side of my family enjoys/enjoyed St. Petersburg. May your spirit live on. Feel free to ask God, on my behalf, that the people on earth could possibly benefit from a new/better plan than He originally came up with. In other words, send reinforcements !!! :) ♡♥♡

Bill Young was a name I learned early in 1982 when I was assigned to MacDill AFB. His name was always in a positive light that I have said ofter "... was always beyond the call of duty." Bill, again thank you for your service.

To the family of Congressman Bill Young;

Although we didn't know Congressman and Bev personally, they played a very important part in our lives and the lives of our son and his family. I know without a doubt that my son would not be alive today if they had not intervened. They cared about what was happening with him when he got back from Iraq. They made it possible for him to be put into the Wounded Warriors program so that he could get the right help he needed.

Congressman Young was a very special man and will be truly missed by the thousands of people he and Bev helped. Thank you so much Bill and Bev for your loving and caring spirit. May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow.

To Beverly and family:

Words cannot express the sincere appreciation and admiration of your loved one.

We are but one family of thousands that were personally touched by his gracious assistance, and yours, Bev, when we were concerned about our deployed soldier overseas. You both were there for us.

Prior to this, I did not miss voting for the Congressman every year he was up for election/re-election. And, there are thousands like myself. How could we not? Every year he did so much to bring resources and assistance to our county. He was approachable, caring, and one of the most dedicated public servants to his public every to have served in Congress.

Sincere condolences to the Young family. We will miss your loved one. Thank you for sharing him with Florida, with the Nation. He was truly a good man, respected and appreciated and he lives on in the hearts of everyone he touched.

God Bless you all.

Dear Young Family,

It is with a sad heart that I must send this letter.

I wish to provide my sincerest condolences on the passing of your husband & father, Congressman C. W. Bill Young.

I would like to take this time to again thank Congressman Young for all his work and support in establishing the Bay Pines VA wildlife refuge and for all the years of giving and great accomplishments here in Florida and also in Washington D.C.

I had requested his assistance with creating this refuge and he honored me by sending me a letter regarding this and also by making this wonderful project come to reality. On April 4, 1982 the Bay Pines VA wildlife refuge was created which has allowed many veterans and visitors to the adjacent park the opportunity to view the wildlife.

In addition, now Congressman Young will always be at rest at Bay Pines and in spirit will protect the VA's wildlife setting.

The State of Florida, the United States Government and the world overall has lost an honorable, hardworking and wonderful person who will be missed deeply by all.

God Bless you and your family,
Tony Lozon E.C Ret.

He did a lot for Pinellas County, Florida and helped appropriate government funding for many projects - improving roads and bridges, Tampa Bay Water Reservoir, US Marine and Geological Bldg in downtown St. Pete named after him, brought SRI to downtown St. Pete, funded the Bay Pines Veterans Hospital complex and multiple buildings, visited veterans in the hospital, etc. Though we differ greatly in other issues and believes, I acknowledge and respect him for the good things he did do for his constituents and community. My condolences to his family.
